What does the K341S mean on the Kohler…

I was wondering balance gears or not…

Awesome grab!  That will be a fun one to put back to work!  K341s is the engine model.  You’ll need that for any parts, manuals, etc.

Yes my C160 had balance gears.  I have a C161 I bought with a disintegrated piston/scored cylinder. A balance gear was the cause.  
 

Great looking tractor, I love my C160.

Absolutely. They are easily removed. Just a bleeping heavy engine to set off the frame to get them.

The things you need to do are minor given the good overall condition of that mosheeen.

Yeah. That powerplant is some heavy. 125, 130 lbs or so.  

 

YYYEEESSS I'd remove them after seeing how my own were just recently.  

I'll be doing a "balance gears delete" on all mine as they're rebuilt in the coming months and years.  

 

I found it was fairly easy with the right tools to drive the gear pins right through the block then back in (to plug the hole)...

 

Add some ground wires.   

 

Run down through the New to you list. 

 

I'll be lookin' forward to this !!

On Kohler K models the number represents cubic inches and cylinders. K341 = 34 C.I. one cylinder.

:text-coolphotos:            Nice find, guess you released all the magic smoke and need some wires.

The "S" tells you your engine came with an electric starter.

Click on this link and then on page 2 you will find your Spec. number. Follow that line across the page and it will show a code number for each group of parts and the ones that have your code number (in this case 2 for the crankshaft) will show that your engine left the factory with ballance gears.

Yes you need to re-wire that tractor. Very few Big block Kohlers did not have balance gears. 

 

I have the very same garage stool with the same replacement casters because the originals kept falling off! :lol:

I'm glad that I sent you the link for the FB Marketplace add yesterday morning. Now you have your C-160 and I have learned about the balance gears. I had not heard of these until I started following your thread. I guess I need to open my engine and have a look see.

Folks here's a still picture I got from the video of My Local Paint Department while she was spraying the K341 for me.  

 

Excellent color contrast because she had just a dusting of white over the metal and red colors.

I chose to lay the engine down and drive those pins right straight through to the interior of the block.

The reason I chose to push them straight through instead of trying to remove or break the interior gear is that to me it seemed like it was just easier.

 

 

If this engine was on a stand and empty and I was going to have it cleaned I probably would have threaded that section and put a couple of pipe plugs in there or maybe even just used freeze plugs and indented the outside of the block with a cold chisel. Kind of like you would do for a camshaft on the old Chevy small blocks.

Likely that would hold just fine because those things had oil pressure to push against and these don't.

Just drive the top pin out. The lower pin's clip is easy to remove with snap ring pliers.

Agreed. Now that I have the right snap ring pliers.

The ones I had on hand the day I did that were fairly close to useless for those rugged rings that are inside that engine. That's why I drove them both right out.
