How to start, and stop, a Suburban with a Clinton?

I know there is ** a  choke on these things but I don't actually see how to stop it. How do you shut off a Suburban with a Clinton?

Yepp.

I found a ground to plug strap the restorer had attached to a head bolt.

on my david bradley there is no kill switch other than choking it,  so as fast kill i tied a piece of string to the plug wire to yank just in case

Are your sure no choke? What model Clinton and what carb?

1960 400/550 suburban. The ground wire goes to the throttle lever control body which there is (or should be) an isolated bolt. When the lever is pulled all the way back it makes contact with the isolated bolt and therefore grounds it.

Always best to post some pics if you can. Some stuff just isn't factory anymore so it's tough to internet diagnose if anything has been changed. 

 

Post a pic of the carb, can't believe it wouldn't have a choke

Guys it's quite likely I'm missing something here. :D

 

I couldn't find a way to engage a choke.

It hasn't been started in quite a few years. It started on about the 5th pull maybe. 70* and dry in the cellar where it was.

 

Here's a pic of the tag.

I'll get a couple of the carb later when light is better.

I have one but it's a little fuzzy and I got it too close. I'll get some better ones later. I don't know if this tells you anything.

There doesn't appear to be any sort of air filter on this unless it is built into the Round Disc on the right hand side.

Looks like I can see a choke shaft close to the intake. On most carbs the lever is on the other side.

Good for the ground strap, on the 656 before I figured out I can choke it to kill it, I was using my pocket knife to ground the plug wire out. At the big show, I accidentally hit the plug wire before the head bolt.  I’m glad I didn’t take out one of @Tgtack O.E. @Bear G‘s clan with a flying blade!

I've done that but without the jackknife. Just threw my arm around.

OldChevy. HEI ignition. Not advisable to repeat.

There should be an extra wire coming out of the points which are behind the flywheel. It should land on a nylon insulator  on the back of the bearing plate. this wire goes right to the points grounding and killing. This is for a B1290 yours might be a little different. Can't read your model ...sorry EB your pics suck:)  I made my own kill switch out of a piece of copper. You could also extend the wire to a convenient grounded switch like a 401.

instead of a key switch on the 502, I placed a push button start switch, and grounded that.  Nice and centered in the dash and no sparkies.  :blink:

I think you've got yourself a 59rj with a suburban hood grafted onto the back of the original hood.  Belt guard is homemade.  Fuel tank is wrong too.  Kinda like one I saw at the big show that was a mix of rj and suburban.  Still a really nice machine!

I'm with Dells68, looks like the hood was graphed together, Suburban front section with an RJ rear or homemade rear section.

RJ-59 with modified hood

Not sure what that ring is on the left axle tube

Can't quite tell what's up with the pedal linkage but it appears like it was extended so the pedal sits more forward than the normal link would allow.

Something's up with the front spindles and steering linkage. Just can't make out exactly what's going on

John, keeping in mind I know next to nothing about these little RJ's and Suburbans...

What you're saying about the extended pedal linkage makes sense because my honey noticed that although the tractor is physically shorter than her 657 it definitely has a longer feel to it.

 

I'm curious to know why you think that is a replacement engine? I know they had Clinton's in them back then but obviously no idea where this one would have come from.

 

How would I go about trying to figure out what that engine came out of originally?

'Fish & Dells are spot on. If it was the original motor it would have been a B1290. That motor possibly came off a tiller or a reel mower or some other implement of destruction. Real close to a B1290  Here's a link where you can research Clintons  some more. Clintons are a lot like Onans... either you love them or hate them. Charlie @clintonnut forgot  more about Clintons than most guys know. He's not on here much anymore but you might be able to reach out to him on FB.

It almost looks like someone took a 'Burb hood and filled in the dash area to mimic a RJ hood. It appears that the hole for the throttle cable passes through in the wrong spot but that's slicing hairs.

Look up under the rear of the hood and see if there are patch marks there. My guess is that what is going on here is someone had a RJ59 carcass that he was trying to make somewhat correct with whatever parts he could or had on hand. Hats off to that PO as he most likely didn't  have access to the talent and knowledge here on RS! Probably no internet to do  any kind of research on.
