I wanna Thank you all, especially everybody who's guiding me, to find Parts i need. It was a pleasure, to being in such a great Forum. Good To see, here are also some Guy's they are "normal" like me, This disturbed my hesitation to log in. Additionally i hesitate, because of my English (Denglish) and my spelling, but so far it seems to be not to Bad at all. (i hope)😎 When i see first time my Tractor, i hesitate about possibly upcomeing Troubles. That it be an US Product, makes it even harder here in Germany, to find some good Parts needed. With a actual runtime, of more as 2430 hour's at Pickup and because of the damages of Fire hazard, it was a challenge to bring it back to Live. But i love the Shape of it, so i decided to get it back to life. I know, for some guy's it will be not a real Wheelhorse, but it does't matter. Hey, it lasted about 27years, not Bad at all, ok it's maybe only a "Youngtimer" but it still lasts without bigger Troubles. I do a lot of investigation in the whole Web, to find any Information about my Wheelhorse before, with less Success. Then i found that Forum and found first qualified and good Info's about my little Tractor. I feel myself Welcome, thanks Therefore. Stefan

I told the wife that instead of looking at it as a head ache and a money pit, to look at it as a blessing: If I’m working on and putting money into this, I don’t have money to buy an old Cutlass or Nova to restore 😂

Finally got tired of the missus leaving these lay around in the shop for me to stumble over.... put them where they belong!

Welcome to , @Lengerich8! Most would agree, the Commando 8 or 800 teactors are much stouter than the V8 models, so you lucked out. The best way to get into restoring this is to jump in and get yourself to some shows and swap meets! There’s a nice one in June in Arendtsville, PA that you should go to! Until then, keep reading on here and get pumped about the show!

It looks like, what we here in Iowa, a puff ball. When they are real white we eat them. Wash them up, slice about a half inch thick, batter the and then fry. If that's what it is?? Later in the year they will turn grey and fuzzy, kick them and they explode like dust. Not saying that's what you got there, but sure looks like it, be carefull.

The "V" signifies a vertical shaft engine, which is not what you have. Looks like a Commando 800 or a 1973 8/4speed.

Is that all you can get in there? Sheeesh, my Colorado could tackle that haul!

I couldn’t find a thread that really fit my question, so I started my own. If it’s in the wrong spot please advise and I’ll remove/move it. We recently came into a tractor that all we were told is that it was a “68 Wheel horse”. After doing some digging on the engine serial number, I figured out that it’s a 69, but some places I’ve looked say it’s a Commando 8, some say Commando V8. I’m new to these, so I don’t know how to tell, definitively, which one it is. Any suggestions? Also, what’s the difference between the two? I haven’t really found a straight answer on that either, which I’m sure would end up answering my first question. Thanks I’m advance for any and all help!

We have all learned from shared experiences on here. We learn while helping out others, what a concept.

Your Stefan, yes don't worry about the language thing. If you need to get an thought, idea or question across use your native language if more comfortable. Most of us are versed in Google translate! 'Sides @pullstart speaks fluent gibberish and BS and that ain't exactly on translate but we still understand him! Be advised we do use a bit of American slang here such as NLA, NOS and POS so if you see those and don't understand just ask, a member will be sure to clear things up Enjoy the forum and please do use it to learn and educate others!

Stefan, we all learn a great deal from each other and have a good time doing it.

You are in the right place for all things Wheel Horse!

We don’t need proper English (nor do we always use it properly) to share tractor stories here! They all speak the language, whether we do or not! Putt putt putt putt

I made one using the attach-o-matic mount which I mounted on the front of a GT14 gen is from Harbor Freight. Works great!

I believe that '73 was the only year for no names.

Tried today, to pull a huge Plant (about 300 pounds on wheels, they are sunken ) out of Backyard, suddenly i hear a loud crack.... - Stopped immediately the Pull. Investigate the whole Wheelhorse for the reason of that loud crack... - hmm there must be a reason for 😳 I checked every Bolt and screw, then i found the issue - both Bolts they keep Gear in place, are ripped! ouch.... ok, no Problem - securely drill the old bolts out of the Gearbox, this takes the most time because no reversedrill works. Inhave luck, they ripped so straight, so a drillout was easy possible. Then set new threads (one size up) and spend 2 Helicoils. And 2 new Bolts in and - allready fixed.

Welcome to Red Square , I don't think it is a Commando 800 , the finned regulator was hidden behind the tower. It was not exposed like the photo you sent. My guess would be a 73 no name.

I googled puffball mushroom and those are what showed up. Never knew that's what they looked like before they got to grey/black looking stage and have the dust in them. I see at least 3-4 a year around here going back at least 30 years, mostly in the apple to grapefruit size. Must have seen 15-20 of them this year at my grandmothers while I was mowing. Try hitting one with a mower and having it explode and send dust everywhere. Though for sure I smoked the belt a couple times when it happened.

Mine let me go for the first time this year (yes, I asked permission), and next year I’ll be bringing the whole family. Great times, and you’ll get to meet a bunch of these tractor nuts and their good company!
  21. 3 points
I've found that a lot of them are painted over. I don't have a picture handy, but I'm sure someone else does. Either way, you have what looks to be a really good tractor. These things are the best "rabbit hole" to go down. You'll love it. (As an aside... How big is your garage/shed? Whatever it is, double it! These things are addictive!)

That’s a great way to have another horse in your stable, “honey, but our baby just has to have her own horse!” And it truly is hers, you just get to use it for a decade or so and she grows up using her own. It works for me anyway... caleb on a pair his tractors... Claud on her heirloom Case Judge on his CC plow mule and Zach on the Mighty “BlackBeard”. See...they just all “HAVE TO” have their own tractors. Just think of all those useless plastic toys they get for Christmas and their birthdays that end up in the trash...give them the gift that keeps on giving year after year. Now that I’ve gotten you in trouble with the wife, I slink back into the quiet spot that I came from BTW—a 416-8 is an awesome tractor, how much better with a sentimental family tie?!

I read through this last night, quite the creation you’ve got there! I like the I beam mount, looks like it’s meant to be there.

Went four wheeling in the woods over the weekend and came across three or four of these on the hillside. They're mushrooms the size of a basketball. Anybody else ever run across this. Heard locals here say they lived in area for over 30 years and never run across one.

Hello All, I picked up a nice 417-8 today. Tractor is complete and in very good condition. Was told it needs a head gasket. No battery but in turned the engine over by hand, no noises. Has a very nice 48” deck. Nice paint and tires heck, the chrome still shines. Has the electric lift on it. Mike

Removed the 44 inch mid grader blade from the C121 automatic that dad used all the time. First time off of the tractor in five years. Going to need some paint and a few new bolts I bought this from Fabricator, Ken Stephens, whomade these and sold them at one of the Mentone swap meets!

That doesn't surprise me Jim. That's why I added the disclaimer. This one was all original when I purchased it in the early 80's and it had the 10" rears. I left the 6" fronts and put the 12" from a 76 B-80 on the back. The 73 8 4-speed had 6" and 10" but the 8 8-speed had 8" and 12"...…….... I think

Run into them occasionally in the woods around SE Michigan...They do go "boom" in a cloud of dust when you kick them late in the season... May be tasty but my rule of thumb with mushrooms is - buy them in a store...
  33. 2 points
@Racinbob That is strange about the regulator mounting. I have my Dad's Commando 800 and the regulator is hidden in the tower. I know that the Commando 800 came with 10 inch rear rims and 6 inch front rims. Not sure about the 73 8 hp no name.
  34. 2 points
It’s pretty common to see them here too. Apparently they are a tasty treat, to those who like fungus. I’ve tried to like mushrooms, but I just don’t enjoy ‘em. We used to get monsters like that at our old house every year.
  35. 2 points
Not necessarily so Jim. Here's a 1972 Commando 800 (1-0110). Don't let the rear tires and seat setup throw you. I made those changes when I restored it for our grandson. You can see the regulator mounted like @Lengerich8's. Now that's not saying they all came like that. But....the decals on Len's would say 1973. The decals on this 72 are original.

I bought this Toro from the golf course in Sandy Lake and drove it home along the abandoned railway right of way which is part of the Canada Trail, the Mitsubishi 3 cylinder diesel does not have many hours on it. I've removed the engine and have it in dry storage. Yet to remove are the orbital steering, high speed hydraulic motors that ran the reels, Sundstrand hydro then salvage any usable metal. The first Toro I had purchased was a three wheeler, each wheel had a wheel motor, the Sundstrand was belt driven from a small Perkins which is now in dry storage. Lastly I have a Kubota V2202 direct injected diesel that is also a good runner.

I needed your guidance but you were too far away, I was going load it up over flowing, but my F.I.L was done for the day.

Thank you! I happened to see it on FB market place and thought it would be a good small engine project for my father in law, but I’m taking the lead on it now 😂 I’ll have to do some digging into the show/swap meet... might be close enough to pull it off, and I’ve got plenty of time to sweet talk the wife into it😂

Engine is a service engine replacement can't use it to Id the model of tractor....

Thank you! This is completely foreign territory for me. I’m guessing that being a 3-Speed narrows it down to an 800. These are such cool little tractors, especially being made in Indiana (Hoosier), that’s what really drew me into them is their “Home grown” origin haha. I’d like to eventually make it look factory fresh, but needed to make sure I was looking for the correct parts. Thank you again!

Great ! All thumbs up I don't know you, but as i told you, no doubt about it, you will get it running. Congrats to this success! That's realy that simple built.- perfect looks funny

You are going to love the C-160! A sixteen horse Kohler "THUMPER" engine and a bulletproof eight speed transmission will last for ever with a little maintenance. It looks like it has been cared for and with all those attachments you will be able to do a ton of work.

@BMW1 Those are toxic weights that must be disposed of properly. I can send you my address for a free and proper disposal at no cost to you. @pfrederi got it right! Well fitting weights are weights. I’m still open to donations however. Lol

@Machineguy, @PeacemakerJack, @pullstart, @Achto, here's the first load this old fella hauled since bringing it home, 2760 pounds of junk metal and plastic the F.I.L had laying around, went across the scales loaded at 10680 total, so around 7900 "empty".

Thanks everyone for all your help. I gotten this bug now that I realize what type of machine I have and just can't seem to stop looking at all the different attachments I can get. My wife keeps asking do you need that and my reply is YES I'm having fun!!!!!!
