Brake cleaning

My 312-8 has a very oily brake band.  Is there a way to clean it?

Are you fixing the source of the oil leak?

 

 

There are those that would clean the band with large amounts of brake clean and degreaser.  

I've done it with mixed results. 

 

The last few years I've come to the conclusion that once a brake shoe is oily... It's bad.

First you need to find where the oil is coming from and fix it. Then soak the brake band in a mixture of water and Dawn dishwashing liquid for a couple of hours. Scrub with a stiff brittle brush or wire brush. Rinse, and then dry with a hair dryer or put in your wifes oven at about 200 degrees. If that doesn't fix it, there is a vendor on here who sells excellent brake linings.

@wallfish does it have to be ethanol free or can I just use regular pump gas ?  😂😂😂

I would prefer to purchase a new brake lining.  Who is the vendor?  If you cannot post it on this page then can you send me a private message.

 

The brake shaft seal is leaking and I am in the process of replacing the seal.

EB - I agree.  The brakes are original from 1987 and a replacement is in order.

Gasoline easily dissolves the oil out of them but the old brake lining material isn't near as good as the new "rubber type" like Bob sells. The new stuff has much better friction properties.

The older ones I burn off with a small heat wrench. They seem to be made of some kind of knit material. Once it gets hot enough the oil wicks out like an kerosene  lamp wick and burns off.

No issues with the lining coming off so far. Betting the older ones were made of asbestos? 

Doubt if this would work on Bob's linings.  

My go to for your linings is Gorilla glue Bob.

Problem that I see with Gorilla glue is that it expands as it cures unless it is clamped tightly from one end to the other.

Yes it does ooze out ... use sparingly. I do I clamp it around a spare brake drum.

               But don't put it in the oven after washing it with gas as @wallfish does.           

Seriously, Bob's brake lining work so much better than the one that came on my 310-8 that I changed it even though there were no problems with the old one.

As a matter of fact, I season all of my cast iron in the oven while my wife is away. She goes to lunch one day a week with neighbor ladies. That's a window from 11:30 am until 4:00 pm. I've also cured paint in the same oven, but that really stinks.
