8 hsp Kohler Start Generator help

Is there a way to make an "anti-clockwise" starter/generator turn clockwise for an 8 hsp Kohler engine???  Please help. The horse is a Commando 8.  I was helping Jan van der Zwaan in the Netherlands with shipping for his starter generator (the parts house does not ship over seas).  :bow-blue:

Im not sure, but being a DC motor, cant you just change polarity?

Steve, you have to put different field coils in it to make it turn the other direction. Any starter repair shop could do that for you.

No, wish it was that easy. When I first got my '48 Ford it was 6 volt positive ground. I changed it over to 12 volt negative ground and the old 6 volt starter turned the old flat head over real fast but in the proper rotation.

Sounds like I may have a problem too with my 854.  I bought a new replacement S/G off a web site that had a specific listing for my series 301XXX 8 HP Kohler.  When I got the new S/G, it has label that says "anit-clockwise".  So, it sounds like this S/G won't work even though the cross reference shows it as being correct for my engine.  I haven't been able to get the S/G to work yet.  Any way to tell if it will work before hand?  Thanks!

That is what happened to us.  The paper work is correct, but the starter has the CCW tag.  Cub Cadet's Kohlers turn in the opposite direction from the Wheel Horse Kohlers...hence the CCW starter / generators.  WE ordered ours from Pat's Small Engine Plus in Minnesota.  Is that where you got yours from??  I suggest you call them and tell them what happened...they should be able to get you the right one.  Our problem is that they do not ship over seas.  They shipped it to me here in the states, and I shipped it to Jan in the Netherlands.  The cost of returning it is cost prohibitive...shipping was like $98.00.  We are looking at other options. :bow-blue:   Let us know what happens WheelHorse79.  Thanks

other options would be like i do, a family friend of ours regularly ships seacontainers full with tractors and stuff from the states to here(netherlands), almost all the small parts we order in the states get send to the guy that loads the container and all the small parts are just "thrown" in there.

Well, to add to my confusion, it all depends on what side of the "clock" you're looking at to determine clockwise and counter-clock wise.  I was looking at my 854 and figured that if the S/G rotated CCW, the starter pulley on the crank would rotate CCW as well.  However, if you go to the other side of the tractor where the output PTO shaft is, it will rotate clock wise.  I believe the drive belt running from the PTO shaft to the transmission input pulley needs to turn clockwise, to turn the rear wheels clockwise, so that the tractor moves forward.  Isn't my thinking correct?  If so, the the CCW rotation of the S/G would be correct.  Please let me know what you all think.

The direction of the starter / generator is determined by when you look at the pulley end of the starter.  The transmission pulley on your transmission is supposed to rotate counter clockwise as is the engine pulley when you look at them straight on.  Therefore, a CCW starter turns the engine the wrong way for a Wheel Horse Kohler.  It will not start and it will throw gas out the carb.  You need to have a clockwise starter.  Now if you could figure eight the fan belt... :eusa-think::bow-blue:

It's a shame the CCW S/Gen can't be mounted pulley end to PTO side and a Pulley on that side of the Crank, as it would turn the Engine the right way :roll:  :sad:

both kohler motors turn the same way Steve (cub/wheelhorse) one uses the pto side for starting and the other uses the flywheel side that why there's cw/ccw and the need for different SG's for both brands

Thanks for the replies everyone.  I ordered another S/G that turns CW.  Now, I have to return the wrong one I got from Pete's Small Engine.  It's a shame that their product cross reference is wrong.  Caveat Emptor.

Hmm...  I've yet to pull a S/G apart, but switching directions should just be a matter of reversing the wires feeding either the brushes or the field coil(s).  This must be dont inside the casing, as switching the polarity of the wires outside the unit will have no effect.

Hey there Steve and other supporters I had contact with Koen en will see if ordering a new s/g is an option.

At first I will try to reverse the S/G myself by reversing the wires, however.... the insides if both cw and ccw look exactly the same so I,m afraid It,s the inner piece that needs to be reversed or re winded.

If that,s so, I,m gonna take it to a s/g specialist here in Holland.
