How To Make An 18 Automatic Into A 23 Automatique LSE

Recommended Posts

"D"- Man

Upon inspection, after disassembling the hydro motor, I noticed that the valve plate and the slippers were worn and scratched.  I had disassembled another motor from a parts tractor I had, and the valve plate was much better; however, I did not use an arbor press to remove the shaft and the method I used damaged the back side of the valve plate.  This was very unfortunate as it could have been reconditioned and reused.  I also had a motor from a D-180 that I am parting out, so I decided to have a go at disassembling it and inspecting the valve plate and slippers.  Well, I could hardly believe what I saw...  to be continued!  No, it was impeccable and the slippers were not only scratch free, they had really sharp edges on them, no rounding at all.  I also was able to salvage a perfect "O"-Ring for the bearing to cover plate and one for the shaft.   I still have a bit of cleaning to do to the parts and some inspecting of the valves then it should be ready to begin reassembly.  I have not taken any pictures yet but I may try to get some and post them in the next update.

Proceed on to the acelleration valves, everything looks good here as well.  Next will be the cylinder block/pistons group.

Such attention to detail in the restoration and it's documentation is a great credit to you, I agreed with earlier replies, there are a lot of members following, especially the D owners out there, they're probably like me, opened mouthed with admiration.

This is straight out of the top drawer D man.  :bow-blue:

Thanks Farmer, I have been a bit busier than I expected lately and have no progress to show on this, but I hope to get back to it after the dust settles.  I promise there is plenty more to come.  Lord willing, Mark.

Thanks Richie, I know it takes a bit more time doing it this way, but it wouldn't quite be a resto-mod doing it any other way.

Thought I would insert pics of the Cylinder Block, Piston/Slipper Assembly and Retaining Ring. I did not disassemble the one that I am using for this build; however, I had one that I did take apart so I am adding these pics just for reference. I job-lotted these all in step #157 above.

 A.) Cylinder Block
 B.) Retainer {Inner Flange toward Spring}
 C.) Spring
 D.) Washer {Small opening towards spring}
 E.) Retaining Ring {Spirol Lock}

 F.) Slipper Retainer

G.) Piston {Slipper} 9x (Must be returned to the same cylinder position)

Hydro Motor to Transaxle / Transaxle to Frame

177.) Transaxle motor gasket area taped off
178.) Tape removed/cleaned
179.) Comparing different gaskets, notice the second one would leak!!!
180.) Strainer
181.) Installed
182.) Gasket placed on transaxle with guide bolt
183.) Hex bolts/washers
184.) Motor installed
185.) "I.D." Tag
186.) Installed
187.) Transaxle mounted to frame with Dipstick and Chrome oil fill nipple
188.) Hex bolts/washers {These are not all O.E.M. correct as I did not have the 3/8" x16 -7/8" on hand.  I will replace them later.}

It is also worth noting that I am adding the hydro cooling fan and the bracket, that the fan mounts to, should be bolted on here above the frame; however, I purposely left it off and will install it later.

Had a go at mocking up a couple of the Ag's on the rear, yes I know the tread is the wrong direction. Didn't catch it till after I already had them on. The models that are equipped with a hydro cooling fan, have the mounting bracket sandwiched between the frame and a couple of the transaxle bolts. I temporarily mounted this for a photo op, but will remove and reassemble it later so it doesn't get too bumped around. I am currently trying to source some Woodruff keys {Part# 907346} for the 4 hubs.

Just a little update on my progress, as you may have noticed one of the rear tires does not hold air. This is not due to the tire rather the wheel assembly, specifically, the area where the original valve stem hole was welded shut and ground down. It was taken down too far and this is where the air leaks, so needless to say it's going to have to be rewelded. I still have to get the other two tires mounted and test them for leaks. In the meantime, I assembled the side panels to the frame.

Hex head bolts are not O.E.M. these were originally self-threading.

After giving the paint on the hood a chance to dry and cure a bit, I applied a New Old Stock "Read Operators Manual..." decal on it!

Woodruff keys arrived, ordered 8 so I now have an extra set.  These appear to be the same as the ones for the 953, 1054(A) GT-14 and 18 Automatics. I am hoping to get the 2 hubs that I will be using on the outside off of the axles that they are currently on. Thinking of having a go at soaking in some Acetone/ATF 50-50 mix, for a while, then having neighbor press them out. Will have to wait and see.
