Why does the plow angle lever hit my brake pedal?

Recommended Posts

ebinmaine

I don't have pictures yet but I can get some later. I know that will be helpful but I forgot to take them last night.

So here's what I know.

When I bought my c-160 last year it came with a plow. It was delivered to my house and the plow was not mounted on it. I never saw this particular plow on that particular tractor.

The plow I have is 42 inches wide and has a full frame as most of them do.

The angle lever has the Z shape to it, NOT a straight stick of metal, and also bends slightly back towards the operator.

When I am pulling the angle lever towards me to change the angle of the plow it contacts the brake lever.

Any thoughts?

Might have to put a spacer on the pedal to bring it out a little?

Trina and I looked at that last night. I was wondering if that was the case.

flip the angle lever around.

depending if you had 8-speed vs Auto on some models had the brake on the right or left side of the tractor?

I think the generic snow blade operating manual shows this.

I didn't  look at the manual yet but I did try flipping the lever. That made it worse.

with the Z shaped Bend in the lever it moved it further away from the hood so it contacted the brake pedal even more.

I had to move mine out with a 2" spacer to get it to clear the motion foot pedal on my 312 hydro.

Any chance I can get a picture of that when you get a free minute?

Eric:

My plow and handle were used for years on my 1975 Wheel Horse B-80 tractor.

The 1995 Wheel Horse  314-8  I recently bought now has this plow on it.

I was worried about the plow handle clearing the footrest and engine muffler .    I first placed it on backwards which the first two photos show in clear detail.

I turned handle around and it clears the footrest and rides up to the back of the brake pedal but works and pivots the plow in all five holes on my  plow ( i chnaged out the pivot hole piece from a three piece to a five piece part used on the later snowplow/dozer blades).

@Lane Ranger

Thank you for the pics!

Mine is definitely mounted backwards from that and maybe my rod is bent? I don't know. But it clearly interferes with my brake pedal.

I'll try to snap some pictures later this evening.....

Here is mine with spacer to clear the motion control lever attached to the foot pedal.

Here's a couple pics of what I have going on but the angle is not great because there isn't much room beside the tractor.

Here's one with a brake off

here's where you can see my hand holding the brake pedal in the on position and it contacts the angle lever

and here's one to show the lever as a whole. I don't know if you can really get the angle out of this picture or not.

@ebinmaine I have made a couple of "homemade" handles and have had to heat/bend several to actually work on the machine I was using at the time. More of a "custom" lever if you will!

Another possibility is to lengthen the round rod that goes from the lever to the plow....This will make the top of the lever move forward....as long as you can still reach it!

Good luck and keep us posted, as we like to know what worked and what didn't!

Eric you need a brake peddle off a C-Series. My 77 C-120 the peddle angles out away from the tractor in stead of straight up.

I have two snow blades and the angle lever is different on both.  One is almost straight and the other has a Z bend in it.  The Z bend came off my Dad's 161 with the 42' blade.  The straight lever came with my 54".  When I put the 54" on the 161 I had to switch the levers so the Z bend stayed with the 161.  I put the straight lever on the 42" that I now run on the 606.  I think I may have had to manipulate the straight lever in the vise a bit so it would fit the 606 but I can't remember for sure.  I may have some pics somewhere if that would help.

Eric, here's the one I bought 20 years ago when I first got a used blade without the lever and my dealer ordered this, when I finally got the 520 extension kit I had to modify it so it wouldn't hit the muffler, Jeff.

That might be the idea right there that works the best.

I have Gorilla arms so there's no issue with being able to reach forward far enough to grab it.:D

I'd like to maybe try to cut this one somewhere and add something into it to lengthen it... How might one do that?

Reminds me of Gumball Rally... To paraphrase some memorable lines: The first rule of Italian Tractor Racing is "Whatsa behind you isa no madder..." The second, and far more applicable rule to this situation is "we don't need no stinking brakes..." Perhaps removal of the offending brake pedal would kill two birds with one stone - no more conflict with the handle and automatic enrollment in the little known but highly competitive world of Maine's Italian Tractor racing circuit... :ychain:

But more on topic - I would add length to the rod so the handle is straight up / down...should work...

I lowered the amount that the blade would lift.

That seemed to help. But I also reformed the angle lever too.

Didn't the B-80 have a shorter frame than the C's ? That might be the problem...:confusion-confused:

A HUGE thank you to Tony @Docwheelhorse for settin' me up here.

The generosity of some of our members never ceases to amaze me.

This here is another 1974 C160, but with the rare Tecumseh HH/OH160 OHV engine. Made one year only.

It's rough. Very much in need of a full disassembly and restoration.

When it came here it was missing one tie rod and the other was broken off one end.
Today I popped used tie rods on and Trina used her 867 to drag it from the drive to the shed.

      The engine wouldn't move.
Tin was near chock full of skeletal mouseseses and their house.
Cleaned that out and the engine spins freely now.

      So progress has been made.

It'll be a good long while before we get to this one but I just couldn't turn it down considering the rarity.

      Hello,

I am hoping someone can help my. I recently acquired a c160 for the engine for another tractor. So I did a motor swap and wanted to see what the hydro was like. I put a plow on it C-160 (which now has a 12hp engine on it). I did a quick test run and everything was good. I drained the fluid and change the filter (Napa 1410 filter and sae 30 transmission fluid as it stated to only use this fluid on the tractor.) everything was working great after the fluid change. I plowed two driveways and the sidewalks near my house... all the sudden the tractor would not go forwards or in reverse. I tried to pick the plow up and nothing... I checked my drive belt it was turning like it should. I started to push the tractor and the rear was engaged so it would not move. Of course I was 400’ from my driveway and the plow was down which made it fun. I put the tractor in forward and started to push it and the thing took off. So I hopped on and took it to the front of the garage. I put it in revers and it cut out again so I pushed it in the garage. Today I went out to check the tow valve. I took it out and cleaned the threads up put it back in and it did not change anything. According to the dipstick I have the proper amount of fluid in it. I did have a drip that I fixed on the cylinder still nothing... does anyone out there have any tips to help me out? I’ve never had a transmission like this only manual transmissions. The model of this transmission is the sundstrand 90-1140.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Brian

Hi folks, me and the gal pal were on our way to the wheelhorse motherland ( southbend), to shop for some wedding rings.  So we go down little country road see a barn sale, turned around cause I spy a wheelhorse.  I ask how much , he said 400$, but someone was suppose to be picking it up.  Turns out it came with a sickle bar too. My ears kinda perked up then , cause my dad wants on for his 702.  They call the other fella,  he passed on it, I offered 300$, we settled at 350$. Tractor runs pretty good,  lil smoke when ya goose it, but runs and cuts pretty good.  I'm hoping the sickle bar will fit my dad's 702, it's a 50 inch bar.  Anywho, here's some pics a serial numbers if anyone has some additional info, or point me in the right direction,  would be appreciated,  thanks!!!

I have at least 7 hubs on different tractors that I would like to add a second set screw to.

I have an older but good quality floor model drill press.
      I have the tap set.
I don't recall ever using the tap set to do anything other than clean out threads. Not make my own thread set.

Can anybody give any particular advice?
