This may also shrink the inside a little. So they could need to have a fine cut or ream on the inside.
UNBOUND 73 #53 Posted June 8 Dont have torch for brazing, wouldnt work on this application as the seal sits right on top of bushing. Would have to have a shop do the knurl and at last I checked $70 an hour minimum. Went with the loctite and is holding very well. Did a google search on it and is widely used for my situation.
stevasaurus 23,274 #54 Posted June 8 Do the axles still fit in those bearings??
UNBOUND 73 #55 Posted June 8 Yes, tighter than the old ones. There is still a minimal amount of movement from axle wear.
stevasaurus 23,274 #56 Posted June 8 You are going to want that movement, in fact, do not be surprised if you need to hone the bearing a bit once you get it together. The differential does not always align the axles straight and a little honing creats a better fit that works. I had to do that with the 3 p[iece trannies...you may not have to with a 2 piece. I recommend using Lucus Oil Treament to coat shafts and bearings when you put this together. Lucus is a lot like STP and will hang on to the gears and bearings. You do not need to go crazy with this, it is just to lubericate while assembelimg the trans.

squonk 43,714 #61 Posted June 13 $120? EGADS!! I don't think my friend would charge me even $30 for that! Ask them/him "How much without and invoice" As in under the table coffee money

UNBOUND 73 #64 Posted June 13 I have one of those welders from HF. I welded a patch in my truck frame, wasnt pretty. I got in touch with a friend that welds for a living, and has welded for me before. Said $20.He is good and cheap, plus owes me a favor or two which helps. 2
UNBOUND 73 #65 Posted June 14 Got the gears welded today and diff put back together. Waiting for the trans gasket to get here. The vender I ordered it from was showing several in stock but couldnt locate them. Ordered from another vender, but will be a few days.
stevasaurus 23,274 #66 Posted June 15 Do you have any picks to show us??
UNBOUND 73 #67 Posted June 15 I didnt take pics of the welds, but were good. The diff is sitting in trans waiting for gasket so I can put other half of trans on. When I turn one axle the other goes in opposite direction.

stevasaurus 23,274 #69 Posted June 20 WOW!! I wasn't sure we could save this one as easily as we (you) did. There is some great information in this thread on this particular transaxle. Excellent work there @UNBOUND, you should have another 60+ years to enjoy that horse. It was a pleasure working with you...this is what it is all about!! UNBOUND 73 #71 Posted June 20 It moves in every gear and no odd noises. I would like to thank all of those who participated in helping me get her going . Stevasaurus for finding me the gears I needed and all his wisdom.
UNBOUND 73 #72 Posted June 21 Just for reference, Wheel Horse made a kit to get rid of the welded gears. P/N 7168. The hubs are probably common as well as the gears but the axles maybe not.
