Steve is right - hitting your brakes when you're getting tailgated isn't a wise idea. If you're in a multiple lane highway, the safe and proper thing to do when someone's tailgating you is to get out of the way. If it's the left lane, most states have laws that prohibit driving in the left lane (or passing lanes) unless you're passing another vehicle. It's the most annoying thing to have someone drive in the left (fast or passing) lane(s) and just vegetate there. You can get a ticket if the patrolman is so inclined if you're occupying the passing lane when not passing another vehicle just as much as he can give a ticket to someone who tailgates. I wish they would write tickets more for both. :banghead:

If the big rigs had mufflers the jake brakes would not be loud :banghead: {Why don't the cops enforce the noise laws } the Inspection stations also should enforce the noise laws :USA:

Speaking of tailgaiting... It is illegal in Ky. for a truck to follow within 200 feet of another truck. How often do you see that much room between them in a line of trucks? For cars the distance required is defined as "reasonably safe". Kinda open to interpretation aint it? Since it is also illegal to change lanes within 100 feet of another vehicle in the lane being entered, how can one legally change lanes to get out of the way of a tailgaiter or get to an exit ramp when the trucks are less than a car length apart?

I don't want to sound like I'm slamming the truckers, I have had a lot of them do me HUGE favors over the years in blocking lanes at accident scenes, offering to help with beligerent drivers, etc. I've even had them work together as a group to spread out and block a vehicle during pursuits.

I really don't like the folks that will drive 5 mph below the limit in the center lane when there are three lanes going in the same direction. That forces even more drivers to clog the left lane.

But I guess one of my all time favorites are the drivers? who will pull up to within a foot or so of you at a stop light. If they get bumped they are also going to bump you. And if an emergency vehicle needs through no one can get out of the way.

thats a conspericy TT thats so you have to buy 8 packs of hot dogs and 10 packs of buns to end up with a matching number

I always thought it was because they knew you would burn or at least drop one on the ground while grilling them. And the other one is for the dog (She doesn't need a bun.) BUT! Fischers packing company in Louisville packs jumbo hot dogs eight to a pack!

Couple of reasons I can think of having retired from a cop shop......

Lots of cops are sympathetic to the truckers as decent guys (99% of them are, fellas) trying to make a living, and using their jake brakes both for safety and economy. Like Jim, I've been helped out by a ton of these guys (and ladies) over the years.

Even if the cops encounter a trucker who's a real jerk who hits the jake just to show off in the middle of town in front of a church on a Sunday, try to find a judge in this society who'll do anything about it. But that opens up another whole can of worms......

As to the inspection stations, depends on the station and the rig being inspected. Really subjective process up our way. I don't know of any shops around here who have (or often have even heard of) a decibel meter.

My pet peeves in this life? People who mistreat or don't take proper care of their animals, overpaid athletes who set a bad example for our kids, and liars of any kind. :banghead:

OK, I've spouted off enough!

Rod, This is not meant to be sarcastic but.....There's your answer.

And one from my patroling days, The parents of the budding criminal who, when you take them home (Because the courts rarely want juveniles to be incarcerated .) and begin to tell them that after a high speed pursuit that ended in a wreck that sent others to the hospital in serious condition, you just caught little Johnny fleeing a burglary in a stolen car and had to run him down on foot and fight the 17 1/2 year old, 220 lb high school football star and found drugs both on and in him, waist no time demanding to know why you are picking on their son instead of going after the real criminals. :banghead:

And on a more serious note, Why are scissors sold in pakaging that has to be cut open? :imstupid:

:banghead: a little clairfication, i don't stomp on the brakes i just lite up the lights, i would hate to see a lot of cars going crazy behind me, i usually drive the speed limit but there is always someone going over, since we have some law officials on our forum, what do you-all say when every one is going over the speed limit, the one driving the speed limit is holding back traffic, do we speed up to go with the flow, i like to keep my space safe and always plan ahead.

How about "Union Yes" on a Nissan or Toyota? People who do not put their shopping carts in the proper places at Walmart? Or people who park in handicap parking spaces who aren't handicapped? I could probably think of more, but.... :hide:

Of the 4 manufacturers who have cars in NASCAR only the Toyota model

is American made being the Camry. The Big 3 models represented in

NASCAR are built in Mexico and Canada!! The Camry is built in

Tennessee. :D

Eh, I dont know of a toyota Plant in tennessee... There are however Plants that build Camrys in Georgetown Kentucky, and Over north of Indy on I65 (the Subaru Plant) Toyota cut a deal with them a year or so Ago, Subaru plant is producing half Subarus and half..toyota Camrys. Georgetown couldnt keep up with the sales, they were working 4 hrs Overtime EVERY day running 600-650 cars a shift, and couldnt meet production requirements.. YIKES!!

I'll bite my tounge on the big truck comments made above -

I can't speak for the rest of the guys in the business, but when I was on the road (retired and in private security now) I usually gave folks the benefit of a few mph over the limit, especially when the weather was clear, roads dry and traffic was moving along pretty well. :D

What I would be looking for was the idiot who was cutting in and out of lanes (including the break-down lane) to pass everything in sight, or was yacking or not paying attention to his/her driving. :hide:

Even if I was parked running radar I'd set the alert for (xxx) mph over the limit and would watch those who tripped the alert to see what was going on before I went after them. More often than not I'd just flash the blues at them and they'd get the idea. :omg:

I actually did stop a few folks for driving below the posted minimum, mainly to be sure they or their vehicle was OK. I never ticketed any of 'em, and escorted a few off the highway so they didn't get tail-ended.

Like everything else in this life, common sense should be the guide, and safety is what we, or at least I, tried to focus on - certainly not quotas (we never had them, even informally) or being macho because I had a badge and a fast car with lights on it. Oh yeah, I hated (and still do!) doughnuts! :D

around here drivers are terrible to slow down to see a fender bender, even if its on the other side of the interstate...also probably my biggest one is why police use the shoulder of the interstate to pull someone over...this causes major traffic backup issues...why not just follow them to the next exit or pull over area,,,that should be the law..might save a few lives also!

Just my 2 cents!

And give them time to eat or otherwise dispose of their drugs, alcohol, formulate a plan of attacking the officer, give them more time to get nervous enough to try fleeing, (Which endangers EVERYONE!), etc.? :hide:

Officers don't always get to choose where an ofender pulls over. Most officers try to make their stops in as safe a location as possible. And there is also the deterent factor of having all the other drivers seeing the police working the interstate. And trust me, I don't know any officers who like walking up to an offender's vehicle, and all the unknowns in that vehicle,(Such as, Is he doing 90 mph because he's late, or because he just killed someone and is trying to get away?) along the shoulder of the interstate knowing that at any second another vehicle could run them down. The public could do everyone a huge favor if they would actually pull a safe distance OFF the travelled portion of the road when they are stopped by the police.

My pet peeve is people who focus too much on their pet peeves... just kidding. Like it or not, we all have them, and we have to admit that in one way or another, we are just as guilty about something, as the person who is peeving us...

That being said, I think my top pet peeve is the person merging into interstate trafffic, with a yield sign, who cuts you off to get over. If I can move over and let them in, I will, but if I can't, I DO have the right of way...

we have had several officers killed here in are state working a simple traffic ticket and someone not paying attention ram the cars on the shoulder. Maybe going to the next exit isnt the best ideal, but something needs to change, it is not safe,,,There is no way I would do that job...I had rather them have time to eat the drugs rather than see the officer or the people pulled over at a funeral

i understand your point but around here even if the person being stopped pulls well off the road its common for the officer to have his car parked 1/3 into the traffic lane,i assume to move people over more as they go by.now that is on local surface streets.running tractor trailers over the road i have seen way to many cops pull people over in construction areas or other bottle necked areas as if they had no concern about it at all.i came thru a bad accident seen on I70 in IL several years ago as they were cleaning it up that has stuck in my mind since and probably always will.a DOT cop pulled over a big truck in construction, while the officer had the truck driver in the DOT wagon parked directly behind the truck another big truck lost control as he dropped off the high unfinished blacktop berm by accident couldnt get it back over on the blacktop fast enough, rearended the wagon shoving it up under the trailers icc bumper and killed both the officer and driver.the other truck ended up in the medium and burned to the ground.i unstand the need to get someone pulled over fast once the need arises but it needs to be done as safely as possible.i have saw several, inccidents and near incidents like this over the years most were not as tragic.it does give you thought, and a better awareness for safety on the road.as for the jake brakes,i will only say the open piped harleys are still louder and thats just rediculious.we sold our fatboy 3-4 years ago and may eventually get another harley but its pipes will be within reason.
