Got a C160 Automatic today, have questions.

I got a C160 automatic today. I already own a C101 8 speed. The first thing I noticed when driving each one is the C101 seems faster, and seems to not bog down as much up a steep hill. I bought the C160 for more power and speed but now I am regretting my purchase as it feels the C101 drives "stronger".

I also noticed how much smoother my C101 is compared to the 160. I know the rubber motor mounts are the reason. Questions is can I upgrade the 160 to the same set up for a smoother operation?

Thanks for any answers anyone can give me.

Thanks!

i happen to own both of those models,my 160 will sound like its working harder going up hills but it is not so much that you notice it much, and my hydro is about the same speed as the 8 speed,i know because my neices race each other on them,my 312 goes faster than both them,

Upgrade what? To a rubber mounted motor? If so I think you need to change the oil pan but I'm not 100% on that. Maybe the tranny needs a fluid swap and a new filter before you condemn it :eusa-think: .

Are the 8 speeds typically more powerful than the hydro because of the gearing? Would an 8 speed 160 push more snow than an automatic?

The C-160 auto will push until you lose traction. I will say while there is potential for more to go wrong with the hydro version (because there is a lot more parts to the) system, it is just as strong.

Don't know how fast a C-101 is, but A later race was the 416-H vs C-160 Auto. The C-160 does go faster than the 416. Neither my C160 or 416 seem to work very hard and BOTH are more powerful than my 414-8

I agree with Sparky. Check the tranny fluid and filter and lever adjustment.

So I had a stupid plastic funnel that I used to do oil changes that had a tube connected to the funnel part, I guess so the funnel could swivel, a slight angle to fit different areas.

well, when I was taking the funnel off after doing my oil change on my C101, the tube part popped off and fell in the crankcase. Of course can’t see anything through that hole, tried for a while fishing it with a coat hanger, but no sign of it at all.

perhaps I’ll be lucky and it just sits somewhere in the crankcase without touching any moving parts.

When I start my engine it will die once i change the throttle from idle to full throttle and when I switch the cold start throttle to what ever down is. It will just die every time

A HUGE thank you to Tony @Docwheelhorse for settin' me up here.

The generosity of some of our members never ceases to amaze me.

This here is another 1974 C160, but with the rare Tecumseh HH/OH160 OHV engine. Made one year only.

It's rough. Very much in need of a full disassembly and restoration.

When it came here it was missing one tie rod and the other was broken off one end.
Today I popped used tie rods on and Trina used her 867 to drag it from the drive to the shed.

      The engine wouldn't move.
Tin was near chock full of skeletal mouseseses and their house.
Cleaned that out and the engine spins freely now.

      So progress has been made.

It'll be a good long while before we get to this one but I just couldn't turn it down considering the rarity.

      Hello,

I am hoping someone can help my. I recently acquired a c160 for the engine for another tractor. So I did a motor swap and wanted to see what the hydro was like. I put a plow on it C-160 (which now has a 12hp engine on it). I did a quick test run and everything was good. I drained the fluid and change the filter (Napa 1410 filter and sae 30 transmission fluid as it stated to only use this fluid on the tractor.) everything was working great after the fluid change. I plowed two driveways and the sidewalks near my house... all the sudden the tractor would not go forwards or in reverse. I tried to pick the plow up and nothing... I checked my drive belt it was turning like it should. I started to push the tractor and the rear was engaged so it would not move. Of course I was 400’ from my driveway and the plow was down which made it fun. I put the tractor in forward and started to push it and the thing took off. So I hopped on and took it to the front of the garage. I put it in revers and it cut out again so I pushed it in the garage. Today I went out to check the tow valve. I took it out and cleaned the threads up put it back in and it did not change anything. According to the dipstick I have the proper amount of fluid in it. I did have a drip that I fixed on the cylinder still nothing... does anyone out there have any tips to help me out? I’ve never had a transmission like this only manual transmissions. The model of this transmission is the sundstrand 90-1140.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi folks, picked this up not to far from home this morning.  Seller had mentioned it needed some carb tweaking, it would idle up, but then not idle down when ya moved the lever back, kinda raced......I thought maybe it just needed a govenor adjustment, but feared it might be an internal govenor problem.  Lucky me, as it turned out, the linkage was just kinda wonky, and needed the be persuaded with a pair pliers to allow free movement without getting hung up on itself!! Idles up and down great now, runs like a kitten too!!!  Came with the 42 inch deck, plow, some extra blades and pieces parts, and manuals.  Fella was asking 400$ for all of it, I end up getting it for 300$.  He was very nice and seemed glad it was going to someone that would appreciate it.  Anywho,  just Sharing.
