sshell 8 #1 Posted August 5, 2008 Last year I picked up this A-90 SPECIAL at a yard sale for $10. I figured it was put together from lots of spare parts because nothing seemed to match to me. It had a 10 horse gen start Kohler on it that did not run and a 36" RD deck. I pulled the engine and looks like a rering is in order. Now my question is what is this Horse? So far what I have been able to find on the net shows a smaller vert shaft motered lawn tractor looking machine. The modle # is 243009 and the serial # is 1030108. Any ideals? Like I said it looked pieced together to me but will make a good tractor nonetheless.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,315 #2 Posted August 5, 2008 An A-90 Special is a 1974 lawn tractor. It came with a 8 hp Briggs and a Peerless gear drive transmission. I'm not that familiar with them, so I'm not sure what was cobbled up or not.
Buzz 502 #3 Posted August 5, 2008 It's a 1974, model # 2-4300. A yard, not garden, tractor. here's the specs. on it: Model # Serial Year Product Name 2-4300 None - None 1974 A-90 Special Tractor Model Number 2-4300 Model Year 1974 Product Name A-90 Special Tractor Product Brand Wheel Horse Product Series Lawn Tractor, A Series Engine/Motor Manufacturer Briggs & Stratton Engine/Motor Model # 109434-0638-01 Engine/Motor Size # 8 hp Engine/Motor Type 4 Cycle Engine Starter Electric Transmission Manufacturer Peerless Transmission Model # 1400 Transmission Speed 3 Speed Transmission Type Gear Sounds like someone changed a few things, still worth the $10 investment.
TT-(Moderator) 1,127 #4 Posted August 5, 2008 It actually looks correct to me....... It would have had a B&S 8hp engine that bolted to a rubber mounted plate. These were very similar to the 800 Special tractors of a year or two earlier. I'll see if I can drum up a picture.
sshell 8 #5 Posted August 5, 2008 Thanks Guys. I had no ideal it had a brigs in it from the factory. It is worth the investment to me for the k-241 it had in it. B)
TT-(Moderator) 1,127 #6 Posted August 5, 2008 Guess I was wrong about the hood: Hey BP.... you forgot to request the presence of this odd-ball at the 2009 WHCC show. Talk about using up leftover parts!
combatmp29r 27 #7 Posted August 5, 2008 The A-90 is a vertical shaft, the A-90 Special is a horizontal. I think the production department was around too many paint fumes the day they decided on the name B)
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,315 #8 Posted August 6, 2008 Joel, TT, I was thinking the A series were vertical shaft lawn tractors, at least the A-80 and A-90 were. But the picture had me believing this one was cobbled up pretty bad with the horizontal drive belt cover and the 22 or 23 inch rear tires. I would have never expected that an A-90 Special was a horizontal tractor. B)
chevelletown 37 #9 Posted August 6, 2008 Here is one I have. I'm the 3rd owner and everything seems to be original except for the headlights. Let me know if you have any questions or want other photos. It is an odd little fellow I agree with Joel on the paint fumes theory only maybe some leaked in to the design department too
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,315 #10 Posted August 6, 2008 Ken, That's a nice looking tractor. Do you have any other pictures of it?
barns1 57 #11 Posted September 29, 2014 (edited) We have one also. It came with an electric PTO clutch. Your right about the 22" rear tires. Bought it in 1985 from the original owner with manuals, dozer blade and 36" rear discharge deck. My wife loves mowing with her tractor every week. Changed a belt on the deck and one deck spindle other than the usual oil and grease that's it. It's been a good tractor, not heavy duty, but good.
