Does the chain need to be sharpened or modified a certain way to cut those long rip cuts?

yes  the chain has be mod to 10 degree angle  or buy a ripping chain i ripp that stack of 26 planks  10'6" lg on one chain an hand sharpen one time

that was five logs  most of saturday an sunday with stilh 290 farmboss gave the saw time to cut  would go a lot faster with bigger saw  like to have band saw mill  but have to build a pole barn  limted on space
