Good morning to all those who enjoy wheel horse tractor and working them , but latley my mind been just laying low on these long snowy winter nights in Minnesota but the other day a truck drove by I really got my mind going again it was a lifted 93 Dodge diesel dually with a big ass plow on the front , and so I said I'm going to make my c195 a dually and extend my plow blade my question is why don't we see more Dually garden tractors plowing snow?

Just found out Howard had a heart attack a few days ago. They put in a few stents and he seems to be doing fine. About all I know for now. Keep him in your thoughts.....

The pounds per square inch with dual tires will be half. I doubt you will gain much, and it may be much worse.

I think of HHHOOOWWWAAARRRDDD!!! every time I get on the 857 I bought from him. And this winter it's been a lot. From one stent holder to another: Here's to my little Buddy!

Well we all know now where Dick's heart lies! Either tractor would do just fine Ritchie. Tom's @Shynongot a boss 953 or 1054 I CRS but he plowed abit with it and did well. no pics.... maybe 'Jack or Dan @Achto does? Eventually I will have one of my 953's ready to plow just a matter of having the project time, getting two 953's to function as one ain't exactly a weekend project but certainly up on the project list. Hydraulics are a plus for us old farts with bad shoulders BTW fellas my plow day is tentatively set for 10/19/19 but that's up in the air as of this writing. I have yet to officially put in on the RS calendar. Everthing is going to hinge on the harvest.... growers getting their beans/corn off. Who knows what the fall is going to be like. One thing fer sure with what we did last year people were impressed we plowed what we did with a single bottom. Weather be damned we can honestly say we plowed in snow! I have also been approached by a vintage tractor club about some advertising in their newsletter and a monetary donation. Still on the fence about that till we have a high level meeting with those who help me put this gig on. Your excused Ritchie due to (1) Distance (2) Maybe not having a tractor ready (3) Being beaver whipped (4)

Back when there were dedicated snow plow trucks like Walters and FWD with big V Plows and wing plows on each side they were all singles. Also look at dedicated airport snow machines they also are usually singles.

does that come with a HEATED DRIVERS SEAT ? only asking !, ha ha, Pete

Yup.... It's a Tauralift T144 .... 4wd, rear wheel steer.... Boom telescopes .. not a huge lifting capacity, but a neat little machine complete with heat and stereo 😎

Thanks for the update Jay. Howard has become such a fixture around here, glad to hear he is on the mend.

Every weekend so far in 2019 I've hauled home a Horse. Turning out to be a great year so far. Last weekend I snagged this poor tractor that someone has added custom features to. Believe it is a 702 that someone cut the tank and hood. Plus installed a Briggs and Stratton motor. Well have been wanting to put a 520-H forward swept axle on a round hood. So...since someone else started butchering the poor girl, figured it would be a good candidate for the axle project. Little adjustments and it was on. Added the wide rear rims and tires also. Next step is to possibly put the gear reduction steering on it. Still need to switch the seat out. But happy how it looks so far
  16. 3 points
If you liquid filled both pairs of tires and ran chains on both pair I think it would be a snow monster. Without the added weight it would be a bit of a disappointment. It would look awesome! You have great fabrication skills!
  17. 3 points
Here are Sears 55 lb wheel weights that I put on both a 702 and a 416-8. If the rims are shallow, the weights may stick out a bit. If the rims are deeper, then the weights will still fit, but you will need longer bolts. Either way, they will fit. BTW, the 702 has narrow 6 in width rims and my 416-8 has 8.5 inch width rims. A 520 should have 10.5 inch wide rims, so longer bolts will be needed.

Weights for 12 " Garden Tractor wheels are usually interchangeable. Welcome to Red Square

Correct answer. One has only to look to Rally Racing to see what change they do to their cars when racing on snow. They switch to sometimes ridiculously looking skinny tires. The much smaller area of contact drastically increases downward pressure on a smaller area therefor increasing traction. A wider tire essentially will function like a sled.

Looks like a hybrid between a 702, and 604, and a 520. That's what happens when you keep male and female Horses together in the same barn. But I still like it.

My snow rig at work Wednesday.... Little more comfortable than my 416, but it would be better with a plow instead of a bucket..... Not complaining..... Waaaay better than a shovel any day 😁

Good to hear Howard is doing fine, they put a couple stents in me at the beginning of December. I've been back at work just over a month now. Most likely everyone is different, but I was in an out in a couple of days, seemed like no big deal when caught early enough. Good luck Howard, do what they tell ya, and you'll do well.

Multiple replies, again. First off - I ordered a switch & harness that should be here toward the end of next week. That'll give Eric - I looked at your "cinnamon horse" . That's good work! Lookin' good! On that plow I've got - after posting about it I looked at the details, attachment PDF and I think it's actually a grader blade because it does measure 40" and that's the only 40" attachment listed. Makes sense as this tractor is originally from FL. Ain't no snow there. HaHa! Thanks for the other tips. I'd love to eventually completely restore this thing - we'll see. Thank you! Thanks, Garry! After reading your posts about part numbers this morning and searching online for the correct ignition switch - I took off my old one and lo & behold it had the 103990 part# on it. I sure feel like I came to the right place, thanks to Garry, because you folks ROCK! Getting me all excited and confident that with ya'll's help I can do this. I've participated in helping people on various other types of forums so I know & appreciate what you folks do.Thank you, all! Have a good one!

You know I like Big Wheels Richard! One of dad’s 953 YouTube plowing videos has gone viral and has over a million hits... It is definitely a fun tractor to use. It really comes down to what you prefer to build. High clearance skinny tires seem to do a good job, it does take a little more work to set the plow for the height of the rear hitch. I could see Richie building a drop hitch if the need presented itself

With the correct rods and user it does well...

One thing that hasn't been pointed out. Wider blade means more weight to push adding even more stress and power /traction needed to move.

That depends on what manufacturer it came from. Valvoline ATF Transmission Fluid Dextron Mercron III Be the first to review this product Valvoline Dextron Mercron III automatic transmission fluid is the recommended fluid to use in most of Indmar's transmissions. Use this ATF fluid in ZF Hurth,Velvet Drive, and Ski Vee V-drives where ATF is called

Mr. Biggs, if you want to be different, and make up a dually set up for your c195 , that is your choice. but the work and expense will show little gain, from the much lighter weight " footprint " your c195 will make on the ground, to the added stress on the axel flanges and bearings . I have been plowing snow for 40 + years and my horse , with single 850 x23x12 tires and good single link chains really gets it done. having said that ,I would like to see what your results are with this set up, and I wish you luck with it. love the model t getting after the snow, great stuff ! pete

But, still - even the better Tuff Torq uses only 1" axles, a weak design along with the aluminum case. That keeps it in the lawn mower class in my opinion and should never be used in a GT class application. There are other iron rear cases, both in hydro and gear drive options that can be adapted. A buddy swapped out his Tuff Torq for a Noma built cast iron rear axle unit with 1-1/8" axles and a gear drive to handle the heavier work. But, in reality, the unibody design of the Deere won't be able to handle much without a lot of reinforcement. His was also the LA175, which at best can only handle lawn mowing duties if you want it to last. A local guy here in town has replaced the Tuff Torq in his twice now, just due to using a snowblower on it and weights. No offense, but for the cost of that entire series of Deere tractors - you could easily rebuild an older and much heavier GT that will still mow the lawn, but also very easily do heavy, ground-engaging work and outlast these newer, cheaply built boat anchors. Actually, they aren't even good as a boat anchor - they are too light. To be clear - I also have an LA series here that I inherited from Dad when he died. Since it was his, I've kept it and do mow with it occasionally. It does have some benefits with the foot operated hydro control, but otherwise is basically worthless. This one is the even lighter LA145, when that hydro trans dies the thing will be parted out - just like so many thousands of others. Consumers just don't seem to get it or think the lower price is somehow better - buying a quality made machine that will last is a better investment. They want cheap, easy and quick - these throwaway units last about as long as expected. They die easily due to cheap parts, made quickly and as easily as possible. Don't get me wrong - there are very high-quality options out there but they also come with a price tag to match what a mid-level brand new car used to cost. You get what you pay for, lol. Sarge

Now that's cool! Same way in the mud!!??

First off it is DEXRON no "T" (pet peeve of mine sorry) Sundstrand built the same hydro with slight mounting variations for several garden tractor manufactures. JD CUB. etc. I looked at the fluid and filter recommendations from them and they were all over the map. From proprietary like JD20 to motor oil to ATF even Tractor hydraulic fluid like HyTran. Keep it clean don't mix and whatever you use will work just fine. My Charger Electros all run ATF and have for 50 years no issues from that. The D200 has 10w-30 for 44 years

Richie—that is a good question. It is really hard to argue against the original Big Wheel tractors: gear driven, hydraulic lift, high clearance, classic big tractor stance. However, the local circle here in WI all plow with conventional “small wheel” tractors and they work great. Caleb’s JackRabbit really impressed me as well and that is a hydrostatic machine as you well know. Honestly, I don’t think you could go wrong with either machine. The key is to purpose build it for plowing. Doesn’t mean it CAN’T be used for another purpose but that should be its primary purpose. When you look at Dan’s Raider, Tom’s “the Machine”, or my GhostRider, they are all set up as Plow mules. They are setup and ready to go plowing at a moments notice. It will be fun to watch and see what you decide. You will definitely have to start a thread...”building a plow mule!”

We do have that manual and it is likely the first tractor service manual they ever published. Turns out it covers most years and models is some respects because the same design and parts were used. Here is one on the 103990 ignition switch. Click on the picture Here is a link to one of many online Toro dealers for your model. The parts that are still available from any Toro dealer are priced. https://www.partstree.com/parts/toro/mowers-lawn-garden-tractor/61-16ks01-c-160-toro-c-160-automatic-tractor-1976/ Garry

Thanks Steve....it is a cobbled up mess so who knows what it actually started as. This is the first Wheel Horse that I have actually customized. Not one to do any customizing as I like the original look. But, as mentioned, it is already a Frankenstein.

Mike your ol' man made a top shelf choice there. In any group of things there are some that are more capable or desirable than others. Many of the folks on this site and the rest of the tractor world will tell you that the C-160 is both. It's a bucket-list tractor for most. It's reliable, easy to repair and maintain. I'm just about to finish up a full restomod on mine. It's a combination of 1974 and 1977 tractors. Search bar "cinnamon horse". If that plow is from the same vintage as your tractor it should be a 42". If it hasn't already been done you'll likely want to get the rear tires fluid filled to help with traction. Try as hard as you can to find and stick to using NON ethanol gas. The more you use the C-160 the more things you'll find you like about it. Same goes for Wheelhorse as a brand. Oh yeah..... Horses are well known to be a herd animal. You may as well start clearing a little more shed/garage/barn space for your new herd.

The snow thrower is spinning freely. Not really planning on using it to much. I have plans for it to go on one of my other rounds hoods. I have a couple of 701's here one has a deck. Other would look good with the snow thrower.

Believe it or not Jim, this plow is a Florida native. It was sold at Thrailkill Bike and Mower in Orlando. I have my dad’s C-120 that also was sold at the same dealer. He got it from the original owners which were friends of his. I have the bill of sale somewhere. (I hope)

As our first Grandson was being encouraged to say Grandma, he kept saying umma instead. A few years later we learned he had a slight speech problem that prevented him from making the hard gr sound. The problem was eventually completely corrected with some professional coaching. But the name Umma and Umpa stuck for my wife and I. To this day, our four Grandsons, two Sons, two Daughter in laws, and all our immediate family call us Umma and Umpa. The funny part is, one day a stranger heard my family address me as Umpa, and asked me if I was from Germany. I learned the German name for Grandma and Grandpa is Oma and Opa. So, that new Grandbaby may decide what your new names will be.

I've gotten to put the C-161 with the 22hp predator to work a few times this year so far. I might have all the bugs worked out at this point haha. This pic was from yesterday. Just got done clearing up the snow and ice we got the day before and overnight.
