Current dinosaur I have here is an old 1977 Toyota Land Cruiser - model FJ40KCJA or better known as the short wheelbase hardtop model.

I used to work on those when they were new in the late 60's. Even then they were known as a tank and just about indestructible. When I worked for Toyota at that time it was thought the engine was a take off of the Chevy 235 straight 6. We had a demonstration ramp set up in the front lot. If anyone could climb that ramp with any stock vehicle other than a Land Cruiser they would get a $100.00. That was a lot of money in those days and no one every collected it as far as I can remember.

Last I knew...this '67 was still sitting across the street from my Mom's, out in Colorado.

I'm not fond of the color but the body looks pretty straight... I'd buy it if'n I was lookin'... Folks have paid a lot more for a lot less up here in the rusty north east.

Here’s my 1970 D100 short bed that I should’ve kept as the patina was awesome  . It was a former California DOT truck (318 auto). You could barely read the lettering on the doors and it had a brass plaque on cab with its I.D. number on it . The GMC S15 in the background was 93 single cab loaded with bucket seats and counsel . That had the 4.3 vortec CPI injection with 195hp , 700R4 trans and 3.42 limited slip . It was a rocket, lay posi marks forever and could cherp the tires going into 3rd. Surprised quite a few Mustangs and Camaros back then .

I still own a1984 Chevy C10 short bed from North Carolina (all original stock) . The truck is totally blowed apart at the moment. The cab , front end and frame has absolutely no rust (like Desert dry clean). The bed is a different story as it had a bed liner and rusted out the floor. The rear bottoms of the quarters and inside of steak pockets where the hinge for tailgate are gone . Along the top of bedside are banged up pretty bad too (it was used as a truck) . So any of my southern friends know of a good bed let me know. I found a picture of a truck that looks identical to mine but much nicer and hopefully someday mine will look as good.

@AMC RULES Craig pull the trigger on either of those beauties.....don’t let them slip through your fingers procrastinating  !

Gorgeous pic of the original!

Mack B... My father learned to back a trailer in a Mack B in the early 60's.

He still knows the guy and he still has it!

my second vehicle was a 68 Dodge D100 pickup 318 3 speed on the tree, was dad's handy-me-down. Unfortunately it was a rust bucket and smoked and used oil real bad..I replaced the motor from an 69 dodge charger that a neighbor had. Who ever owned that poor charger , never changed the oil and the lifters were all gummed up. swapped the lifters and heads over from the original motor, then the oil lite stayed on at idle. Dad then traded it in on a 72 Dodge D100, 318 3 speed on the tree, manual brakes and manual steering, when someone order the truck they checked off the box for the SE package which gave you the deluxe interior and A/C. So you had A/C with manual steering, it was a bear to parallel park !!! I then got into darts for several years till I bought a pair of 74 Ramchargers. I eventually got tired of fixing them all the time and bought a new 88 Dodge Dakota 4x4 5 speed 3.9 throttle body fuel injected. It was rated for a 3,000 lb trailer towing. I used it to tow a 2500 lb custom built tilt car trailer and a 3300 lb 70 Dart Swinger 340 to car shows. It struggled some but got the job done. Sold the Dart in 95 and bought a 69 Dodge Dart GTS 383 big block 4 speed. Which has been basically sitting ever since as a project for someday. If you know me I'm sure you have seen me pulling some big loads of tractor into the show with my little Dakota. It has brought a lot of tractors to my house over the year. In 2015 it blew a brake line and took me a year and a half to make the necessary repairs. now the clutch slips if I drive it to far, so it sits around  a lot. I keep it hooked to my trailer to keep the township off my but, some kind of loop hole. As soon as the truck turned 25 years old I put antique tags on it so I don't have to get it inspected or renew the tags on it anymore.

Once Dad stopped driving his bought new 93 Dodge W2500 ram Pickup with  Cummins and a 5 speed gear box everyday. I started using it whenever possible to go to shows. It was supposed to come to me in his will, but he got tired of paying tags and insurance on it he signed it over to me in 2016. It is now my horse hauling mule. The frame and underside is in real great shape since it wintered in Florida since 98 when he retired. The paint doesn't look that good. It seems just about every time I take it out somebody wants to buy it. i have lots of memories tied to both my Dakota and my 93 Cummins, especially when it comes to hauling wheel horse tractors. I've always considered my self a truck guy. I like my muscle cars but I NEED a truck !!!!!

sorry for my long ramble :hide:

My all time favorite truck:

GMC "Crackerbox" with a screamin 2 cycle Detroit Diesel. These guys are just plain mean looking. As I understand they were hard on the driver. Guys paint these up all wild and show them now. I remember when I was a kid, a local moving company had one of these with "Big Mama " across the grille! :)

Squonk—one word—“BEASTLY”:wicked:

Eric J—:wwp: I am a GM guy at heart although I have owned and do own other brands.  However, my favorite Diesel engine put in a pickup from the factory is a Cummins for sure!  I like the mellow ways of the T-444E in my 2002 Excursion no doubt, but there is just something special about a p-pump 12 valve when it comes to a hard working hauling machine.  If I acquire that ‘69 Chev in the opening post, that is the engine that I would like to install in it one day when I have more money and more time!

These are all great trucks guys, keep em coming.

:clap:As a lifelong gear head, I’m really enjoying the pictures and the stories

I had few S-10s along the way an '82 longbed Isuzu(LUV maker) 4cyl 4spd, 2 '87s both iron Duke 4cyl 4spd short beds, '92 2.8 v6 5spd short bed, then the bought new '95 2.2 4cyl 5spd with every option minus keyless door locks, then the boy came along I got a '97 GMC 1500 305 5spd 4x4 extended cab but without the opening rear door it was rough getting the car seat in/out so that's when I got the 2000 Silverado, seems like I just keep evolving, here's a pic of one of the '87s first it was beige then painted it and wheels with my version of "murdered" out circa 1993, Jeff.

So, last time I was in Colorado visiting Mom...

we passed through Ridgeway, and had to stop at the True Grit Cafe.

Basically, it is where The Duke(John Wayne) hung out while making the movie.

While out front, they were celebrating some annual frontier days...

I discovered this early '50's era Studebaker pick up just hanging around out back...

I always thought, all done up...these things make for the coolest custom, and rat rod trucks.  :handgestures-thumbsup:Image result for 50 studebaker truckImage result for 50 studebaker rat rod truck

Here you go, Mike. The sound of a Jimmy 6-71 is music to my ears as well. I did a number of teardown and rebuilds of these engines that were in our 30-footers while in the CG.

@PeacemakerJack, Josh I see where you would like a Cummins in that '69 if you were to it right, but I'm sure if you search YouTube for Detroit Diesel 4-53 in a C/K Chevy and sounds much like the video John post of the 6-71 in the crackerbox , keep that GM all GM :ychain:, not to mention how fast you could grab all 4 gears, Jeff.

I’ll definitely take a look into that. How reliable, cost effective, and available  are those motors? The Cummins 6BT excels in those areas.  This option has me interested for sure:techie-typing:

Thanks Jeff!

@wheelhorseman that Chev is a beauty and what a great story to boot. Thanks for sharing and I would like to see a thread on that truck with vintage pictures and current pictures along with the stories. I’m sure that you have some interesting stories with that truck given all the years of ownership...

Those ole Detroit's were reliable IMO but being 2 cycle/stroke they have a tendency to leak oil, they were used in any thing from from farm/industrial and Marine applications from 2 to16 cylinders,  @shallowwatersailor John having worked on them in the Coast Guard he would be one to tell the pros and cons with the engines as far as parts Detroit is still making engines but keeping up with the EPA now 4 stroke and before GM split up everything it was actually Detroit Diesel /Allison(transmisson) subsidiary plus they used the roots type blower for boost before turbos became big, Jeff.

Not that old but it’s older than my adult kids. I bought it setup just like you see it in ‘94 when it was a year old. A2DFA023-8B65-4E19-93A1-0240ABF04E73.jpeg.1e1d901df1d2a5c5268e467326c27700.jpeg8756CDFB-855A-4DB4-81CB-4A2D75503836.jpeg.878e9566d1ee04b2fa6fc2998ae73e41.jpeg

The Broncos today are priceless. My dad had a 71 Highboy with the 300 inline and NP435 trans. It plowed snow and hauled firewood then became mine. You could put 35-36 tires on  with no problem.

As the classic full size trucks are becoming so popular driving up cost.  I think the square body S10/15’s and Ranger’s are the next big thing . What’s old is new again except this time it’s going to be LS and Coyote 5.0 swaps .
