Hatchet handle repair

Recommended Posts

Pullstart

I’m more of a Hone Depot guy, but I’ve had this Kobalt (Lowe’s) hatchet for the better part of 15 years or so.  I generally touch up the edge on a cinder block or rock wherever I’m working.  Occasionally, it’ll get a file.  I’m no @formariz but I get stuff done.  Today, I decided to take back my barn from a bit of nature.  There are trees and grapevines growing too close and I decided to clean ‘em up a little.  The handle here had some funky epoxy capping it off and after all these years, the head was a tad loose.  I ran the head up and down a bit (3/8” travel maybe?) by hand and blew out all the loose stuff.  Then, I filled the cap with “Sticky A$s Glue” kind of like Gorilla Glue and taped it off.  I then set it in the press and forced the handle down until glue came through and gaps between the handle and head.  The glue is expanding and making a terrible mess, but there’s a belt grinder for that.

Not a traditional way of doing it but as long as it works it’s good. 👍

Allis Chalmers “C” or “WC”, I believe.  It’s my brother in-law’s.  He won’t come get it and won’t give it to me…. So it sits here.

When I saw "Hatchet", "repair" and "Pullstart" in the topic, I figured this was another "Bumps & Bruises" story...

Good work, Kevin.

Back to the discussion on topic…

The glue continues to expand, about 2.5 hrs later.  I’ll keep the pressure on the handle until it is done changing.

Sorry to let you down Dino!

I decided it might be a good time to scrape some excess glue and tape from the head.

Patience, Steve. That will come... particularly if the glue on that hatchet handle doesn't hold...

Is that piece of wood now glued to your hatchet Kevin?

the blue tape was surrounding the hatchet head originally… but if it is stuck, I have a saw for that.

@oldlineman if only I had used a little more blue tape in my setup…

The hatchet came right off the block, the block was lightly glued to the steel “anvil”.

I cleaned up some excess with a wire wheel and the belt sander, and now it’s time to try it out.

I’m not sure if it was stubbornness, or the eager beaver attitude of the hatchet, but the tree is down!

You can see that I’ve cut this tree down once before.  I’ll have to keep after new growth and maybe get some stump killer if it takes off again.

Judging from the amount of smack lines in that wood... you should sharpen the blade on that hatchet... :teasing-poke:

You need to get a Sawzall with a pruning blade, makes quick work of that kind of stuff.

No need for stump killer, just pour about a cup full of gasoline on it.
