Exhaust Opinions!

Recommended Posts

Charlie Smith

Hello all.. Me again..lol just a quick question this time. :D... What exhausts do you think look better..., I know the stacks in the following photo wouldn't make it original.. But your opinions please...

This one. (Stacks)

Or the original,

Thanks

Charlie.

In this case both tractors look real nice with what they have on them, so its kinda hard to say....At least for me it is.

I've already got the original one fitted. And when the bonnet/hood is closed and the tractor is run for some length of time it's marks the paint work on the side of the grill... So I think I'm going to change to the stacks.

I like both, the bottom tractor is my sons, and it is very quite, but has a mellow deep tone, he only uses it at shows, and no days shows are cracking down on noise levels so we are keeping it, a good stack can be quite also but if you plan to use the tractor for work you have to watch you don't catch it on any thing.

Edit,,,,,, My sons tractor has been done for about 4 years and goes through a few tanks of gas at every show, driving it nonstop for hours, I have a couple others that have new paint, (sprayed with a gun and added hardener) none of them have ever caused a paint problem.

The biggest complaint I have read on stacks are the possibility of hitting a low branch or other obstacle and the stress factor.  Then there are purists who like the stock design.  Personally I like a modified exhaust or stack if it is in correct proportion to the tractor.

I like both, stacks are noisier and sometimes that's good... esp if you are ploughing and making the engine work :D

It's not going to be used for work. Just used a few hours every year at shows. So.. I'm not looking for better performance or anything. I just thought stacks with rain caps on the top look pretty neat.

that's my dads Norlett. Built in the Oevel factory in Belgium in the early 70's.  Engine in that is a 1943 J.A.P. 288cc.

Basically an A-90 special....

Which was a Briggs 8hp mated to a peerless 4 speed.

Me, I like a good stack.. But a normal exhaust does help getting around trees when grass cutting.

Yes I guess, but I don't think mine will do much cutting where trees are... Just open fields. And does your 6x6 have stacks...?

It does indeed. I don't think it would look right without one..

Straight pipe stacks are loud and obnoxiuos but with a muffler in line its not much louder than the stock muffler. Go for a stack!

Looks great either way. On the tractor that runs for a long time at public events I would be careful with a stack. Some kid or old man might reach up and grab it. Just for a second however.

My cheap-o walmart U1 battery is starting to bite the dust again (barely able to crank it over fully charged, and ozzing everywhere) after 3 years on my 68' Raider and I am looking into a new battery for winter as I now have a plow setup. I was thinking of either getting the original 22NF battery that came with it or running a mazda mita battery which is a U1 size. Is the AGM worth the extra money over the 22nF even in the smaller size? I think the vibrations keep killing the cheapo batteries and I am trying to make sure I can leave it out in the cold and not have a problem starting in the winter. It does get down to 0F or below zero every once in a while. I don't think I want to go all the way to a 22nF AGM as it is $200.

      Thoughts?

I am picking away at the k series on the raider10. Basically the Piston blew through at the ring grooves as it appears the rings may have had too large a gap. I can feel a slight erosion of the bore where the ring gaps All lined up, but not even close to catching a finger nail.
I am hoping just hoping out the bore will get it back to round close enough that a ring job will do .
In any case I can measure the bore and report back. Discipline demands that I do not tear this engine down right now as too many things are taking up my time.
Just hoping the gurus can offer a bit of guidance

Just recently had a 10 pinion differential axle gears lose their teeth as shown in this picture from a post in 2014.
Was wondering if others have had this happen and if they determined the root cause and corrective actions.
I am considering replacing the two axle gears and five pinions that were destroyed but did not want the same thing to happen again.
I assume the failure was due to a worn cylindrical spring that I also plan to replace.

Been looking at a lot or Raiders and Chargers lately and was wondering if they all have LSD? I know most of them did but I was wondering if some of the later models might have had the Uni drives instead ?

      Thanks, Robbie.
