C-120 Partial Restoration

Recommended Posts

Engine looks good in the pictures, clean the carbon off of the piston and valves and try to lap them in to check that they seal properly and reassemble with a new head gasket. Did you download the Kohler service manual from their site?

Think I have an old Kohler service manual around somewhere, but I went and downloaded the manuals from Kohler's website anyway. Thanks for the tip. Is there anywhere I can download a manual for the C-120?

Was able to find one for a 1975, which will help. I'm sure there is not much difference between the 1975 and 1976? For some reason it is harder to find anything for 1976 C-120's.

Here's a couple of photos after I cleaned the cylinder up a little bit. Reseated the valves with a little valve grinding compound and will check the clearances before I button it up. I used a trick I found on here for cleaning up the aluminum head, using the flattest surface I have, a table saw, and some wet sandpaper. It worked great!   I forgot to take a photo of it though.

Finally got the wheels back from the powder coating!  :woohoo:  Ended up costing $115, does that sound reasonable? They turned out great! They look like new.

I don't remember what the color was called, but it sure looks like the original color.

Can anyone tell me if the e-clips used on this tractor are normal clips or specific to Wheel Horse?

Rusty,

I just finished ours 1967 C-120 and I used all STANDARD stainless steel hardware, even the E clips are standard. Good luck.

I hope to post some pic's soon.

Well, as you can tell, I won't be bringing my tractor to the show this year. Definitely next year!!! Progress has slowed and I am trying not to rush anything. I have just about all of the parts primed that I could fit in my blasting cabinet. A friend is going to strip and paint the major parts for me, such as the hood (which needs a little body work), the seat pan, foot rests, etc.. I will be painting the smaller items myself with Rustoleum Regal Red spray cans. I bought two quarts of Regal Red for the painting of the larger items by my friend the expert. I have been using Rustoleum Stainless Steel paint on some of the control rods and pins. Looks pretty nice. Hard to tell they have been painted. My goal is to have it in service before winter so I will be able to plow snow. Keep your fingers crossed!!!

looking good. looks like you've got quite a lot of it worked on already......

that price on the wheels is reasonable for powder coating.

Were you able to find stainless steel e-clips?

Sorry for the late reply, She's looking good, I remember the pile of rusty sheet metal, then geting it back with red primer from the sandblaster. Kind of gives ya a good feeling inside.

Got the e clip from Granger had to wate a few days, but wanted all stainless, makes her stand out. And down the road she won't have any rust streaks, cause I use her weekly. My neighbors chuckle when I give her a bath and chami her down.

Progress!!! :woohoo:  My primed parts have started to ripen! I built a spray booth and have started paint with Rustoleum Regal Red. So far I am pleased with the results. Any tips on painting are welcome. I am still waiting for a friend to paint the large parts for me. I am working slowly on the smaller parts and trying to make sure they are dry. Looks like I am going to have to take the tranny apart because I can't seem to get one of the seals installed without damaging it. Have bent two so far.  Anyone else have a problem with this? :confusion-helpsos:  I was wondering if there is some sort of burr on the casting.

Well, I have started the reassembly process. When installing the rear hubs, how far should they go on the shaft? I pushed them on till I could see the key from the outside of the hub. Is that correct? I will post some photos soon. I am still waiting for some of my stainless steel hardware to show up.

Finally, progress!!! Got my stainless steel hardware and have start the reassembly process. I'm still waiting for a couple of parts to come back from the paint shop. Had a slight problem painting some with Rustoleum spray cans and some with Rustoleum quarts. They don't match exactly, so I had some of the more major parts repainted by my paint guy. Hope it turns out so that it is not noticeable.

I have three reassembly questions:

  1. Are there supposed to be any type of washers between the frame and the clutch/brake pedals?
  2. Is there any type of washer between the frame and clutch rod pivot arm or on the opposite side where the cotter pin keeps the idler arm assembly in place?
  3. Is there a set amount of clearance between the transmission pulley and the transmission? Or should the pulley just be flush with the shaft?

Yes there are washers between the frame and clutch-brake pedals. 2 for the arm from what I'm aware of there are no washers. 3 the pulley should be flush with the shaft like it is in the picture

edit: there is a washer on both sides of the clutch shaft.

What type washers for the pedals? Nylon or steel? The diagram shows a spring washer on the outside of the pedal, but nothing on the inside.

On the clutch shaft the diagram shows a # 24, but no listing for it. I assumed it was a washer, but was not sure and did not know what type and it does not show one on the other side.

It's been six months, but I have a roller again!!! Just got the new tires mounted and filled with Rim Guard (beet juice). Still don't know if I will have it ready for snow or not, but I'm plugging along. Still need to paint the engine and seat back. Any tips for touching up the paint? Been trying to be careful, but still a few scratches from the reassembly.

Rusty

Mind me asking how and what they charge for rim guard? Do they replace the rubber valve stem with a steel stem?

Thanks
