Just another thought on the axle... could you fab up your own? I'm guessing the front end won't see the abuse that would require the cast axle.... what about a custom bent steel tube. RJ style with a bend? A twisted axle would look cool too! You know like twisted forks on a chopper?

How about a transverse-mounted leaf spring (maybe from a snowmobile ski) and a custom fabbed dropped tubular front axle with radius rods or a wishbone set up ?

Nahhhhh....... I only have 3 months, not 3 years! :P:D:D

(it sure would be  though!)

Chapter 1, Page 3....

Hopefully the pictures will speak for themselves. My hands are still numb from grinding and sawing.

See what you think of todays progress.... That's a 551 Suburban axle hanging under the front end now.

5 hours of fun-filled fabrication and one can of Krylon Ultra-Flat Black paint later:

It was just one of those rare days when I could take two steps forward, and NOT stumble backwards three.

I have a lot of work ahead of me yet, but at least the initial  effort is looking convincing. :D

Hmm, I think Jason is onto a good name "Dark Horse". It's starting to take shape nicely. The 551 front axle did get the front end down a bit. It's a  looking  .

Chapter 2, Page 1 ......

The "black tractor" recieved some more alterations today.

A pair of 1968 "running board" footrests were installed along with the corresponding rear mount. A heavily modified 1977 C-120 8 speed drive belt guard replaced the 753 guard that I had tried trial fitted other day, and the small engine pulley was changed to a newer 4" Commando 8 pulley. I also had to remove the shifter, straighten out the OEM bend, and bend it in two new locations so it would clear. I am also using a 60's PTO pedal for a foot throttle, and due to limited space on the left side of the engine, I now plan on installing a "full-fledged" hand clutch (and brake) lever. :D (That may change as the fabrication progresses. )

Here's a new pic:

I LIKE that head on shot! Probably not in the budget (I know it wouldn't be in mine), but I'm willing to wager that Firestone, Goodyear, Hoosier or Bruce make some skins for the midget racer crowd that would look bitchin' on that critter.

Thanks for the update.
