Tearing into the C-160 Transmission.

Now for the bad news. The bad bearing was totally exploded and damaged the shaft and other parts.

 

I had to cut the cage out by grinding almost through the full length about 20 degrees apart then I took my chainsaw file and ground it to a point on one side almost hollow ground from the circumfrance of the grinding wheel. Then I tapped it behind the cage between the two thin spots that I made to colapse the cage.

 

It also looked like the previous owner may have been changing gears on the fly. Look how the ends of the gears teeth are worn but not all smooth. Should we just knock the small burs off with a file and use them.

On the plus side you'll be able to locate replacement parts. Likely A to Z Tractor in PA. 

 

Far as the gears.... Well... If it was mine... I'd file a bit and runnitt. 

 

Obviously you're already aware of stopping before every gear shift.

We refaced the chewed end of the differential after this picture.

I show where the bearing is at on the shaft with the red arrows. If we measure that diameter then get my dad to run down it in his lathe so that no scaring exceeds that diameter will this be usable or do I need to get another shaft? See to the right of my picture is the axle that Steve used in the video that he did. I don't see where the bearing rides on his but the rest looks almost the same. I'm going to take it by my dad's and let him take any high areas off with his lathe as Steve did with the grinder.

We spotted a couple chips on the pinion gears. They still OK to use though?

In the video Steve showed how it goes back together with the eight pinion gears dimpled ends opposing every other gear. We noticed that some ends without the dimple had X and XX on them. Does it matter where they are placed. X on one end and XX on the other maybe?

Also to let people know what happened to the axle when the hub was beat on the back by the previous owner trying to get the hub off. The splines are hitting the snap ring and mushrooming. I had to file each side of each spline to get it back to normal shape that could slide through the axle gear.

I hope not also. I had to file the top and both sides with a tiny file. The not hard steel causes the problem but also makes the filing easier.  But if you never have to break this apart it won't matter.

The snap ring needs to be a snug fit. Give Lincoln at A-Z a call on that axle, it sounds like the correct one.

That axle would be OK if it is not messed up where the outer bearing sits.  You need to check that.  The end plate of the differential sits in the large ball bearing and that looks OK.  You could lightly file all the gears (removing burrs) including those pinions and should be OK.  I just mow grass and move snow with mine...I would go with what you have, but, I would be on the look out for parts or another transmission for the shelf.  If you get parts for it now, I would save the old ones just incase.  

   If you want another axle...all 1 1/8" axles will work...you need the right length.  Measure the axle and that's the one you want.

I just got off the phone with Stevasaurus; what a friendly and helpful guy. We determined that my c-160 has 105875 axles regardless of what my parts manual shows. So I know what to get. I have my parts shopping list and will be ordering my parts.

Yes he is. 

I measured my axles and they are definitely 11 5/8" x 1 1/8" with 17 splines. Which is a 105875 rather than a 102764 (that my parts manual shows.) by the info on A to Z Tractor. I guess my transaxle may have been changed to the shorter or originally the shorter shaft.

It's possible your transmission may have been changed. PO's do some ... Interesting... things.

Got all my parts ordered! I'm glad that those axles turned out to be 105875's I couldn't find 102764's.

I drive truck out of Portland Maine. Monday through Friday I'm up around 4:00, 4:15 a.m. . Weekends and days off sometimes I sleep in all the way till 6:00 or 6:30.

We thought that we would replace the thrust washers while we had it apart. The two thrust washers (part #'s 7418 and 9547) are on back order for 60 to 90 days from RCPW.com. 

Anyone know of another source? Or have some that I could replace when these arrive?
