314-8, No Spark

Recommended Posts

scott76

Hi All - I've got an 314-8 that intermittently loses spark.  I've been battling it all summer.  One day I will go out and it will start.  The next day it won't.  I've replaced the ignition switch and that didn't do it.  I've cleaned all of the plugs for the all of the safety switches and that didn't help.   I'm not sure this is indicative of proper function, but all of the safety switch warning lights seem to be working to indicate when a switch is not in the correct position for the machine to operate.   I've bypassed the seat safety switch, but all the other switches are intact.

The one thing I've noticed is that when the key is in the "accessory" position, there is a "clicking" noise that happens every five seconds or so. It sounds like sort of an electronic click, but I can't identify where it's coming from.  I can't seem to tie that noise to a specific event.  AND, I don't recall if it was happening the last time the tractor had spark and started.

I've got to assume that this is some sort of simple electrical issue, but I can't figure it out.  I figured I'd put it out on this forum before bringing it to a repair shop and paying a ton to have it fixed.

Thanks for any help!

Is there an electric fuel pump fitted?

I don't think there is an electric fuel pump, but honestly have no idea.   When it has spark, it runs fine, so I would assume (I know, bad idea) that fuel pump is not the issue?

I was thinking that the clicking may be the fuel pump priming itself?

How have you arrived at intermittent spark, are you sure this is the case?

Ahhh... I will have to look into the fuel pump.  Maybe that will be the clicking.

When it won't start, I have removed the spark plug from the motor, reconnected the spark plug wire and set the plug on the metal case over the motor.  No spark.   Then, seemingly randomly, sometimes, it will start sparking.  I put the plug back in and she starts up, most of the time.  There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

I would have to try another plug first just incase, they can be faulty.

Dirty points could also be the cause. Get some of that reddish brown grit paper not to coarse and give the points a rub, then run a clean piece of paper through to remove any grit. Make sure its the reddish brown stuff though.

Maybe a very silly question, but where are the points?   I've tried a number of spark plugs (albeit they are all from the same place, so maybe they are all bad), so I would lean more towards cleaning the points.

If its a Kolher engine they are (looking from the front) at the bottom of the left side at the front, under a little cover secured by 2 srews.

It is a Kohler, so I will check that out when I get home tonight.  Thanks!

the clicking sound is coming from the hour meter and which motor do you have K or M?

Hi I recently got an old charger 12 that had been sitting in a friends backyard for at least 20 years. The engine spins over and the starter works but it has no spark, I’ve been looking online for some solutions but I can’t seem to find any other charger 12s with my ignition setup. It seems to have a sort CDI box but I’m not sure. Does anybody know how this works or any tips on how to test for where the problem is ?

I need some help. I picked up a 1968 electro 12 (1-7235) that I'm assuming is an early model built with a leftover 67 engine because the engine patina matches the tractor and it has an external generator/starter instead of the magneto. It's a k301S-4712B. I bought it knowing that the engine turns freely and that it had no spark. Being 52 years old I figured it deserved some fresh ignition parts so I replaced the coil, condenser, points (cleaned and set to .020), spark plug (.035), and plug wire, and I still cannot get a spark at the plug or through my spark plug tester. It turns over okay and I've got 12 volts to the positive terminal on the coil. It's been many years since last worked on this type of ignition system and I'm stumped.  I would appreciate any input/suggestions you might have.  If it were something newer I'd suspect a safety switch but I can't see that this has any.

I picked up a wheel horse and I am having trouble finding the connection for this wire. I have no spark and  have searched for the placement of this wire within the distance of its length...any ideas?...can't seem to paste the picture....

I have a late 90's 269H with the Kohler 17HP motor.  After cutting for about 1 hour I turned it off, tried to start it about 10 minutes late and it would not crank.  The dash lights turn on (oil, battery, parking brake), I can hear/feel the relay click but the starter will not turn.
All fuses checked All relays checked no broken/frayed wires
Solenoid will not engage when crossing the terminals with a screw driver and key switch in on position.  Is this a defacto solenoid issue or do I need to check other things?  Also, I am showing that the part number for the solenoid is: 52-435-02.  i found one at http://www.milfordpower.com/R12130-Starter-Solenoid-Replaces-Kohler-52-435-02S-p/r12130.htm

Thanks in advance for any direction or advice.

Two of my 606's both have battery trays and electric start. Both with factory 606 tags. Now my question is why not just get a 656 from the dealer ship? Was it cheaper to get a 606 and upgrade the starter? Both have the proper key ignition switches as well.
