RJ-58 Side cover

Recommended Posts

RJcollector

Hi, I'm rebuilding an RJ-58 tranny and its all together except the left side cover will not go on because the brake shaft is not lining up with the bearing. Its off by about 1/16th of an inch. The bearing on the other side cover is not cocked. The only parts that are not original in the tranny is the big differential gear and a couple bearings but they are the correct size bearings. It is the correct gear, its just out of another unit. Same part number and everything-3502. Did those big gears vary slightly in size during production? because it seems like if the big gear was about 1/16 smaller, I would be able to push the gears together and the cover would slight right on. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

post 147 in the link Jeff gave is the one you want.  It probably is not the brake shaft not lining up, but the cluster gear shaft.  You should be able to either swing the plate around or use a screw driver to push the brake shaft to get that started.  It's that last 1/4" that is the cluster gear shaft that is listing to port.  Use a piece of fishing line to go around that shaft and pull it a little to line up the bearing.  Make sure you can pull the line out when you get it to go.  :)

Nothing more reassuring than to hear the voice of experience!

@stevasaurus @ACmanThank you for the idea. My problem is that I cant even get the brake shaft started in the bearing hole. Its not just the last 1/4".  Ive tried moving both shafts every which way and the brake shaft seems to be too far towards the front of the transmission by about 1/16th of an inch and it will not go into the bearing. Ill try to get a few good pics so you can see what going on.

Yep, want to see some pictures.  I'm wondering if you have the compatible mushroom gear and bull gear.  There are 2 sets of these, and you need the right pair.  Count the teeth on the small part of your mushroom gear...it is either 8 or 11.  If it is 8, you need the older style bull gear (it has larger teeth).  If it is 11, you need the bull gear with more and smaller teeth.  A picture of those would tell me.  Also, your left side cover plate...does it have a needle bearing or the ball bearing for the brake shaft??

That has to be it!  My mushroom gear has 8 teeth and it didn't really seem like it was meshing correctly with the bull gear but I figured it had to be right because they came from an RJ. That makes perfect sense now because if the gears meshed correctly, that's the 1/16 I need for the brake shaft to slide into the bearing.  I didn't know there are 2 different gears. I guess early RJs had one gear and later ones had the other? Also I have a needle bearing for the brake shaft in this side cover. I have another spare side cover that has ball bearings for the brake shaft. Which one of those is early and later? Thank you for all this information. I appreciate it. I took a few pics but they're not uploading for some reason, Ill keep trying.

Here is a pic of the pair that has the 11 teeth on the mushroom gear and the correct bull gear.  You can see the difference in the bull gears with the one you have.

Here is a couple of pics of the older style bull gear.  Notice the teeth and the number of.

The needle bearing is newer.  If you are going to try to use the older style, you are going to want the ball bearing plate.  Do you have the older style bull gear??

I have the bull gear like the 1st pic and the incorrect 8 tooth mushroom gear. My older style bull gear looks worse than yours in the 2nd pic. :text-lol:

actually, those pictures are from a couple of transmissions that @Jake Kuhn had that I was fixing for him.  :)  He may have the parts you need.  :)

The RJ58 was the big hit for spectators this year at my local festivals here in Carroll County OH.
the children loved getting their pictures sitting on it, then they discovered the bicycle horn under the steering wheel. It’s always a joy even in parades. Just love showing off part of my collection every year and hearing all the stories from those that had WH in their lives at one time. Can hardly wait to get to retirement so I can get some of my other models back to their glory in working order and be able to attend other shows/festivals throughout the year. My fellow tractor enthusiasts always know when a spectacular starts asking about WH, they point in my direction. I study up on the history of the different models and always intrigue those that didn’t know much about how WH came to be. This website is one place that has helped me learn so much about the WH history and I thank you for sharing your knowledge that I am able to pass on to keep WH alive and well.

Well got my new weight yesterday!  My valentines gift from my husband now has the front weight less likely to pop those wheelies!!!!  There might be enough power still but doubt it…. He bought me the RJ from David in Arkansas a few years back we posted on the trip!  The moment we saw the ad on here about the front weight we had to have it!  Seize the moment, don’t know when ever come across another for sell…!  So here I just wanted to share pictures of it!  My tractor is a bit dirty from winter setting but i wipped it down just a little for the photo opt!!
