I agree with that particular point. 

My other concern is damaging the actual transmission case itself.  

Odds? Actual need of braces?

Well I dunno but likely pretty low.  

I'm just thinking where I'll be pushing a larger than designed plow (60" wide and twice the weight of the 42") I'd  buck up on the bracing too.

I got some great research work done.

You wanted me to take pics if I tried free hand cutting an axle groove. 

Did some experimentation today on that. 

I struggled for quite a while trying to figure out how to make a straight line on the axle shaft with the tools I have.

Never really did figure that out...

 

One of the things I was going to try is making a row of holes with the drill press and then touching the bottoms with an end Mill bit. Following that, connect the drill holes with the Dremel.

I tried using my old full size stand up drill press to start holes.

I kind of figured it would be next to impossible on a round surface.

Tiny drill bit. Total failure.

Larger drill bit, partial failure.

I put in a 3/8 drill bit even though I was only going to make a quarter inch groove figuring I could at least start the pattern.

That might have eventually been partially successful but the drill press I have just completely lacks accuracy.

The end Mill bit was beginning to cut and I think with the right drill press could be used with extreme caution.

That was not the answer....

 

 

 

A few weeks ago I had tried using a 4" angle grinder to cut a groove. I can see the principle but I'm just not steady enough anymore to be able to do that accurately.

 

I am however quite well steady enough to handle a Dremel.

A few days ago I picked up an assortment of cutting tools for a Dremel and today commenced to trying them out. Slow but sure, that was the way for me to do it.

 

I successfully FREE HAND cut two practice grooves in the bad axle shaft I have.


 

I started by hand laying a piece of tape on the axle shaft to use as a sight line. 

I used  a 1/16" thick cutting wheel to make a groove the full 2". 

Next I put a 1/4" wide groove at the end of the shaft (the width of the key stock.)

From there all I did is basically just keep grinding away and trying for fit all the way up through.

 

Time consuming? Yes. But a helluva lot shorter than the TWO MONTHS I was going to have to wait for a machine shop to do it.  And .. I spent about $15 or so on tools compared to a quote of $200+/--. 

 

Successful? Also yes.

They aren't exactly machine shop quality but I think they'll do just fine.

 

The quarter inch key stock is able to bite all the way through the hub now.

I got a atlas lathe given to me, needs some tlc but price was right. 

Messing around and looks like I can cut keyways with it. Need some scrape axles to practice on, but should work well

I have several. At least half dozen. Things I've removed and things I got in a big parts pile a few years ago.

I'd be more than happy to send them to you and let you practice on them.

I'd be happy to either reimburse you for the work or let you keep a few for your own stock.

I have at least four of them that I need back. For my own stuff or Trina's. Certainly will be more after that.

This morning I used a 90⁰ steel pick to scrape the paint out of the area around the threads of the relief valve. 

Dripped a little Liquid Wrench Penetrating oil in there and walked away. 

Checked on it and sprayed it again 4 or 5 more times throughout the day.  

I was happy to see every time that there was less oil than I'd left. 

This evening I had Trina hold the pump assembly so I could work the valve back n forth... and eventually out.

I got it cleaned up and tried this 7/16 nut on it.

Might JB Weld that on there. 

 

 

In other news...

The transmission is now bolted to the frame.

I finally got around to getting the oil pan cleaned up and bolted it on.

Very interesting to see how different the color of the oil pan is to the engine block.  

Just from cleaning.

As you can see here the points cover was an orange one and not very solid.

I took the cover off the maroon engine, cleaned it up and set it aside for this engine.  

The points gap on this engine was at .010!  A bit off.  

I've never had to remove or even adjust points yet. 

The ones in place were aged a fair amount so off they went.  

I put the points in place....

I found a post by @pacer from the archives of many moons past.

Turns out I was letting the screw too loose (like me) 😃.  

The points wouldn't hold adjustment.  

 

All set now. They're around  .18 or .19.

Me an' the wire brush wheel, some chisels, scraping tools, etc... had some good quality time today.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

 

The gasket mount surfaces on the side of the engine block are cleaned up.

Breather and its parts/layers are all cleaned as well. Also the cam cover and points cover.

After several turns of the engine, 

Ignition points are verified at .020.  

Exhaust valve clearance was way too tight at .012. 

Adjusted that.  

 

Valve clearance verified at:

Intake. .008

Exhaust. .018

 

Today I learned:

How to adjust points.

I was thinking about that when putting this and some other things on.  

Almost a breath freeing feeling.

I got one of those Harbor Fright mini crane hoist thingys still in the box. I plan to make it work like Don's @Lee1977 did on his tractor. It's pictured below.

 

I'm also thinking of adding a 2 inch reciever on my welding table so I can use it to lift things up onto it. I made the table nice and tall without thinking how bleeping heavy some of the stuff I work on is getting. I'm not old or anything, it's just I now believe that climate change has affected gravity... :rolleyes:

That crane is gets heavy putting it in a 2" receiver.
