Work horse good or not?

Recommended Posts

williambogner

Hello i was searching upon craigslist and came upon a Wheel Horse Work Horse. Now the guy told me that it was a 12 hp and it was big and strong. Can anyway tell me about the Work Horse. Hes asking 100$ for it and it runs great he said. Is it worth it or not. When he gets a chance hes gonna find out the exact model, age, and all that good stuff. Any someone could fill me in on some background of the machine, thatd be great. THanks!

I dunno about the BIG & STRONG part :D But Wheel Horse made a couple 7 hp models in 1969 and an 8 hp model in 1971 To my knowledge they didn't have a 12 hp model in the Work Horse model. :hide:

Try and get a mkodel # off the tag ask the guy to provide more info. Doesn't sound like to me it has the correct engine!

You might want to ask the seller what color it is. :hide:

I'd say it's probably one of the 1982 to 1984 pewter gray WorkHorses.

The GT (garden tractor) series used 11, 16, and 18 hp Briggs & Stratton engines and were roughly the equivalent of a 310 model as far as the chassis/sheetmetal goes.

WARNING: There were also WorkHorse LT models (lawn tractors) with vertical shaft engines and light duty "frames" and transaxles. They were available in 8, 11, and 16 hp. (I think.) "BIG & STRONG" does not apply to the LT models. :D

Man Stone.....that was a lot of info you pulled up quickly!

If it is what you say it is.... I would say it is worth a $100.

I agree. If it is the one that is a 312 with a Tecumseh engine I'd say it is an excellent deal.

Did around on the site and you will find some advice about proper thrust washers (? can't recall the details) on the PTO side to help the Teccy last a long time.

Does it come with a deck or other implements?

I would say if its a garden tractor version(with a horizontle enginre) :omg: its worth it :hide: but if its the lawn tractor version (with a vertical shaft engine) i would pass on it :hide: or send it to Joel where even he's hiding :omg: :D

To partially answer your question, and to stand up for the Workhorses, if it is a horizontal shaft, it will be a stout tractor. I know that they only have 4 pinion diffs, but to be realistic, how weak is a 4 pinion, even though an 8 pinion is stronger? Mine has proven to be a very reliable, strong, and workable tractor. I am not the least bit leary about it. As a matter of fact, weighing everything, I prefer to use it over the 520, for what I use a WH for.

There is a photo on mine under "1984 GT 1600".

Ok guys. I called him tonite and of course he didnt give me thourough details about this machine. He did let me know though that its a LT 1136. It has a 11 hp motor. To be honest im not sure what kind of engine and i cant even find pictures of it :hide: . Can anyone tell me what kind of engine it probably has or what the original one is and what it looks like?

The LT versions were vertical shaft machines- Basically lawnmowers.

The GT versions (i.e. 1142, 1848) were horizontal shaft tractors nearly identical to a 300 series Wheel Horse.

Sounds like it's NOT what you're looking for...

It's one of these: :hide:

(this one has a 37" deck instead of the 36" deck)

Unless you need something to mow your grass or pull a little cart, you'll probably want to pass on it.
