towing rig

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks, I'm thinking of buying a log splitter. Due to where my shed is I need to be able to tow the splitter with my 518H. With the WH tow attachment so low, how would you rig it to be able to tow a splitter that is made to tow behind a car or truck? Any ideas? Thank you, DWC

I have a cheapie 2" receiver hitch I picked off fleabay.

Nowhere near as heavy duty as the ones sold by the vendors on our site but it gets the job done ok.

Then I bought a ball mount with the appropriate drop / raise for the couple different trailers we move.

These pics aren't ideal but you can see what I'm using if you zoom in on the first.

The second shows the end of the hitch where it bolts on.

Just thinking out loud----Is your hitch mounted anywhere else, or on the axle housing only?

I am thinking that a really heavy load could cause the axle housing to break....

I agree.

I've had that thought as well

I have had some extremely heavy loads on this tractor but that doesn't mean I should keep doing it.

I actually have a plan to put this particular hitch on Trina's 657 because she does not haul super heavy loads like this tractor does.

At that point I'll either buy one or have a friend of ours make up one that utilizes the lower hitch Point as well as the axle Square.

Here's my first shot at a rig that uses both the transaxle and the lower hitch point.  Not pretty, but for my use, form follows function.

To overcome the slight taper of the transaxle I used a couple lengths of conveyor belting cut to fit under the 2" angle.   It might also possibly help to dissipate sudden shocks on the hitch with heavy loads over rough terrain.

Cheers!

Dave

Mine is not a receiver type, but it does have a high ball mount and the original drawbar.  Also serves as a weight carrier.

It bolts to the seat pan bracket and the tranny drawbar pin.

Try putting all of that on a 25hp cub cadet from Home Depot and then use it :snooty:.

I have built two receiver hitches the first one uses the axle housing and the hitch mount. The other uses the axle housing and the top of the transmission where the fender brackets mounts.

I used  2" receivers on my tractors by Scott and Tom (Rupprechts Welding), and a Harbor Freight 6" Drop/Rise hitch to tow my logsplitter around.
