20 ton Harbor freight press upgrade

I'm gonna go ahead and file this under, why didn't I think of that.....??

 

 

I was looking at mine just the other day as a means for getting a hub off of a transmission axle while it was all still assembled. Never even occurred to me to slicey dicey and rebolt...

 

I still don't think it would have fit anyways but I was mulling over picking a couple pieces of maybe 3" I-beam or 2" Square super heavy duty tubing or something to use as substitute cross beams.

Also used the press to remove the rear pin. I put the transmission on a engine stand, tuned to the side, removed cross bar  pushed in to press, got a long piece of pipe (bigger around than the rear pin) put it on down side of case, used a small pin and pressed it out.

I'm not sure I'm in love with that idea.

 

I admit that press is really narrow, but I don't know how I'd feel about cutting that beam and bolting it together. I've had mine maxed a few times.

I can see your logic there. 

In principle I'd agree....

 

But these presses are .... well.... cheaply made. 

 

I'd almost feel better if there was a couple USA made Gr8 bolts with correct washers and locking nuts than trust the original tiny welds on the cross beam connector.

A fear I have with modifying a tool is once changed you become the owner of any injury that occurs.  If someone else uses your modified tool and is injured you could be facing serious liability.

Howsabout cutting the crossbars flush to the inside of the front beam and welding heavy tubular bosses on the front to engage the original posts - like the way a muffler and tailpipe fit together. ?? Then bolted together.

Overbending it may? could difficulty in removal... 

 

OR - just whip up a copy to modify...??

I did the same as Jim @WHX??, cut the cross web on one end and it has allowed me to do several hubs and steering wheels.

All the load is on the C beams, not the spacers/bolts. If you twist the beams that much, You are going to need a bigger press.
