My brother and myself are currently tackling one of two 1978 D-250's recently purchased. I was considering using one for a parts tractor but it runs well and seems to only need some front axle / PTO bearings and the 3rd / 4th gear  and fork. So here is my attempt to document the repairs. I purchased a shift assembly on ebay from a 1976 but the parts I need are the same and Shuboxluver is sending me some gears. It may need the 6 spline shaft also.

Thats me on the beast.

Inspection of problem. Where is 3rd / 4th gear?

Missing 3rd / 4th gear shifting fork.

New used fork from ebay shifter assembly with spring and bearings. Tomorrow I will upload a picture of a tool we made to reinstall the fork keeping spring and ball in place.

Definitely going to follow this thread, @Big_Red_Fred Fred promised to buy one with a FEL so I need to know how to work on them. How is the engine. It does look like a beast. Good luck with the repairs.

Both engines run great. The only problem is neither one came with the complete oil bath air cleaners. Ill probably convert to paper filters.

Not hard to work on a D-250 all you need the repair manual and a set of metric tools and a parts dealer :D

Been there done that and still doing it :)

Really like the detail pictures good work guys

I uploaded a file called Gutbrod 2500 transaxle, from what I gather it is the same as the D-250. I hope it helps others as it is a bear trying to find meaningful info for these things. here is the link .

In the upper righthand corner is the tool I made from a part from the ebay shifter. It is needed to hold the spring and ball in while installing the gear fork. Also you can see some gaskets made by my brother.IMG_1768.JPG.77b1456a635db9316a7a666d950cf2bf.JPG

This is the repaired shifter with all three gear forks.IMG_1769.JPG.cddf9dd3a7b939b44f6532107e0b81db.JPG

The repaired one and the one from ebay, you can see the rod missing that I used to make the tool.IMG_1771.JPG.0c10909d910f130e83399cf0d3cac923.JPG

Here is the transmission off. What a huge pain to remove. Now the real fun will begin.IMG_1766.JPG.13f19a54a90bb9742d6ad984419cf72d.JPG

Here is the 54 inch hydraulic John Deere plow that will go on this monster when I figure out what the proper male connector size is on the D-250. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

After unbolting the 8 mm Allen headed bolts,  we discovered we couldn't remove the right hand gear shaft. We investigated online looking up youtube videos of Gutbrod transaxle repairs and found that we should have removed the PTO cover and gears to remove the shaft. Should have followed the manual step by step instead of skipping around. More to come.

Saturday we decided to tackle the transaxle again. The manual said to remove the right hand tire.

Thats me getting ready to remove the rear PTO on the back side. You are looking at the front side.

The manual said to use a plastic hammer to remove the PTO but I had to use a steel hammer with gentle persuasion.

There is a big clip behind the PTO bearing that needs to be removed and it was not as easy as you would think it should be.

Splined end of shaft chewed up also, filed it down a bit to get the 3rd / 4th gear on but it is obvious it is trash. It also looks burnt.

IMG_1805.JPG.288ec527ee9812c80c52aba20f66fd24.JPG

That is my brother trying to remove the parking brake disk that is also chewed up as well as the splines on the PTO end. There is a clip that needs to be removed. The brake disk will need to be cut off.

IMG_1807.JPG.162093c90a22605895aa31295937aa78.JPG

Here are a bunch of gears I received from shuboxlover , he is working on getting me the shaft I need also.

IMG_1806.JPG.20b1aefca4639378f8a08b4d50a4e0e5.JPG

Here is what we have surmised so far, 3rd / 4th gear blew up and destroyed the shifting fork and shaft. Parking brake removed , maybe locked up and chewed up brake disk and chewed up orbital gear a bit. PTO shaft not working because there was a clip missing behind the bearing making it slip past the engagement gear. A spacer was also in there that doesn't look like it belongs that probably chewed up the PTO side of the shaft spline. Now its clean things up, paint and wait for more parts.

So we changed the hydraulic fittings on the other D-250 today. The tractor would not turn to the left and it was speculated it froze and that was a correct assumption because it was fine on Saturday after the 45 degree weather. We  siphoned out the old steering gear oil out and flushed with diesel fuel to remove water and replaced it with fresh 80-90 gear oil. I am sure there is rusting going on because of the color of the oils coming out but that is a project for another day. We also tightened the belt to the altinator now the light doesn't come on.

We had to loosen the dash panel to have enough room to take out the glass coolant reservoir. There is a plastic screw type cap between that and the battery that isa little awkward to get to on the steering gear box.

You can see the hand pump siphon I used to remove, flush and refill the gear box oil.

I’m looking for a transmission dipstick to a D-180. Let me know if you see one.

Hey guys,I have a dilemma I need some help with. I have a 1969 GT 14 that I replaced the transmission and pump on. For about 2 weeks afterward everything worked great, but while mowing at a pretty good pace I noticed a shudder and the tractor slowed a little but not bad. The more I rode it the slower it got until it barely moves. What stumps me is the hydraulics are still very strong,as in I can back the 3 point under the bumper of my truck and if you lift the arms all the way up the front wheels of the tractor will clear the ground. Have checked the tow valve and checked the internal filter, but no luck. I have also checked and replaced the forward and reverse bypass springs and the lever is moving the cam to full travel, forward and reverse. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi All, It's time for me to sell the D-250 I've had for the last 8 years.  It’s useable as is, or would be a great project bundle for further restoration.

I am selling a large package: the running tractor, a refurbished snowblower (48”), parts snowblower, mower deck (60”), tiller (40”), front plow blade (60”), Cat 0 3-Point Hitch with adjustable top link, WH 3-Point tool bar, wheel weights and tire chains.  Also included is an extensive part collection, nearly a second tractor worth.  I will include the original manuals, an original 1976 sales brochure, and repair manuals for the tractor and the engine.  I made electronic copes of all of the above, and stored the paper copies to prevent further wear. This is one of the most complete D-250 tractor/attachment bundles I’ve seen.

Some highlights from the available parts: Frame rails, extra engine, water pump, extra transaxle, extra gears, including worm gears (stored in oil bath), Front wheel set, carburetor, carb rebuild kit, rebuildable original radiator, extra radiator overflow bottle, rebuilt alternator, new voltage regulator (I was planning to change over to an alternator setup from the generator), new in package Renault engine seals, new PTO seals, ignition maintenance parts.  There are also many panels, frame pieces, cables, levers, tubes (lines) and hardware in the collection.

The tractor engine runs smooth.  There are around 1050 original hours on it; It’s a 1976 edition.  Everything works, except the dash lights and the rear lights (disconnected b/c of fender).  I just haven't sorted out the wiring, but it is all there.  Headlights are good and working, as are all of the gears and levers.  The four tires are nearly new Carlisle Multi Trac, with nubs still on them.  The rear tires have been filled (ballasted) with Rim Guard for extra traction.  The hydraulic pump, front PTO clutch and brakes operate but could use a tune up.  I’ve used it for mowing and snowblowing on hills, driveway and around my land. I don’t have an original WH seat.  The snowblower was rebuilt a few years back, and assembled with all new hardware and bearings.  The mower deck gearbox was professionally serviced recently, and has a new set of blades with only a half dozen mows.  The rear fender needs a repair, but all pieces are available.  The plow and tiller are due for restoration.  The Points, Condenser and rotor have all been replaced and tuned in.  The battery is good.  I've rebuilt the carb, replaced the fuel pump and changed out the plugs within the last 30 hours.  The replacement radiator is from a Kawasaki engine; it was installed with new hoses. There are also new custom hydraulic hoses and a new hydraulic lift cylinder.

Here's a video of me mowing, this past summer.

Transporting this haul in one trip will require a pickup truck and a large trailer.

I have developed a kit that allows a Wheel Horse / Toro hydrostatic tractor to be operated by a pedal on the right side of the tractor. The original forward/reverse lever can be retained or removed. The kit includes everything needed to install the pedal kit and installation is simple with the help of a downloadable installation manual. Additionally, only one (1) 1/4" hole will need to be drilled which can be done by a hand drill. No other drilling or cutting will be necessary. Any tractor with this kit can be converted back to stock without any visible evidence that kit was installed. However, you'll never want to do that

The kit operates very simply and similar to modern tractors. When the pedal is pushed forwards the tractor will move forwards. When the reverse pedal is pressed downwards, the tractor will moved in reverse. If the operator takes his foot of the pedal at any time, the pedal will automatically center itself and the hydrostatic transmission will return to neutral (stop). This enables the operator to use both hands on the steering wheel or one hand on the wheel and the other operating an attachment like a snow blower, plow, etc.

The foot pedal is custom cast in Aluminum, uses brass bushings to minimize wear, and it closely matches the OEM Wheel Horse BRAKE pedal commonly found on 8-speed manual transmission tractors. Modifications were done to the pedal to add the reverse pedal and adapt the pedal to the rest of the kit. For the most part, the pedal looks like it was designed and manufactured by Wheel Horse / Toro. Additionally, a grease fitting has been adapted to the pedal to further minimize wear and tear and if the brass bushings ever wear out they are fully replaceable without having to buy a whole new pedal.

The pedal kit fits the following series tractors with Eaton hydrostatic transmissions: C-1X5, 300, 400, 500.

My kit can be adapted to older hydrostatic tractors with the Sundstrand transmission, however, you will need to find an updated hydro cam commonly found on ebay. Message me for more information.

Here is a link where you can download the installation manual: CLICK HERE

I am selling these kits for $330 shipped to anywhere in the United States. I offer multi order discounts as well. I will also sell to other countries for additional shipping charges to be determined.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to PM me or post your question here and I will be glad to help. Or you can email me at mattdarling02@hotmail.com.

      Thanks!

Below are pictures of the complete kit and the pedal installed on the tractor. Some modifications have been made since these pictures were taken. For example, the reverse pedal is now cast in aluminum instead of the steel pedal shown below.

New here! hello everyone! In a bit of a pickle here. My father owns a 1993 (I think that is the right year) 520H Wheel Horse. I don't commonly work on tractors but it seemed simple enough. the axle snapped on the left side, so it needed a new transmission. My dad bought a used transmission and I went to work changing everything out. The hydraulic pump that the engine's drive belt attaches to went to a different model/year of tractor, so I had to remove that part and swap it in from the old transmission. In the process I lost all of the oil in the pump (I mention this because I wonder if it has to do with my problem I'm having). When I reassembled everything I started the slow process of filling the transmission. I filled it up and started the engine. When moving the lever forward or backward, it had a tiny bit of power for a little bit and then lost power. The transmission wasn't doing anything, anymore. I though maybe that hydraulic pump needed to be primed, so we took the top hydraulic line off of the hydraulic pump right above the drive belt and used a transfer pump to pump some oil into the pump case. This still didn't work. I don't have enough experience with these hydrostatic transmissions to know if we got a bad transmission or if there is something obvious that I am missing when it comes to a transmission swap. I ask for any insight and help please. If you need pictures or any other info, then let me know what you need. Thank you!
