Engine Swap on a 212 horse

Recommended Posts

Tractorhead

Because of my troubles (oil spill) with the old Onan engine i ordered at Onanengines.com a Gasket kit.

It arrives quickly ( thanks therefore) and i prepare for Oilchange.

To Change the Oil, i fired up the Engine, but after few seconds a loud ploink sound occurs, and the Engine Stalls.

When i fired the Engine again, nothing happen just a tuc tuc tuc - and a lot of oil and a bit of gasoline run's out over the Exhaust.

A closer investigation show's, that the Cylinder Head and even the Cylinder self has a rip of about 1,5 cm over both parts.

What was the Reason for? It's hard to say, maybe while it was in a burning Barn, maybe about fire distinguisher - who knows.

Take a long story short, i decided to swap the Engine.

First i ordered a brandnew Engine - Loncin Brand .

Today it arrives in qualified enclosure and ready for swap.

Additional because i build my FEL quickly, i just try firstly with a Power Steering pump.

So far the System can work, (tested by Makita) 😎 but i missed the direction check ahead.

So i could not use it without strong workarround.

Next Step was to order a right directed Hydraulic pump and adapted it quickly to the Drive pulley of the Gear.

My Test results surprises me, with a complete released front Axle, i am able to lift about 700 Kilos,

what i stopped urgently, because the little Tractor begins to lift its back.

A damn dangerous situation at all, but now i know

- there is more than enough Power from the Hydraulics itself.👍

I just wanna Lift about 100-150 Kilos no more. So i reduced the Hydraulic pressure on the Valve.

The only issue i have further, is that i coupled the hydraulic pump direct to the Drive pulley.

That means - stay on clutch, no Hydraulics at all, not very senseful.

To solve this issue, i plan to move the Pump forward ahead of the Seat and mount mount under the Plate a collar bearing.

On this Collar bearing i planing a double pulley, where one comeing directly from Engine and the other working as usual with the Original

Belt clutch. So i hope all functions can be implemented with a senseful using.

I worked now a lot ahead, about measurement and graphical Engineering to solve that.

Hope that i can next weekend in my Buddy's Workshop, to finalize the Swap.

This WE is impossible...

Stay tuned

Stefan

You will definitely need weight on the back to use the loader. Keep up the good work and the pictures comming.

@roadapples yes, youre right, but i want not take the Load on the Axle, therefore i planning also wheelweights.

thinkin on old Brakedrums and fill with concrete.

But first the implementation must be made, and brakedrums has to be found, they are usable.

i got an idea, but must see if it fit's - next time at the scapyard.

i think tuc tuc tuc shall be the new name (maybe stolen at put put) 😂

Not sure if this can be proven, but I think the English to German translation of Putt Putt is Tuc Tuc!  :handgestures-thumbupright: :orcs-cheers: :handgestures-thumbupright:

Hmmm - not really TucTuc was used in India therefore but -

tuc tuc tuc  was that sound i have in ear, if i remeber the last try of fire up the Engine

so tuc tuc tuc make sense... 😂 :orcs-cheers:

Thanks for compliments,

it was firstly just a proof of concept, but while it's working much better then i ever expected, i will improove it.

I'm really proud of my Design!

Iam also proud that my first WIG Welding is that stable.

To be honest, most of Welding did a collegue, but he guides me in WIG Welding and i did 2 of the most loaded parts.

The first stability and Lift tests and also the heavy pull, i did with different shorter front Arms,

but the both levers are the same as doing the Lift tests. They bend a bit what i expected, but not as much as i fear.

Even if i lifted the Back of my own Car on the Trailerhook with released front axle on the tractor, it bend's a bit but gets nearly back to normal. 1mm difference was measured and this can be also a measurement failure.

All together it's extremly leight weight ( the complete FEL including shovel and all cylinders) weights actually less than 27 Kilos.

and lift's with me in the seat 160 Kilo on the backside on the Shovel fixed by Belts without any added weight.

Try it with a rock -  think i can say it was " Rock Solid" 😂

It only become a bit instable if i move the weight (more as 100 Kilos) to much sideway's.

But that's ok, because i know about maybe solve this issue later on.😎

I just can give you a simple Advice, start a project and learn with it and never give up to solve it.

Here in this Forum are such a mass of knowleged Guy's, i' sure include mine everybody will help you as much as they can.

If neccessary, ask for help or guidance, it's never too late to learn something.

i'm over 50, so my skills are not at beginning present.

I started when i was a young guy with simple projects and improve my knowledge.

do a lot of try's - somtimes they miss, somtimes they stay, you can just learn about.

but don't start a too large project, take it in simple steps - one by one.

i'll be sure, you will made it!

Go on!

Firstly we got visit from my Kids with the grandsons.

Raphy, the youngest has a new fervor - every second sentence was "Grandpa Tractor - i wanna take a sit !" - hehehe..

Later we go to our neighbor and "visit" his huge Tractor.

" Oh, that fears me, wanna sit to your's " thanked by a big grin😎

After we are back in House he told his mom, "Grandpa has a nice red Tractor and i can take a sit and next time we drive with.

He do this with a proud face, i never will forget!

So it's now more Urgent to repair my Horse...

After they leaving today i reworked the Rear lights, to become more visible and also to get a mounting point for a small Housing.

later i completed and connected the front lightning and even a additional Lightbar on the FEL.

added also a pic from the new Engine.

Doing some planing ahead...

... Time is gona running

Buy it as an 12,5 HP Engine, but in the Manual it should be 16 HP..😎

That means 3,5 HP diff

but the Onan has 385cc the loncing has 452cc.

maybe more torque in lower rpm!

i love slowMotion Engines with high torque, therefore a diesel engine will be better,

but i like gasoline Engines most.

Doing some more measurements ahead for implementing the Hydraulic pump because of engine swap.

Wanna doing all at once, but as you all know, mostly Evil is in a detail...👹

I fighting with each 1/10 mm of space between pedalshaft, engineshaft and rest of the space i have available.

it seems to be tricky, because i change several issues together.

Also additional the Gear Ratio from engine to Hy-pump and Hy-pump to Gear will be caused.

The calculated Gearratios shall be a good choice for usability.

That means an additional Pulley (55mm) over the Original pulley (85mm)

handed to a doublepulley, wich is connected to pump shaft.

the engine side got 85mm the Gear side got 95mm,

Got measured a maximum of 4mm free space between clutch and the pulley's themselves not much and a max of 0,5 mm sideway's for cut or mounting mistakes, when i like to use the pulley's as they are calculated.

Then hopefully the 4 mm releasing range is enough, that the beld releases completley and the clutch works as expected.

a Beltguide on the Hy-pulley's is planned but not in the drawing, the test if everything works

if yes, i won this Challenge also, if not - don't wanna think about, i solve it...😇😎

So far, the Other needed pieces of material is ordered and the double pulley must maybe a selfmade part, we will see.

there are 2 Versions, how the Hydro-Pump how it can be implemented for continouse working.

actually i preferr this version 2 Because of possibillity of easy changing Gear Ratio.

The Collar Bearing is here yippyayeh -  hehehe,

i also made yesterday a blank for a pulley to measure ahead, that make it more easy to measure correct.

The first measurements i made ahead and my drawings are exact so far,  it fits really tightly.

I don't have much space for the Pullet so my fear about it was not unfounded.

i also ordered yesterday few different pulley's, so hopefully i can use one without lot of reworking,

if not - i have to make it at my minilathe.

And also a pic of the clutch, i think about to use....

image.jpeg

image.jpeg

my biggest Enemy was the Pedal shaft, it reduces my space dramatically.

maybe i must cut it in two halves, to get more space.

then should a double belt be the easier way to go.

one Belt for hydraulics, one Belt for driving gear.

i don't preferr this way, but actually it seems the easiest to solve this issue.

image.jpeg

image.jpeg

Additional i hesitate because of the stability, i know 2 Belts in same direction on the Engine shaft is a wrong Engineering, but i doubt i have other chance.

Wait for the Pulley's, then we will see what's gona happen.

@pullstart same up to you... hehehe, you are not allone 👁 I watch you Work at mrs. Pullstart!

soooo - some pulley's arrived today.

let's do a bit measuring - damn, it' so early dark outside

image.jpeg

Here is the pulley close to it's final place. A bit move to the side will work better...

and as far as it looked together, the solution i prefer seems to be possibly

- tightly sure but possible. So far my measuring ahead also seems to be fine.

Yeeeeeehaaaaa!

Yes, this are the Pictures, i like to see.

image.jpeg

In this pic you will see how closely everything is with the Pedalshaft. But while i choosed a straight shaft for the Collar bearing, so i able to move the pulley's a bit up or down to trim the whole beltdrive in phase up or down as required, that was the Plan and it seems it works.

Just have to dealing with the Belt sizes and lenght.

Maybe a little stronger Belt would also be fine but that is secondary.

Everything seems, that i must made a fitting doublepulley myself, but my minilathe is to small for.

thinking about how to dealing with...

cannot cuck the pulleysize i needed.

looks it works so far, so i reordered more in different dimensions.

still waiting for delivery....

Another Action is taken on Tuc Tuc...

Thankfully i can today in my Buddy's Workshop.

Let's starting an funny Saturday-

image.jpeg

Firstly remove the Hood and disassemble all cables and wires, all pipes and hoses and remove the Engine.

image.jpeg

While try to remove the Clutch i use a smaller Puller, because i want not that much force to keep the PTO. Then i hear a loud crack - ouch -

not a nice Sound - the puller breaks and nothing more happens.

I carefully try all options, including warming and cheating to remove the Clutch .. Again same.

it maybe want's still stay's with the Engine.

after about 3 hours of carefully try, i decided it just helps raw violence.

i used a bigger Puller - not good, the whole PTO rips in half.. Aaaaaaarrrrgghhhh what a mess.

i like to keep it - *g*

the result you can see in the Pic..

image.jpeg

To cool down, i cleaned the Platform a bit and try, if the new Engine fits - yes, it fits!

The only issue was, that the Screw on Mainshaft was a 7/16 - UNC 20, an dimension

every German had a mass of... Oooooooooh noooooo.

ok, odering screws...

image.jpeg

Then i checked again, if my first measuring was right.

yepp, fix grab the Drill and drill a hole to see, where i am.

hey, looks fine - my buddy give me an special drillbit for steel.

so i drilled my hole and try if the Pump will fit on its place.

Yes, another Success for the Day..

Dinner - oh yes, good idea, stay hungry......

image.jpeg

After Dinner, i finished the Engine Swap as far as i can.

Damn, everything looks good but nothing can be finally fixed, because of lack material - i hate this...

the hood on the Backseat, firstly i have to think about, what i will do with the Exhaust.

Cut or noncut- that is the question...

it's bigger than i expected, but to get Streetlegal i must keep it, because of Euro II norm.

if i keep it as it is, i got really good chances for get it

Think i will do first Testride without Hood.

i don't wanna do this, but it seems, i have to cut the Hood to fit the Exhaust.

also the Pump is good placed, so i can use a lager 2. pulley to change the transmission as needed.

happy for the things are done today, dissapointed to the Things they fail.

man man man, they piced a pto here for about 250 bucks - will do a research for a cheaper one...

today where i am out, the new Battery arrives so tomorrow i can firstly start the engine maybe.

oil is filled up and Hydraulicparts are also still waiting for...

i hate it to wait ..

Tuc - Tuc - Tuc -

to hear this sound again,i do today just a little Steps working ahead.

Mounting an external Oilfilter for the Hydraulics, i dumped the complete Oilreservoir while ripped a pipehose...

so when i have to rework it, here is the best time for...

ordered 2 Belts one from Engine to Pump another from Pump to Gear.

mounted the Fuelreservoir and reworked the whole electric.

Make myself a proposal for a new Batteryholder - think it will be fine.

Insert new Battery 12V 17Ah 200CCA - shall be ok, the Old one was 12V 11Ah with 90CCA.

now searching for a cheap replacement for my corrupted PTO.

Maybe i have to rework something, but this is nothing new.

And again still waiting for Material - sniff

Sorry, no Pics Today oh Sunday, - Coffee Time -

Parts are prepared,

2 pulley's are drilled to 18mm for the Collarbearing shaft and shortened,

so that 2 pieces will fit together on Shaft.

The Original Pulleyshaft was bit damaged by dismounting, now it is rewoked for continouse use.

PTO is prepared, but will not be mounted.

hopefully nothing is forgotten...

wait for workshop...

That looks very nice. Did you run into any problems with the position of the pulleys?  What is the Horse Power of the new engine?
