Just picked this lil guy up for my wife and the pull start does not grab when pulled. Any pics of what parts are supposed to be there would be grateful

A few of the different recoils Kohler offered are covered in group 22-23 of this download...

and here's the Fairbanks Morse manual.

Here are some pictures of mine it is the same as yours and is currently for sale at the following link http://www.ebay.com/itm/301122684816?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

That is not usually the type that is used, usually it is the same as the one you see in my last picture, that is a 633 with the correct recoil.

Lane Ranger

The Kohler recoils are still around but a little pricey like all the older recoils.   You can find parts like the springs and  internal rope pulley's  etc.

They clean up nice and you can polish them to a shine which looks very nice on the tractor.

Kohler used the FM retractable starters until they built their own - which was apparently in 1962/1963. I have seen a few 633 models with FM starters and figure they're just earlier K141 engines.

This is from a Kohler parts manual:

recoilFM003.jpg

Note the presence & orientation of the sharp edge on the friction shoe plate. ("L" in the diagram)

Parts "E" through "J" must be in good condition and not oiled in order for the friction shoes to extend correctly.

Some of those parts are still out there, but you might have to do some digging. Check eBay, older Kohler dealers, etc. and they will turn up.

The recoil that is in my last picture and the one lane ranger uses the cup pictured below I don't think it will work with the fairbanks morse style in the first pictures.
