A few weeks ago I posted asking for direction on my, (at the time) non-starting C-160 Auto. I got several great pieces of practical advice very quickly and followed through as advised. IT WORKED! Yes... it was the Ammeter ! At the same time, following up on member advice I found several wires (likely from 1974) that were ridiculously worn and subsequently repaired those along with tightening my ground (all items suggested by members). It fired up and next I realized my new ammeter was showing a negative pull when running. So, back I go to old Wheel Horse Forum posts where I found that either my rectifier was bad or poorly grounded. I followed all posted advice and now here I sit.. The 1974 C-160 is running perfectly thanks to Wheel Horse Forum Members! So a hearty, "Thank You" to all and just one more favor please... Could you guys/ladies conjur up some snow so I can go out and do my drive and several of my neighbors too?? Not to be pushy, but sooner is better than later! Thanks all.. you are much appreciated here in Indianapolis.

I thought for reference, I’d toss this in the electrical section. I was having issues loosing power at the coil in the run position, but it had power in the start position. I used some channel locks and pulled apart the swedge flange and this is what I found. some brake clean and a wire brush cleaned the brass parts up well! a little dielectric grease applied and using the ammeter, I was able to prove that I had power to the coil once again! ignition off ignition on, engine off. You can see a draw from the coil. After peening the flange back down, I was able to run Frank for a short while! then it would not start again... and this is where I forgot to take pictures, but I pulled it apart again and found a ton of debris from the plastic tumbler had come off and contaminated the grease. I pulled the plastic and found more springs and decent balls. I’m just going to say that after cleaning all the junk out, grease the springs, put greased detent ball bearings on the springs, and re-assemble with the aluminum casting up nd the components underneath. It keeps it all aligned much better. Then re-assemble the switch portion. Happy Frank!

A quick update on Mark. He had his fourth (and final ? ) chemo treatment in Friday. The hiccups and indigestion after effects are being minimized with the meds. He has been working full time except for the 4-5 days after his treatments and is hoping to return to work tomorrow. I just want to again thank everyone for offering your prayers and well wishes. And I send my prayers to the several members that have sent me PMs relating their similar situations. It is a comfort to know we are not alone on fighting this battle.

Well with some help, I picked up this Porter Cable I had posted about, and it arrived at the barn at the farm via Pony Express It a sight for sore eyes, but thankfully the seller didn't know what it was and had it listed as a "JD Mini Tractor" so I paid about double scrap metal price for it. It's definitely a future project in line behind some others. Being somewhat of a rare tractor I'll be on the lookout for parts, and appreciate anyone sending me a PM if they come across some, This tractor appears identical to the Massey Ferguson Executive, just a different front hood. As you can see its missing the seat, the steering support behind the dash is gone and replaced by a home fabricated bracket, a rear hub is broken, and the hood top is riveted to the hood front. Its stuck in gear, so I've got the transmission filled with diesel. It has a Briggs recoil start engine and it turn over and seems to have some compression. I would appreciate anyone good at interpreting the Briggs nameplate info 142302 502048 303313 letting me know what HP and year this engine is. The front rims appear to be the same as the RJ and Suburban. Rear fenders were an option on the Deluxe model I've read. @jabelman the nameplate with serial number is missing, so you'll just have to add it to you list with my name. The cast aluminum steering wheel is definitely got that retro 50's/60's look You can just make out "Porter Cable" on the front decal https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/topic/77786-spotted-this-old-one-what-is-it/?tab=comments#comment-753711 I spotted this one for sale, says 10 hp John Deere?" Is it possible a Bready or Reo?

Good post! I do them all the time and always have spare cleaned switches to replace one quickly if needed, then clean up the replaced one when there's an opportunity to do it. Same thing with solenoids. Both are fairly simple to take a part and clean, Just replace the rivets with screws to reassemble the solenoid. It's a good way to have spares handy.

I speak for all of us here at Red square. When I say you are quite welcome and any advice you need we can all come up with some sort of solution. Good luck with your next tractor which will be coming soon, you just don't know it yet !!

Great to hear that the forum was able to help you with your problems. And for posting about it. That a very huge reason why this place is so popular with it's members. And the small price for membership is minimal compared what we receive from it.

@indywheelhorsenut It is always nice when the person having issues posts what they did to "Fix" the problems. Kind of like "The rest of the story"! This IS the best Wheel Horse forum on the net!

Good one, don't remember anyone ever asking for That kind of help. My first post was also answered promptly and made me a believer. Now six years later I continue to learn important information and have fun with friends on here every day.

That diagram is great. I have the original from wiring book but this is better for my purposes. Thanks much! Lol.. color helps!

@indywheelhorsenut I also have a 1974 C160 that is my all time favorite of all my wheel horse's. I started with 2 now I have 6. This is a wiring diagram I redone to help me with my C 160. It makes it a little easier.

I took one of those 70 amp flavors apart once just because enquiring minds want to know. It would have took abit to save but I could have if I didn't have 3 new ones from the BS on the shelf.

I completely agree on several levels. First, you won’t find any place with nicer more genuine folks. I truly have made so many friends here and love seeing each one when at the show or a day trip. I wouldn’t begin to make a list of all the friends I’ve made and met in person. @Chris G is one of the friends I have not had the pleasure of meeting. I can tell you he’s a great guy! I bought a motor from him and couldn’t have asked for better packing and help! To my surprise, he put a fuel pump in with the motor for my 312 at no charge! Not only Chris, but everyone I’ve dealt with - thanks for keeping my faith alive that there really are good, kind, decent people out there!

I was on the way to the parts store... then thought “why not look?”

A little brake clean, a little wire brush, a little grease... looks like it’ll work fine! I used channel locks to pull the switch housing apart, and the back side of the, to peen it closed.

A bath? Thing should have been burnt at the stake months ago! I’m working on getting it structurally sound, then I can clean her up and begin the cosmetics. And of course giving it Kohler power!

That’s a neat little tractor! Most people wouldn’t have touched it in the state it was in when you found it, it’s got another couple decades ahead of it now!

Rims have been sanded, primed & painted. Tubes are in and new shoes are on. Time to get some antifreeze. Still have one or 2 more rounds of leaf pickup to do, and have to mount the new drive belt, so I have a little time to procrastinate on the liquid filling. Mounting was, um......., fun, yeah, that's it.....fun. Only tore one tube on the first attempt. (Front view only....) Hopefully the treads are aggressive enough to avoid chains. I was happy to find out the the rears are UTV tires, so operating psi is 7 versus being 3-4 as is the case with most ATV tires, or so I've read. All tires are over pressurized to max right now to test for leaks. Rear is sized at 22-7.0-12. It makes the narrow 22-7.5-12 look fat. Hopefully the down pressure will be helpful against slip.

Small box with three contacts upper front of blower housing is regulator. (Circled) If there is just a plate covering the hole it is a 3 amp system Did headlights work with the engine not running on the donor tractor, if they did regulator system. if they didn't 3 amp unregulated

The three common standard paint colors a fair amount of members use on here are IH Red, Rustoleum Regal Red and Rustoleum Sunrise Red. As far as which is closest to original depends on which piece of buffed out old pain you compare it to. I used Rustoleum Regal Red, (with hardener) on my 312-8 it is a tiny shade darker than Sunrise Red. It's been 3 years since I restored it, for my son to use as his weekly mowing tractor, and the paint has held up excellent . If you buy have a spray gun, consider adding some hardener. rustoleum doesnt make a hardener, so I use the hardener Majic Catalist Hardenenr sold at Tractor Supply. (I don't use the Majic paint, as in my opinion it seems to fade quicker) For the silver rims I used Rustoleum spray can Metallic Matte Silver. Good luck on your project. While we all have opinions on color, the most important thing is to make it your own!

Finally got this tractor in my possession and home. Been trying for 4 years to buy this tractor. Fellow Junkie released it to me for reasonable price. This tractor needs a lot of TLC. Was running on starter fluid several weeks ago. Now it is snowing and everything is froze. Hopefully this weekend we will get back to the 50s and will thaw everything out. Pretty sure transmission is froze up. Really bad thing right now is it is sitting on my trailer and can't get it to move. But...it is at least at my house now and hopefully start getting it back to its glory. Last picture is of it just after being power washed at the local car wash.

I bought some new led light bulbs for my. 314-8 and placed them on my winter worker. First photo is of the box box for the led bulbs I bought on Amazon for a reasonable price for a pair. Second is of the original , conventsil bulbs. Third and fourth photos are of the new led bulbs that use less electrical power. Here is the link to them on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076D32NXV/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Yes you can open the hood with the 2stage blower and cab but it just barely enough to check the oil, then when closing the hood you have to be careful about pinching the vinyl, also note that the vinyl under the windshield will eventually wear (dull) the paint on the hood (someone else on here puts a magnetic sign over the hood so the cab vinyl doesn't rub the paint).

Eric, I think that might be questionable about worth saving. This one was really rough. It had been rode hard and put up wet many times! If it were up to me it wouldn't have been saved, but Emory saw value in it and the smile he had when he was riding on it persuaded me to save it. I would honestly have loved to have found him another horse, but the frame is still solid with no cracks and the transmission shifts perfectly in all gears. He just loved it too much to junk it. Oh well, another really tired horse saved to work another day!

I’d been having some electrical gremlins in the past with the C-101 that this harness (engine) came from, and I thought I had fixed it by cutting the safeties out of the circuit. That worked, or helped, until Frank’s maiden voyage test drive. I was halfway across the back 10 when it died out. I believe it quit giving the coil power when it was running. It fired up fine, but as soon as the starter position was released it would die. I decided to pull the switch apart and this is what I found. I’ll brake clean it, give it a polish on the contacts, fresh grease and try it out...

Thanks guys. It's been great with a nice dinner with the family to come. Not this time Steve. Sunny here but I can see the lake effect clouds off to the west.

Correct, I have a breakerless ignition, and I have parts 61 and 59 on my motor. Looks like I will have to get the other part number for the correct switch.

Took a few minutes and cut the broken tabs to mount the seat pan and welded in some fresh metal. Not pretty or real smooth. But I think they should do the job and will be hidden anyway. That’s it for tonight. Had just a few minutes to work after decorating our tree.
