Well I bit off a big bite of 2019 already. Couldn’t let @Aldon have all the fun. Went out and traded in the 2011 on a 2018 F150 4x4. Wanted a V8 for towing stuff to NC when we move and something that could drag a little more of a load. So I stepped up. Love this thing already. Have to find out how to deactivate the auto start/stop. I’m already on it.👍

Swapped out the old headlights in the 520H loader tractor for some LEDs. Here’s a before and after picture in my garage with the garage lights off completely. The before shot is actually darker than it shows because my camera tried to compensate for how dark the room actually was. The tractor still doesn’t light up the world but it’s much better than it was before. The wall is about 30’ away from the tractor.

Yes they are. They are 2" 10 watt LED lamps mounted together with a small tab that comes with them. Just search 2" LED spot lamp Sorry to put my mug in there but here is how they look. That was my first test drive after getting it together. Still have some small tweaks to do on her. The lights work great but you have to watch your legs or they get in the way of the light. @PeacemakerJack can vouch for how well they work.

best way to make the covers last is cover the top with the std flat tarps I have a 12x20 that put two 12x16 silver tarps on top(12 foot length ways will give over lap in middle) then change the flat tarps every 2/3 years have had my original cover for ten years now by doing this Brian

Another update, been back to work for a couple days now (2 10hr days) my left shoulder is still sore not full range of motion, the shot and Rx definitely helped with poison Ivy but the the oral meds caused me to have severe indigestion/heartburn for last couple nights and days not much sleep but I do have a 3 day weekend before I start all over again, thanks for checking in on me, the old adage when rains it pours is playing for me now but all will be better sooner than later, Jeff.

As KC said, making a new wiring harness is your best bet. If you will provide the model number (found on a tag on the dash tower) of your C-120 we can give you the owner manual and wiring diagram. The C-120 was made from 1974 to 1977 and there were changes made in the ignition systems during that run. We will help you along with doing the job and it isn't as hard as it may seem.

Several years ago Oliver2-44 (Jim) replied to ebinmaine (Eric) in a post that a needle scaler would remove large rust scale for some project Eric was working on (when is Eric NOT working on a project, eh?). I have seen needle scalers used in welding shops to remove slag on non-critical welds. They don't do a bad job on heavy 7018 slag if you can handle the tiny indentations they can make. Being a tool guy and currently working to clean and paint the underside of the mower deck on my White GT1855, I started thinking about how to work smarter and not harder. Yesterday, I was looking through the most recent catalog from Harbor Fright and admiring their attempts to confuse me on their prices and prod me into parting with a few hard earned shekels. I saw two sizes of needle scalers and being just slightly less thrifty than my aforementioned friend in Maine, I decided to buy the less expensive of the two. With a 20% off coupon in hand I was able to bring the small HF needle scaler home for $25.43. They also gave me a free LED light to wear on my forehead when I have to go out in the dark to retrieve firewood. Nice folks at HF. Below is a representative video of the needle scaler doing what it does best. My attorney told me that I need to tell everyone that you must wear eye and ear protection when watching this video and be sure to read and understand the owners manual that comes with this tool. Also, be prepared to share the needle scaler if your neighbor comes home from work and sees you using it. He has a few mower decks that need cleaned up, too. Enjoy. Cheers and Happy New Year! Early models used the K-Series of engines with battery ignition. Later models used the M-Series of engines with magneto ignition. Some have a voltage regulator and some do not. These amount to changes in the wiring but nothing that can't be made work. Transmissions will interchange but axle diameters and number of differential pinions may be different. Garry Should add The last 312-8's used a Kohler Command engine with a similar magneto ignition.

On Wednesday last I laid my Mother to rest after her bringing joy to many lives for 88 years. The Thursday before my wife's Dr. at Cleveland clinic told her that she may be in stage four of her auto-imune disease that is destroying her liver. We go back to Cleveland tomorrow, Thursday, for a biopsy to confirm her condition. If it is confirmed, she will need a liver or will have roughly six months. Right now I am just staying in prayer along with many others. Yesterday I received an unexpected package in the mail that contained a Wheel horse tee shirt. A member on here sent it as a thank you but it is more than that. It lifted our spirits and turned our thoughts to planning for shows and outtings together. A small gift with a huge impact. To that member I say from our hearts, Bless You. In one of the posts on here members write about what gets them excited. I think that we all can say that finding that one piece that completes a project or finally gets it running tops that list. I make it a point to go to the wanted section and see if there is something that I have or can direct a member to in order to reach that point. Not a lot of effort but it can make a huge impact. I have seen this many times on this site and that speaks for the caliber of the people that's on here. Bless You All.

I picked this up a few weeks ago as you all know. I have not touched it since. Even though we got some snow last night, it was a decent day here at almost 40 degrees. Got myself a battery as the old one was a tiny atv battery and no good. Also made some new cables to match the battery. Ignore the red negative cable as that's all they had in stock. I'll put some black heat shrink on it later but it works for now. I also made that battery hold down clamp as the stock one was missing. Replaced the muffler too as it was full of holes. Engine runs pretty well although it is down on power and smokes pretty good. Ill either replace it with a 16hp or rebuild this one and maybe add a cam and a long rod setup. We will see what happens but it runs for now so it will allow me to work on the trans. As for the trans as you can see it goes forward ok. Seems to have good power going forward. Was unable to really test it as the ground is covered in snow. Reverse...that's another issue. Reverse is pretty gutless and does not work very well. I cannot tell how much oil is in the trans as its really hard to see on the dipstick, but there is oil in it and and it will drip off the bottom so I know there is at least dipstick level in it. The hydro lift works OK so I don't think I have serious issues. I'll probably start by draining the trans, replace filter and fill with new ATF. 1971 Wheel Horse GT14

Yep. I've done four or five complete tractor rewires in a couple years now. I've always been mechanically inclined but never messed with any garden tractors. With the help of the people on this site and the schematics and some information on what items to purchase, it was actually pretty easy to do.

Make sure of what your tranny fluid is when you drain it. If its oil, it will have a brownish or honey colored tint to it. If it hasn't been changed for a very long time, it could be darker in color. If its ATF, it will have a reddish tint to it. Its critical you replace the fluid with what was in the tranny. Do not mix fluids! Removing the notched rear seat frame fixture will allow you better access to fill and check fluid levels during your servicing. Be sure you get a hydraulic filter and not a motor filter. Hydraulic filters have a higher micron filtering rate than a motor filter. I use a NAPA 1410 hydraulic filter. My first year 1969, Model # 1774 GT 14 (now 50 years old), uses 1 gallon of ATF, Type A. Yours should take the same volume unless you have additional hydraulic devices in your system. From watching the video, the back up speed doesn't appear to be as bad as you described. A dirty filter and low tranny fluid levels can have a big impact on the reverse function, at least in my experience. Also you might want to remove the control lever cover and see if your hydraulic control valve is leaking when the fluid level is correct. I had a progressively worse leaking control valve that was losing big amounts of fluid and affecting overall tractor hydraulic functions. Let us know if the servicing makes a difference in hydraulic performance.

@TimC121 Unless you find a donor parts tractor, I doubt you can find a complete wiring harness. I have made a couple of "new" harnesses. I used the correct gauge and color wire, (according to the manual) bought new Delphi Packard 56 connectors and built my own. It isn't that difficult if you have a wiring diagram to work from.

Surprisingly, they actually plow snow very well. So light weight and just a 4hp too.

Mike is correct on the wider rims they will work but look goofy. He is spot on about the Firestones and is the only thing I would put on a beast of a C160 dang the cost. Miller tire is the only place you can get them and they are quite proud of them. In fact darn near the only place you can get a 16/6.50-8 tire these days is Miller. http://www.millertire.com/products/lawn-garden-tires/16x6-50-8/16x6-50-8-firestone-3-rib-front-4-ply/ I got these used for a little less than Miller from a fellow member. they are mounted on standard rims and look a little balloonish but not bad. I do have the Dees on my regular plow rig just like Dan's above with good results.

Just checked in on your topic's and see the Stevasaurs made Moderator , I have not met Steve in person but his video on transmissions saved me when I rebuilt my 1054's transmission , now I just need correct tranny oil ! Seriously , I have had the pleasure in speaking with Steve on the phone ….I think he is Dr. Stevasaurus !!!

What you've described....works ok for a couple hours, then has to cool down again.... is indicative of internal wear of precision machined parts. Specifically, the PISTON SLIPPERS, thrust washer, and gerotor set that I referred to earlier in this post. When these parts are scored, the warmed up (hot) oil will bypass thru the scoring marks resulting in loss of pressure which causes lessened or poor power performance. You can change oil and filter till the cows come home, but the only solution is to rebuild the Hyd PUMP / Hydrogear unit. Download the aforementioned Sundstrand manual to do this. It is not difficult to rebuild / refurbish these units, just take your time and be meticulous in keeping finished parts clean before reassembly.

I think if I bring home any more red, the back of my head will be the same color. I have one more parts machine coming and then I am done dragging home stuff for a while. Already have enough to play with and no time to do it. 👍

The wiring on the 310 is a bit less involved than a 312 and some changes were made from year to year there are few differences.

Steve doesn’t need to answer all that himself, I’ll help free of charge. something about worth it for 1000 miles... yadda yadda... YES! It’s worth it! I am about 1150 round trip, and most likely the Mrs. and I will end up driving separate. Still worth it!

I did put these in there but I got the idea from looking at some of the larger farm tractors that had headlights in the fender fronts. I though “I could do that” so I tried it. Came out pretty good I think. Pain in the butt to mount them. Had to cut the front out and build a mount. Like this👍

Steve, you and I have never met before but always enjoy your posts. You do seem like an Interesting character and it may be worth the 1000 mile round I trip to the BS just to meet you in person. Have two questions, now that you are a moderator will the pictures of you on a stick be avaiable on the RS store and is that really just spring water in that nice stainless steel mug with the WH logo on it ? Congrats and good luck in your new capacity. Jim.

For bigger stuff... I use old disc brake rotors (free at most any service station) one on each end of the tank, washing soda and an old battery chargerf. She sits on a movers dolly so I can move it about as it is a bit heavy

When I added new axle bearings to my 312-8, I found a lot of rust on the top inside of the transmission. I scraped the loose part off. It might be better to use more then 2 quarts of diesel to clean the transmission, but I would not fill it completely full. This is the only picture I took when I had it apart. As you can see It doesn't show as I took the picture from the top.

When I changed the chain on the snowblower, I used the old chain for the tires. More than enough for both tires.

Here is a simplified wiring diagram that may help you understand where your wires should be going. As you can see the charging system is a stand alone system and is not dependent on the ignition system. Some of the components live in the same neighborhood but only interact at the key switch.

Following along in the interest of cool science... Thank you to those who are taking the time to do these tests and Also the ones putting the thought processes through. It's fascinating to see and we really could put an LS diff to work here on a regular basis. I only have one 10 pinion transmission but several 8s and 4s so a positive final result would be a huge help to us.

Intake valve right within specs of 8 to 10 thousands and exhaust was at 13 and should of been between 18 and 20. With carb off I’m not seeing hardly any carbon in the intake. I sized them both correctly and milled down the head to take the warp out of it. got it all back together ready to start it until I busted a small wire off under regulator and decided to call it quits till tomorrow evening. I didn’t end up taking the valves out because I have no lapping compound so see you she runs tomorrow evening. Damn I just can’t get enough enjoyment from these tough old bastards! 😎. When I’m not working on them or with them I’m fulfilling my time on red square learning something more everyday

https://www.surpluscenter.com/Hydraulics/Hydraulic-Hose-and-Hose-Assemblies/Hydraulic-Hose-Assemblies/ If they're NPT or JIC fittings. But... they're straight so need to buy the extra fittings for using 90s and such

Yes. They do look similar. But. The space between the 2 plates needs to be 3/8" of an inch wide. The class 15s I picked up are too narrow for the winding arm. pfrederi. Thanks for that info. It is an MW signature. I can't find any other names on it. I am going back to JoAnn fabrics tomorrow. Maybe it is some sort of Singer knock off or something. I won't lie. This is testing my manliness 😟😵🤕.

Since this is a recoil start engine I wanted to fill in some of the empty space where the battery used to sit on this Ranger so I cut the battery tray down a little and welded up some 1/8" flat to make a tool box out of it. It's not very big but I think the boys will like it. I'll put a small latch on it and maybe add a small handle if I run across something that fits the dimensions.... I've also taken my seat pan to have cushions made and the guy tells me it'll be mid February before I get it back.
