Wanted!!! Detailed pics of 55 rj35

Recommended Posts

Jake Kuhn

Hey Guys,I just purchased a 55 rj 35 and need to figure out how a couple of things go back together on it. Most of it is together but there are a few things off of it. I also would like to know the belt lengths. Sorry I do not have any pics of the tractor yet but hopefully will get some up soon. Thanks Jake

I got my pictures to upload overnight. Here are pictures of the tractor and everything I have for it

Came with a k90

102_0507.jpg

and k91

102_0508.jpg

here is the complete tractor,I just stuck a running k91 I had sitting on the shelf on it so we can mess with the tractor and have a running engine(when I redo it I will rebuild the k90 for it)

102_0509.jpg

stuck the lever on there, hopefully I did it right

102_0510.jpg

102_0513.jpg

same with this pulley, the pulley is not on all the way in the picture but goes all the way on

102_0514.jpg

belt guard

102_0515.jpg

don't know if this rod is ever original to the tractor, have no idea where it would go,and does not match the paint

102_0518.jpg

schnake recoil

102_0519.jpg

has a brake band but the brake kit has been taken off of it

102_0520.jpg

The rod appears to be from a LMR-30 reel mower, particularly if it is painted orange. I would be interested in buying the rod if you don't mind parting with it. That is the one part missing from my reel mower!!!!

I'm sure there will be a discussion to follow, but due to the fabricated frame, (vs. channel iron) your RJ could have been built in 1956. Some will claim that frame was only used in 1956, but I was told it was possibly late '55 to early '56 ~ and only for a short period of time.

I won't argue either way - based on the fact that the only two people who would know for sure are no longer with us. :confusion-shrug:

Definitely a good start. It reminds me of the one I have upstairs. :handgestures-thumbup:

the brake band does not go with the tractor the bk35 brake kit is very differechnt you also will need the drive pulley for the engine with the reversing disc unless it's on the other motor ( not seen in pic,s)

the original motor that came with your the tractor is a K91 not a K90 unless someone changed the head also will need the drive hex nut for the schnacke recoil

great tractor Jake looks like your off too a good start

As Steve stated I sold Jake the 55 it has been On my shelf sitting since I brought it home from Des Moines, IA. 4 years ago I took a hosing on the tractor and I just dont have time time for it. Some of the things he has shown in the pictures I did not see when I bought it site unseen :( I adjusted the price and Jake gave way less than I paid for it and I am glad he got it. Its a Solid start for sure it came with a K-91 bolted on the frame and I gave jake a K-90 I got seperate for it. Brian he has the right pully but I gotta fess up......I did canabalize the brake parts off of this tractor when I restored my 56.That brank band was on my 56 with a linkage rod to the lift lever, As far as the LMR rod it was laying there in a parts pile and the LMR is long since gone :eusa-whistle: So Jake can use it for a coat hanger... :ychain: It really makes me happy that Jake got this tractor and Im sure he will do It proud.

Jake and his dad Doug are good people I look fwd to their next trip Ill send em home with more rusty Ole Iron! It was great meeting you both! And MJ wants a bushel of blueberries fer her baked goods Ill take a 100 bushel for my blueberry juice! :thumbs2:

Jake,

The hitch is for not a 55 as it has the tab welded on top to center it. You will need a sprung washer behind the variable drive pulley. Looks like the rith side rear hub should be on the left side as it had the end ridge milled off which was used for the brake kit. There is a stop tab on the right side to stop the varable lever which from what I understand was not on the 55 model. Overall looks very good. Now you can restore a "real" tractor lol. No more green !!

So this is a early 56 rj?

There's a very good possibility, but after the frame-mounted gas tank stand went away, they get a little "blurry".

There wasn't a definitive break in the design of these tractors from one calendar year to the next, and it appears that most changes were made "on the fly".

This is the first RJ-35 I drug home:

misc070.jpg

It has the fabricated frame, no name on the grille, and the small iron steering wheel. I have no idea exactly when it was built, but I'm pretty sure it was between '55 and '57. :ychain:

What are the belt lengths for my tractor and where can I get a spring that will work on it? Thanks Jake

One more question... some of the rj35's have the cast iron steering wheel on them. Is mine supposed to have it or did only some of them have it? Thanks Jake

The first 100 or so had an aluminum one then cast iron from there until the end of 1956. Again, the exact transition between variations is hard to tell so you could find a 1957 with a cast wheel.

Oh,

Belt lengths I believe are 37" for the trans to vari pulley and 20" for the engine to vari pulley. Correct me if I'm wrong someone....

trans to vari drive pulley belt lenght depends on whether you have a 6" , 6.5" , 7" dia. pulley

there is a thread about this if you can find it

The RJ58 was the big hit for spectators this year at my local festivals here in Carroll County OH.
the children loved getting their pictures sitting on it, then they discovered the bicycle horn under the steering wheel. It’s always a joy even in parades. Just love showing off part of my collection every year and hearing all the stories from those that had WH in their lives at one time. Can hardly wait to get to retirement so I can get some of my other models back to their glory in working order and be able to attend other shows/festivals throughout the year. My fellow tractor enthusiasts always know when a spectacular starts asking about WH, they point in my direction. I study up on the history of the different models and always intrigue those that didn’t know much about how WH came to be. This website is one place that has helped me learn so much about the WH history and I thank you for sharing your knowledge that I am able to pass on to keep WH alive and well.

Wheel Horse RJ-58 with RMR-32 deck and a slot hitch cultivator for sale. I got this cleaned up, motor swapped from a giant old 3hp Briggs (got rid of the spacers the previous owner had under the hood) and rebuilt the mower deck with new bearings, bearing blocks and gear covers, found two sets of NOS blade tips, mowed the yard five or six times and it's ready to go to a new home. Found that the model/serial were hand-stamped on the frame alongside the tag. Weld-repaired some cracks on the RMR-32 and the slot hitch. I don't have the room or time to do a proper restoration. As it sits, it's a solid mowing machine that's ready to work for another 50 years.

      The good:
Great running Predator 212cc, trimmed airbox and routed exhaust to work with hood
Cleaned gas tank and new gas line/filter
      New shifter boot
      New belts
      Fresh grease in all fittings
Flushed and fresh gear lube in transmission
      New bearings in RMR-32 spindles
New bearing blocks for RMR-32 driveshaft
Solid deck, very few if any rust spots
NOS hi-lift blade tips less than a season old
Additional set of NOS hi-lift blade tips
      Smooth-shifting transmission
      Original BFGoodrich/Firestone tires
Tag/serial number still attached to frame
Cultivator has been freed up and adjusts properly

      The not good:
      Weld-repaired front wheels
Rear tire inner sidewalls starting to peel
Hood has a few extra holes cut in
      No belt guards
Right rear hub had a bolt driven into the key slot and stripped the threads - I removed it and cleaned up the keyslot, added another threaded hole and put a set screw and fresh key in. The hub has been shimmed on the shaft with brass stock to take up some slack left by the old bolt and shaft wallowing it out slightly.
