Ok guys seen many pics of both original and some with stacks. My question is Is a stack quiter or is it just for looks. Just wondering.

Mostly for looks.  A few might be quieter, but most are louder.  A stack just gives our little tractors a bit more of the big tractor look.

Actually if you fab your own free flow header before the stack it definitely will give you a bit more power. I'm about to make another one and I use rigid conduit from the hardware store then either fab a new mounting flange for the head bolts or rob the one from the old muffler. The key is no right angles....just curves.

Also a free flow air filter and bigger carb jet. All three changes will make about 20% more power. Some remove the governor but I dont usually fool with it.

If you  re-purpose an old Harley muffler you get a nice mellow sound, looks good too.

The one on my b80 is actually a cub Muffler that is bolted onto the end of a 6 inch piece of extension pipe.

It is very quiet compared to a lot of other mufflers.

As stated above, a lot of us do it pretty much for looks.

I love the look of a sky pointing exhaust whether it is on any size tractor or a full size truck.

I did it for that and also to get the exhaust up away from my face as I was driving through the woods.

If you are using the tractor as a mowing machine and you get close to low-hanging trees that needs to be put in as a consideration against a stack.

Pullstart

Cherry bombs aren’t too bad of a sound tone, right color too!

Mostly just done for looks, however I was very pleased with the sound of mine when I put it on...guy I bought it from had attempted to make a stack...thing was just plain ugly and blew exhaust fumes right in the operators face. The one on it now is one I recycled off a friends Massey Ferguson 135

      Gentlemen,

I just changed the muffler on my ‘69 Charger 12.

There are quite a few Gravely 18543 aftermarket mufflers out there so I decided to purchase 2; 1 from Amazon for $45 and 1 from NAPA (7-03679) for $72. Both are made in Taiwan and while the Amazon muffler actually felt a tad heavier to me, its welded construction was poorer so I decided to use the NAPA muffler.

      To complete the installation, I needed a 1.25” x 4” black pipe nipple and a 5/16” x 1-1/4” exhaust clamp (NAPA 733-5323).

In conclusion, it seems to me the sound out of the Gravely style muffler is noticeably quieter than the classic pepper pot. Worth the $80 to me!

I have a 522xi and noticed the muffler is glowing red as shown in this video? Should I be concerned and fix it to normal operating temps or is this expected?

      Thanks,
      JMack

Finally got the stack installed, getting that threaded pipe out of the head needed a little persuasion but all went well, and it looks fantastic thanks to Jim Kemp!

I am in the process of restoring a 72 Raider 8 and decided I would beef it up a bit with a custom stack. Currently the motor is out of the tractor and am waiting for a rod, piston, cam shaft and bearing set. Motor was in total self destruct mode when the previous owner didn't check the oil 🙄🤦🏼‍♂️ So I made this stainless stack out of sch 5, 2 inch pipe and reduced to 1". Decided I didn't like to looks of threaded pipe so I found a couple valve parts to act as the flanges, and am going to weld the other flange to a threaded nipple and screw into the engine block. Let me know what you think! Trying to decide if I should leave it flat, mitre it or weld a turnout on it!
      Jake

Also, I'm going to hold out for now until I can hear it run straight piped, but considering rolling a stainless screen down to 1" and packing gap between the stack and the screen with muffler packing. Has anyone else ever done this? Looking for ideas and comments are welcome!
      Jake
