snapped lever deck carriage assembly

Recommended Posts

Barbara

Lever snapped as noted above. 1986, 312-8, can't recall right now if the deck is 46" or 48".

Question # 1: Would a weld repair be a viable option?

Question # 2: Where can I find a replacement carriage assembly if not?

Photos attached.

Thank you for any help you can provide. Otherwise, tractor is still running great!

1. Seems to me a weld would work.

2. Check classifieds here or CL in your area. Vendors on this site may also have something...Check under Vendors - classifieds...

Good luck!

If you weld or know a good welder it could be repaired, but the used part from @daveoman1966 will get you back out on the turf for less money than taking it to a shop.

Yes, that could be easily welded and made stronger than original by welding a small flat reinforcement bar to the top side where the stress is greatest.

You should also replace the missing center roller which caused the bar to fail.

Looks to me to be a 48 in deck.

if you find a good welder in your area, don't hesitate to ask how would he, reinforce that area? experience in a welder is everything, they can reinforce a failure, into a non issue. I think a side and top reinforcement , to that hole would really nail it, Pete

If welded, I’d clean up around the radius of the cross bar and weld it good from top to bottom on both sides.  It looks like it might have been lacking some strength for a while.

Sure does, 48" SD deck.

Weld. Add a piece of flatbar as noted and, get rollers on the deck.

What's the duck tape doin'? Tack (stitch) weld a piece of 16 ga galvanized CRS over the hole (?). Paint.

Not shown in the picture, I then added a piece of the CRS on the discharge chute. :handgestures-thumbupright:

The duct tape keeps the clippings from flying out. We aren't welders - I wouldn't be on this forum if we were.

Thank you so much for all of your help. Offering to meet me in Lexington was really kind. I am probably not going to get the assembly from you, but I do need the rear roller.

Would you be able to mail me one? Whatever you want for the roller and shipping will be fine.

Thanks!

Barbara

Hi Jeff,

The rollers on our model are attached on a separate rod. They measure approx: 8.5 cm long, and 6.5 cm in diameter. See pics:

Unfortunately, the rod is bent on the side without a roller.20181012_223436.jpg.1b8322b9bc22943f2e19acdcf9b2fdba.jpg20181012_223313_resized.jpg.60a1d586bad25198fc9ea73ce0027abf.jpg20181012_223341_resized.jpg.9644cdc67a885063f10ee64c4b51a5da.jpg

Would anyone have the two rear anti-scalp rollers and the axle they are on?

It is easy enough to straighten that bent shaft (axle).  Just hold a block of wood against it and hammer it back straight. The shaft bracket is welded to the main 3/4" axle and you'd have to replace the whole match, unless you can cut and weld.
