I just  acquired a GT14 1970,it will not start with key switch, but will fire up and run  if i jump the selenoid ; would this be and indication of faulty pto/clutch  switch? would much appreciate some help . also if this is the case  how   would  I go about getting a new PTO switch.  thnks

:text-welcomeconfetti:to the :rs: You should go to the Manuals section , locate your tractor, and open the wiring diagram. There may be other safety switches that could be causing the problem including a bad ignition switch, a bad solenoid, bad fuse, or simply badly corroded wiring connections.  Just replacing parts without locating the problem can be expensive , frustrating, and non-productive.

In 1970 the 8565 pto switch was replaced by 100769 and now no longer available from Toro.

If the ignition switch sends power to the pto switch in the start position it has to be the pto switch that has failed. Just the 2 switches in the circuit.

:WRS:        The PTO switch has four terminals, two operate the PTO and the other two, the whit wires, will interrupt the current flow to the solenoid when the PTO is on. If you remove the two wires and wire-nut them together the starter should work regardless of the PTO switch position. The attached diagram is for a 1969, but is the same as yours.

You rec'd some really good information from the above input especially the wiring diagrams and the ignition switch operation.  If you still need help will take a look with you.

Aldon

Good to see you diving right in friend.

If you continue to have issue once you follow 953nuts advice I would lean towards the switch as bad.

Seems it's the proverbial weak link.

But pricey. There was another thread from a couple years ago about rewiring to use newer version switch. I think I found it by searching GT wiring....

thanks Aldon and 953 for all your good advice; had to change  pto switch plus  rectifier and now the  starter is missing continuity so one more bites the dust; on the + side  the tractor runs and the pto clicks on/off  next is a minor hydro leak..  that's for l;ater  rgds  ray
