17 pointsI belong to several online forums, and I've always said that RedSquare is and will always be the best. We have hands down the friendliest and most helpful member base of any site on the web. I just happened to look and realize this is post #1,000 for me. I know I've got a long way to go to catch up with some of you fellas, but 1,000 posts on an internet forum is quite the accomplishment for me, some of these other forums I've belonged to for years and lucky to have posted 100 times, much less 1,000. Most places are pretty topic specific, here we share the common Wheel Horse thread, but we also seem to share more than that, like one big extended family. This is the only forum I belong to where we all pull together for each other through the ups and downs life throws at us, and one I am very proud to be a member of. Thanks to each and every one of you who contribute in your own special way to make this the great place that it is

14 pointsAnother tough little work horse in the shed. I ran the old girl for 12 hours straight after the Nov blizzard here in central IL.

10 pointsMy Honey and I are working on the cinnamon horse for a bit and the dog decided to join us and get comfortable.

10 pointsGot this sign, not sure what my kids are implying... and a sweatshirt to match my girls’ t shirts!

8 pointsI slip a heavy flat washer over the shaft then use a pvc pipe. The washer will bottom out on the case assuring the seal is perfectly flush.
-
7 pointsI realize this is not what Eric is asking, but want to comment on something I found helpful when installing new seals. I destroyed several new seals when putting my 5073 back together... Keep in mind there were no shafts in the holes, just empty cases. What I found that made a HUGE difference was chamfering the lip of the case. The factory edges on the case are completely square. Once the edges were chamfered, the seals slid in with no problem. I used a machinists deburring tool. You can buy them for as less than 10 bucks, and I promise you will find a hundred other uses for it! Danny

6 pointsI was searching through old videos and pictures this am and came across this one with my 1967 Wheel Horse Lawn Ranger and the 30 inch snowblower I have installed on it (still have it and it still runs and works great). We had a big snow that I used the snowblower in and I enjoy the way the 6 HP Tecumseh motor works in cold weather with this snowblower. It does not shoot the snow 25 feet or more but it does fine and I don't have to shovel! 100_7605.MOV

6 pointsStart by filing down any burrs on the axle, key ways... might even apply a piece tape over the key way to protect that new seal.
-
6 pointsI use the drive hub itself.I make sure that it is clean and install it backwards.Works for me.

5 pointsDon't feel bad I have the same problem, when I was finishing the two walls I've gotten done and building my workbench I spent more time looking for that stupid pencil than anything. I bought 5 new carpenters pencils when I started that project, and danged if I didn't go through every one of them before it was done

5 pointsHere’s one for ya! It’s my little girl Lucy, she loves to sit on tractors. I was thinking of starting a new thread “dogs at work” I’ve got pictures of my dogs on all kinds of equipment. I’m sure others do too!

5 pointsOver time the internal contact surfaces of a solenoid can develop build up from the arcing at engagement.A new one might help if all the other electrical connections are sound.
-
5 pointsI do just like Racinbob does but I use two washers and if the oil seal is oiled first and aligned correctly on outside of the shaft if should set fine. Make sure PVC pipe end you are going to use is cut straight and if you use a rubber mallet or wooden block and mallet on the end one true tap (not real hard) should set it. You should hear a slight sucking sound if it sets and seals just right.
-
4 pointsWow what a process this is. I built a 5 gallon bucket with five rods of half-inch rebar connected together and water and salt 10 hours to clean this stirrup! Cost me seven bucks! I just touched the wire wheel to it and BARE metal! So easy!

4 pointsKind of looks like your head gasket is leaking. If that is all it is, it is an easy fix. Check out this thread... Gaskets are available on E-Bay. Your engine uses the splash method to lubricate it self. You should be running it at 3/4 speed to get the oil splashing the way it is supposed to. You may not have to run at 3/4 all the time, but you should run it a little when you got her out.

4 pointsI picked up several good ideas here, that's what great about this place!

4 pointsWorked on the 854 w/ Danco loader more today. New cross member made. Took all hydraulic hoses off and went to NAPA to have new ones made. They didn't have all the fittings and said they would be ready Wednesday. Found a backup pump / reservoir on ebay for a great price. Cleaned the reservoir that is currently on loader. Fixed a few other little details. Slowly making headway. Need a better gas cap along with throttle and choke cables

4 pointsDamn that hitch looks nice!!! I might have to get me one of those. And yes they are cub cadet weights.
-
4 pointsSince this is a recoil start engine I wanted to fill in some of the empty space where the battery used to sit on this Ranger so I cut the battery tray down a little and welded up some 1/8" flat to make a tool box out of it. It's not very big but I think the boys will like it. I'll put a small latch on it and maybe add a small handle if I run across something that fits the dimensions.... I've also taken my seat pan to have cushions made and the guy tells me it'll be mid February before I get it back.

3 pointsJust picked this up a few weeks ago, got a 60" wheel horse rear mower to put on it. Anybody know anything about these tractors. Seems like a beast. Not the best picture.

3 pointsThe other day I was looking for my box cutter. You know the red one that says Milwaukee on it looked everywhere couldn't member where I put it in. Guess where it was? Duh
-
3 pointsJim, at least you didn’t get a lap full of ice water like someone did the next night at the Steakhouse. I won’t mention any names.

3 pointsAn engines life blood is oil, it needs to stay cool, in a water cooled engine the water keeps the engine cool which keep the oil cooled. Our air cooled engine need air to keep the engine cool, the more cool air blowing around the engine the cooler the oil, the faster the engine turns the more air is blown over it. I know this is probably basic stuff but it's worth bring up now and then, besides it's been raining for four days and I'm board. An old WH mechanic ( before they were called Technicians) told me years ago the worst thing you can do to an air cooled engine is run it a low RPM, he told me to run my first wheel horse, it had a K181, at at least 3/4 throttle, and at full throttle if I was using any type of attachment. Been doing that ever since. Now where did I put my coffee .

3 pointsWe all stopped exchanging gifts a couple years back, so I didn't get anything from any of the family this year. But did get a nice warm hoodie with the company logo on the chest from the shop. Also treated myself to a Christmas present this year, I normally don't buy things for myself unless its something for the shop or one of the tractors. I've had my eye on this set at Wal-Mart for a while, finally broke down and bought it a couple weeks ago. Just finished up season 3 last night before bed, and I will admit I cried like a baby at the final scene of the final episode, those of you who know the show know exactly what I'm talking about

3 pointsWe finished cleaning up the transmission and reassembled the brake mechanism, adjusted it, installed the drive pulley, new Stens belt from A - Z Tractor, a better used idler pulley, and both hubs. The hubs are much newer HD type with 2 set screws.. Of course with lug bolts... Next we'll put the rims and tires that were on the 1267 when I got it. Same size rim with new/excellent chevron style turf tires. It'll get chains for traction later.

3 pointsNorman, anything in the cranking circuit could give the sane result. It could be a battery cable or any connection being corroded. If both cable connections on the solenoid are clean and tight and you use a piece of metal to short the two large terminals together and it turns over briskly then it is the solenoid. If not then try replacing cables one at a time. I have had a cable that looked new turn out to have an open in the wire.

3 pointsAlso...on hydro tractors, you need to run the throttle almost Wide Open Throttle all the time so the hydro fan cools the hydro like it should.
-
3 pointsLooks like a bad head gasket. These old flatheads need to be run at 3/4 to full throttle, more oil getting to where it need to be and more air to keep it cooler. you engine is running hotter at half throttle than at full throttle not good.
-
3 pointsI imagine the quickest, easiest fix... would simply be adding a fuel primer bulb into the tractors existing fuel line.
-
3 pointsThis is the method I ended up using this morning. Took a couple minutes to sand down the axle shaft a little more which I was going to do anyways and then cleaned up and sanded out the hub that I was using as a puller. Deburred the groove and slid the seal mostly into place. The Hub works as its own Slide Hammer as well. Excellent method. Thank you for sharing that.

3 pointsTrina and I were able to spend two or three hours working on this tractor again today. We removed the brake system and cleaned up the shoe holder and she installed a new shoe from @rmaynard Bob. Trina also wire brushed the outside of both axle shafts and then I finished cleaning one of them up a little with sandpaper and installed a seal on that side. And installed a seal on the brake shaft. Note the wonderful pile of gunk on the floor... There was vast Gunk removal from both sides of the transmission. She also removed the drive pulley and as seen in the picture below she pulled the seals out on that side of the tractor.

3 pointsStarting to see the "Light at the End of the Tunnel" About the only things left are: Fill it with gas Get it running/adjust the carb Adjust the neutral on the hydro Hoping for a nice day so I can open the doors to clear out the exhaust
