My Honey's 657 Repaint & refresh

Recommended Posts

I am officially declaring this rebuild:

 DONE !!!

:woohoo:

At least... To the point of full functionality.

Known things to do:

Add a couple spacers behind front wheels.

Paint a few small things.

We're going to add a steel reinforcement plate below the seat pan to stiffen it up some.

Today I did the fabrication on the air cleaner and also made up a couple lower hood hinge adapter plates. We needed the plates because the hood was about 3/4" too far back... Bent, wrong, who knows?

Here's a few pics.

On the left is a piece of scrap I started with for both projects.

On the right is the top brace seen in the following pics.

IMG_20180810_102636013.jpg.caa8867db97b93267deedc432ed44432.jpg

In this pic you see the above brace, a lower one I made from an old tool box lock bar, and the extension pipe between the carb and air cleaner.

That pipe is a piece of 1-1/2" id to od exhaust adapter cut to 5" length.

How it sets with hood closed.

And here's a shot of the lower hood hinge adapters.

I cut the ends of the piece of scrap and drilled out the elongated holes to a round 1/2". Then drilled the holes for the other end with the existing tractor hinge pins to 3/8". Also drilled the hood holes from .46/.48 oblong to round .5 inches.

After a fair pile of grinding and fitting they went in... Nice and snug.

End result is it moved the hood forward 3/4" and up 1/2" for better engine clearance.

Eric!  It turned out great.  When you get a chance, you need to post the proverbial before and after pics together.  You guys went through some trial and tribulation moments but you made it through and now you have a very special and unique :wh:!

WELL DONE SIR and Especially your Honey!

:text-coolphotos:           So,    what was the work ratio on this build?   From what I've seen your honey did most of the work.     :ychain:

That is absolutely true Dick !!!!

:handgestures-thumbupright:

Trina did more than me on disassembly.

And all the messy paint and rust removal on everything but the nuts, bolts, washers, and a few small parts.

She did about 99 percent of the painting.

She did a lot of the reassembly as well.

I don't know what the actual ratio is but I can tell you she really took the task on with a lot of drive (:hide:) and stuck with it to completion.

She's amazing to work with.

Careful Eric, because she really likes that one  :D  you may be getting another, and another, and another :ychain: that tends to happen rather easily once you get bitten by the  :wh: bug.

I'm VERY ok with that.

We're adding a little extra to the back of the shed.... Horse barn.

I put up a 14x18 shed about 2 years ago, and I'm already starting to double park them  Depending on which tractor I want to use I may have to move another one out of the way :text-lol:

So when are you adding a second story?

Our workshop/shed has a 16 x 20 interior space with 2 overhangs.

On the near side you can see a C160 rolling chassis for size reference. That overhang will keep the rain off a :wh: but not the sun or snow.

We're adding a separate roof on the back that's enough for 3 Tractors covered space.

Also digging out from under the shed to add room for smaller stuff like trailers or other equipment.

My show tractors for October Festivals.
RJ59, 1045, 657 w/sickle bar, 10HP and D200. Just love the attention and hearing the stories of grandpa or growing up had one. Always can see the joy these Horses bring to the spectators. Than telling them the WH history story along with Speedex story always intrigues them.
Than of course there is always someone that needs to get one out of the way.
Last year it was the 1045 and the PO was so excited to learn I got her running and been mowing my grass all summer. Of course I had to let him drive her around.
      This year it’s a 702 I think I getting this week.
So many were engrossed by the Sickle Bar never knowing such was available on garden tractors.

If you read the restoration thread you'll see that one of my recent posts involves me snapping off the end of the crankshaft during an attempted repair.
You'll also see about a Briggs & Stratton engine  I'm going to use.

What I'm looking for in this thread is if anyone has ever put an older style Briggs & Stratton in place of a Tecumseh or even a Kohler....

What are the things I need to watch for?

I'm accustomed to using Non detergent oil in all older small engines.
Thanks to @pfrederi I have the manual for the Tecumseh and it says to use detergent oil BUT it is printed in 1998... Over 30 years after DOM on my engine.

      What do you folks use??

      I've ordered this set

      https://www.redoyourhorse.com/tecumseh-4-pc-engine-decal-set/

from our awesome vendor Terry @Vinylguy.

I know where the balloon sticker goes and the oil sticker.

Where does the large "Solid State" one belong??

      Thanks!!
