Jim,

I hear ya, not all of us can afford the nice ones.  As for the surging issue, it may be the intake seal needs to be replaced.

I spent hours looking at the pictures of this tractor before I bought it.I have been collecting parts for my 312a project so I'm aware of the price people are asking and getting for the front end setup alone. The sheetmetal on this tractor while faded is not dented or rusty, the front is tight and it has the 8 1/2" wheels in back. The model tag and serial number are legible so, I may (I hate to say this)restore this machine, On the left side of the hood just ahead of the TORO logo it appears that the decal is crazed. In fact someone put a grasshopper decal on it, I guess someone didn't think it was ugly enough.JAinVA

is that a BFMS onan. if so I believe it's only 16 hp. motor looks like it came off a sears. I traded for a 416-H that had a motor like that on. prblem with mine was that it was never set up right to charge correctly. I eventually swapped it out for a P216. I used the tractor for years before upgrading to a 520. wish i wouldn't have sold it, it was a good tractor. good luck with it

Eric,

Yes that is an engine off of a Sears SS16 garden tractor. It is a BF which is the 3 1/8" bore engine. You have a good eye.As I stated in a previous post the machine had a dead battery and once taken off the jumper battery would not stay running. It could be the stator or the regulator but the wiring is butchered so who knows. The engine will not stay on this 520.I have a 16 Kohler engine I use to test the transaxle and hydraulics. If this engine is any good it will be used on another WH.I plan on putting a fresh P220 Onan on this beast.

The steering shaft looks like it was slightly extended. May have been a big boy on that baby to fit behind the wheel.

I asked about that steering wheel in a post before I got the machine.I thought it was a 97 model because of it.The steering shaft is the same length as all other 520 tractors but the stock wheel on the 97 is much deeper dished.JAinVA

Nice project tractor Jim. Nothing wrong with that. Sears motor or Cub?

Jim, yours still looks like a riser has been added between the wheel and shifter plate from comparing pics,Jeff.

Jeff,

I have not had a lot of time to look at what I dragged home.I have to agree the steering wheel looks like a riser or something was installed. When I figure it out I will post. That 97 is very nice.I'd hate to use one that pretty.

Wishin4a416,The name plate says Sears I believe.I ended up getting a used complete wiring harness for a 520h including the engine harness. When I say hacked I should have said missing. There is only small remnants of the original harness left.

I love a challenge so this one should be fun but right now I trying to find the floor in my shop so I can put the 312a together.

                                                                    Thanks for all the comments,JAinVA

Jim, I wish it still looks as good as it did then the paint is still fairly bright and glossy but the decals are worn on the hood and scratches here and there but maybe now I have 4 others I can make it like new again or just let the battle scars remain as a badge of honor,Jeff.

Jeff,When my son was 8 and was helping me load firewood in a cutover he lost grip on a piece as he was throwing it into the bed.I was piss#d but he made me laugh when he said that the new dent gave the truck character. If they are pristine they probably ain't being used.Luck with getting the 97 back to it's former glory.JimAnderson

Now that we are finding more uses for the 1990 520H with a KwikWay loader I am experiencing some power loss in the hydro after about a half hour to 45 minutes??????
      Ideas?

Selling my trusty WH520H.  ~880 hours (currently used for moving snow when needed so hours may rise) very solid machine, strong and hardworking.  20HP Onan, hydro transmission and hydraulic lift.  Has Matt's foot-pedal conversion for forward/reverse.  Included in the sale is a tall-chute snow blower and 60" mowing deck.  The blower is in excellent condition and is on the tractor currently.  The mowing deck has been a workhorse over the years.  No holes but could use some TLC, probably needs new spindles at some point and could use a couple spots touched up with welder also does NOT have any pulley covers/protectors (see photo).  Tractor has been an incredible tool, very solid and dependable and I'm certainly going to miss her when she's gone.

Recent maintenance: replaced the plugs this summer, fluids as needed (hydro has about 100 hours on fluid/filter; oil was done in the spring and has about 25 hours on it).  Battery is about 3 years old as are the tires, Terra Trac tires on the rear and turfs on the front.  The seat (with arm rests) isn't in great shape.  I've got a cover for the seat, never used.  It's never really bothered me but new seat cover is included in sale as are 4 hub caps, chains for the rear tires, and some misc spare parts (see photos).

I've owed this machine about 8 year and put ~350 hours on her.  She's not a show piece but could be restored.  Sheet metal is generally in shape, no rust however the hood does have a couple dings in it.

I'm only selling because I'm trying to help my son get a small lawn care business started and looking to move to a zero-turn.  The 60" deck is too large for our trailer, the mowing deck lacks pulley safety shields, and we'd like something that mows faster.  My only complaint with this machine is the top-speed (which isn't great when comparing to today's machines) otherwise she's a beast.  They don't make them like this anymore.
