WHX?? 56,820 #2 Posted 10 hours ago ello, I found an ad for a C160 with hydraulic lift, rototiller, plow, cast iron wheel weights, and a broken engine. - How can I be sure its transmission is reliable? (Broken engine!!) - Where should I look to ensure I have the best version of the Sunstrand transmission? - Is there a version with an external brake? - Which is the better transmission: Eaton 11 or Sunstrand? Durability, power, repairability? - Is the 518 H with Eaton 11 and hydraulic lift better than the C160 in terms of transmission? Thank you for your reply. Sincerely, Gilou
pfrederi 20,644 #3 Posted 9 hours ago C-160 all came with Piston to piston Sunstrands with only an internal parking brake. (external brakes appeared in 1978 I believe). I like Suntrands but most would say the Eaton 1100 series is better...also newer. You could try to run a belt from the hydro to a running tractor parked behind it you have to put a twist in the belt to reverse direction. But all that will show is does it work at all. No way to load test the tranny. Putting an Eaton into a C-160 will be a project as the motion control mechanisms are very different.
oliver2-44 11,513 #4 Posted 8 hours ago (edited) I'll add, the Sundstrand is probable slightly more repairable than an Eaton 11. Both are tough, but the Eaton 11 probable a little more. The 518H would have an Eaton 7 that is not designed for ground engaging equipment and no filter. I have a C-160, old hour mete said 4xx hours but no longer worked so unsure of hours. Sundstrand oil was really black and had an old redish Wheel horse brand filter. So oil hadn't been changed in a long time. i changed oil, ran it a few hours and changed it again. I've now changed it a 3rd time 2 years and 100 hours later. Oil stays clean now, works great. Ii have currently have a rear seal slightly and plan to open it up to replace axle bearings as part of replacing seals. Jay @JPWH and his son James tested a couple of Eaton 1100s and posted the process. Post # 6988 of page 280 is the second one.

ineedanother 2,486 #8 Posted 5 hours ago My opinion would be (1) that it was parked due to engine failure and not Sundstrand failure, although either one might point to poor maintenance overall, and (2) Sundstrands are able to be repaired in many cases. I would be very tempted to roll the dice if the overall condition of the machine and implements look solid.

Only the domestic (US) 518-H had the smaller Eaton 700 transmissions and manual lift.
