Removing paint

Recommended Posts

Jerm’s Dad

I have a 854 that has the 2 piece gas tank. I believe it's made of aluminum. What is the best way to remove the paint? It looks very rough as it is. I have the inside clean.

I have used carb. cleaner many times, and brake fluid eats paint off if not cleaned off immediately.

Rust-oleum  aircraft remover. Spray it on wait 10-15 min and wire brush the paint off. Available at Wal-Mart for about $9.

If you are replacing the gasket you could soak it in lacquer thinner. Then clean good with acetone or your preferred metal prep before repainting.

:WRS:       Read the ingredients label on the product you are considering. Highly alkaline products like sodium hydroxide can eat aluminum!

This is true @953 nut. After the paint is removed wash your part of with some brake cleaner. I've used this stripper multiple times to strip paint off of carburetors as I don't like any paint on my carbs. One carb I have was stripped this way 3 years ago & still looks & works good.

I use this cheap blaster from HFT with glass beads (not sand).

Thanks everyone for the great tips. New at this and don't want to do anything that will end up costing more down the road.
