Kohler K301S 12hp problems

Recommended Posts

yzf450motoxrider

I have a kohler 12hp engine in a 312A that's having issues. It will run with the choke on and throttle all the way up. If the choke is turned off it will die. After it warms up it will run without the choke on but only at the lowest throttle setting.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I am a firm beleiver of total fuel system maint when you are having trouble like this.

Flush fuel tank, replace the fuel cock as it has a filter screen that is next to impossible to clean.

Replace fuel line if you suspect any issues with it, or if it looks aged.

Check fuel flow from fuel pump while cranking.  It should pulse fuel, put your finger over it and see if it can build a little pressure.  If not, replace pump.

Now you have ruled out proper fuel flow (TO) the carburetor.  If it still acts up, a carb cleaning / rebuild should be done.  Soak overnight in chem dip if you can.

pulled the fuel line off the intake on the carb turned the engine over and the flow was good so I cleaned out the carb. That did it works great now. It looked like there was some junk in the needle seat that was reducing the fuel flow.

Thanks for letting us know what fixed it. It's always helpful to others having the same problem. A simple search and they find an answer. :handgestures-thumbupright:

      Gentlemen,

I am in need of help. While doing yard work with my K301 powered ‘68 Charger 12 it suddenly came to a stop and won’t start again.

      My troubleshooting so far:

      Fuel:
      • stabil/87 and clean
      • good flow before and after pump
      • carb clean, recently rebuilt, float level correctly set

      Compression:
•good? - blows finger off spark plug hole
•good turnover but doesn’t fire off
      •piston and cylinders move freely
      •valve lash set .008 intake .018 exhaust
•breather assembly correct and recently serviced with new gaskets and filter
•head gasket not broken, head bolts tight, some carbon on head

      Spark:
      •no spark
•all electrical/ignition components were replaced 1 year ago except voltage regulator
•no loose connections, no grounding connections
•inspected and applied graphite to starter shaft
      •changed plug
      •12v to coil good
•cleaned points, points wire has continuity
      •condenser ground good
•swapped battery, points and wire, plug and wire, coil, and condenser from running K301 (‘69 Charger 12)
•points push rod does push out when turning engine over by hand, but unable to get points timed using multimeter method and timing mark on flywheel

      What else should I check/do?

Looking for a good and flat cover plate for the k301 crankcase. My current one is warped causing oil to leak out.

Hey all. I have a Electro 12 with a factory belly blade. It runs* and drives. I had used it to grade my driveway the last 6 yrs. Having moved I'm looking at my options on storing it or selling it. Frankly I have no idea what it is worth. I watched "ISaveTractors" video on 5 things to do with a new to you wheel horse/12hp kohler. (When i got it 6yrs ago) And went thru and did the adjustments and replaced the parts mentioned. It has been a good strong tractor for me until around July of this year. (2023)
*Around July it started dying after running 20-30min. I replaced the carb (Chinese Amazon purchase) with one from isavetractors web site. That seemed to help it idle smoother(the old carbs jets wouldnt adjust), but it still dies at around 20-30min.
      So I've got 2 questions.
      1. What is it worth? (As-Is) and
      2. What do I need to do to fix it?
      Thanks yall!

I am looking for a replacement Kohler for a 1980 c165,it is cradle mounted.
Will a standard mount Kohler work, if I remove the cradle?
       I am located in Massachusetts
        Thanks
