I was lurking around craigslist a while back and found a NEAT big-tired tricycle for my boys for next to nothin. We went and picked it up and it needed all new tires and was looking a little down. (Though the boy was happy!) The front tire was leaking down to nothing about once every ten minutes. So I decided that it needed a bit of work done to it. This is my first experience with powder coating (I had a set of tractor wheels done at the same time) but it turned out real nice. WH Red (I guessed RAL3002, but not sure how it compares to 3003, but it looks like a dead ringer to the mint 48" deck I have) And RAL1013 for the off white. I spent a small (relative) fortune on it between the tires, bearings, and coating, but it should last a good long time for them. I also built a trailer frame and had it and the wheels coated to match so I can make him a dump trailer to tow around. I have to admit, I am a bit jealous of that one!

I realized I never posted this project. It's a bunch off odd parts i had picked up to save from junk and so on. So I figured I would build me another tractor. Its a 702 tower, steering components, fuel tank, frame, fenders and tool box. The motor is a 8hp Kohler off a 8hp 4 speed. Belt guard and front axle came off a lawn Ranger. The rear end I got in a package deal. The guy said it came off a 1971 workhorse 800. The hood I picked up was in two pieces when I got it. Which works cause I got to extend it 3 1/4 inches. So I won't feel guilty of hacking up a good hood. I got different tires for the front and the rear tires are 25x11-12 atv tires. The weights were just random 55lbs weights I had. So they got painted and dressed with a Wheel Horse decal. I had to move the motor ahead 1 1/2 inches. Then added a belt tensioner. But all is coming together well. It's gonna be my new plow tractor. The engine just got basic attention. She ran good so I left her be. I still got to finish placing some electrical and make a exhaust bracket for support. Basically a few odds and ends left to do. I'll post more pics when I get her all buttoned up. But let me know what ya think.

Having been an automotive enthusiast most of my life I have seen the popularity (and value) of many once-precious vehicles diminish while others have gained traction. When I started building Street Rods it had to be a pre-1948 steel bodied Ford coupe or roadster; you were a second class citizen otherwise. Now NSRA and others have opened it up to anything you want to pay an admission fee for. I'm an old school type, OK; I'm just old! The hobby is stronger than ever, but the standards had to be compromised to achieve this. I am encouraged by the number of young members we have and the growth that has taken place in the Garden Tractor hobby in general and in particular. Will this wave last for ever; not too likely. Will it continue for the next twenty years, you bet your sweet bippy it will. (if you don't know what a bippy is you are too young, look it up).

Keep an eye out for a tractor salvage yard. You might be able to find a used tire that you can get for not much money. (Unless you happen to find a WH wheel I would just get the tire as WH has a pretty shallow backspace). I think you can also throw on a set of 23 x 8.5 x 12 which are a little more common and it will only change your ride height half an inch or so. You may be able to get a good used tire for less than a tube. Or maybe post a wanted ad here and someone can ship you something maybe? Who knows! These people are pretty helpful!

I finally replaced the worn and ripped seat on the 416. I used my 10% discount from TSC to buy this: http://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/high-back-mower-seat-black?cm_vc=-10005 I had to drill new holes in the seat bracket, but it's done and it's mounted.

All one has to do is go to the WHCC Big Show and look around. The attendance is still high and the little kids that we saw a decade ago are now collectors and restorers. The little guys that are riding their parent's horse around today will be the teen with greasy hands and a rat rod in a couple of years. And it goes on and on and on...

Nice ....Couple of horse stickers on it and the boys won't know what to do! I got real bad news for you tho Brandon.... they will outgrow it real fast so enjoy while you can. In a few short years they will be eyeballin your tractors if they already ain't! ...Then it's dad can I borrow your truck keys!!

Hi folks, The big Happy Birthday came! So did the Wheel Horse. Thanks everyone for your advice while I was looking for a tractor. It was appreciated. Now here you go - share the joy of a sons 11 year old birthday. His first tractor! C-81 Wheel Horse. Darn proud of it! I'm going to need your guys advice going forward as it's been a long time since I did any rebuild. BTW - I havn't run it - It had old fuel in the tank and hasn't run in some years - but all the systems are looking great. He's getting to work.

10-5-1947 First presidential speech on TV On this day in 1947, President Harry Truman (1884-1972) makes the first-ever televised presidential address from the White House, asking Americans to cut back on their use of grain in order to help starving Europeans. At the time of Truman’s food-conservation speech, Europe was still recovering from World War II and suffering from famine. Truman, the 33rd commander in chief, worried that if the U.S. didn’t provide food aid, his administration’s Marshall Plan for European economic recovery would fall apart. He asked farmers and distillers to reduce grain use and requested that the public voluntarily forgo meat on Tuesdays, eggs and poultry on Thursdays and save a slice of bread each day. The food program was short-lived, as ultimately the Marshall Plan succeeded in helping to spur economic revitalization and growth in Europe. In 1947,television was still in its infancy and the number of TV sets in U.S. homes only numbered in the thousands (by the early 1950s, millions of Americans owned TVs); most people listened to the radio for news and entertainment. However, although the majority of Americans missed Truman’s TV debut, his speech signaled the start of a powerful and complex relationship between the White House and a medium that would have an enormous impact on the American presidency, from how candidates campaigned for the office to how presidents communicated with their constituents.

Hi All, (what's the proper term for Wheel Horse aficionados? Wheelies? Horsers? Whiskey Hotels?), Just became proud owner of a 1970 Charger 12 Auto with tiller and hydraulic loader. We've decided to call it Samwise because it's small but mighty and (we hope) dependable. I'm still figuring things out and have one issue: the parking brake lever keeps popping up on its own. That doesn't stop the tractor, so I assume the pawl has been ground down / busted. And, the transmission continues to get power with the lever up, which makes me think someone has installed a drive belt that is too short. Does that seem likely? What is the proper size belt? Thanks! I'm sure I'll have many more questions. I've already learned a ton perusing the archives.

Well, unless you are going to be driving down the highway at 100 I don't see the problem. Worst case is the tire rips wide open and the tube pops out a bit. At that point you know the answer. These tires are only inflated to 12 PSI so a dangerous blowout should not be an issue.

This started out as a low profile 4x8 trailer that i made to hall tractors behind my S10 7 years ago. It worked great until the axle broke one year ago. Over the summer I needed dump trailer for moving dirt around in the yard and the gears were turning in my head. So I made a smaller version of the one I borrowed last fall to haul 210 tons of fill, sand, top soil, and gravel to the house. I am not hauling that kind of loads any more, just moving it around the yard to fill in holes and leveling the yard now. I only have a little over $100 into this modifying it to become the ultimate yard cart. I already had the pump, cylinder, spindals, and tires. Just needed a stick of 2" tubing and some sheet metal. I used it all summer long working the bugs out and making small modifications tell I was happy with it. I had a buddy that owed me and he just so happens to do sand blasting and painting. I just got it back and I have to say i am very pleased with the outcome!

The solution! As it turns out, after doing a lot of reading up on this issue, it sounded most to me like the timing issue that Woodchuck and 520HC mentioned. So, I went in with the timing light and found it was actually running at 22-23BTDC when measured dynamically with a timing light. I brought it in to 18 and gave it a try there and it now runs quiet and strong. It was a spark knock after all! Man, was that loud.. I'm really surprised. Mike

That would have worked when she was younger, she is 12 and very prissy! They make too much noise and "smell Bad". Oh well, we will just continue going to Disney World to see all the "Princesses". As long as she is having a good time I am happy to spend time with her; though I do wish she would attend the Florida Flywheeler Show with me, then again, that will be MY little escape from reality; who needs Rapunzel, Ariel and the others anyway! Pop Pop has and Rumley and Hart-Parr and Gibson to see!

Welcome! I make some points below, but regardless, i think that price is a good deal for that tractor, the body work looks to be in great shape just dirty. This could be many things... Are you referring to surging or it runs for a few minutes then quits? A few more details here would be great. I've never heard of this? The voltage regulator is on the shroud, the coil is up top. There are some ignition trigger parts under the flywheel, but I don't think its terribly common for them to go out, I could be wrong though, never had to go in there. I think the most common big issues we Wh folk see are dirt in the carb causing surging and sometimes stalling, followed by bad valve seat on rear cylinder that will cause hard starting and very poor running in general. That would be a 48" side discharge deck, not that 2" matters, but just so you are aware. Lots of people around here prefer the 8-speeds too. They are bulletproof and dead-simple. And check out low-range first gear... It always puts a smile on peoples faces when they realize how much torque is available in that gear... The 520H is the only tractor with a wider stance front end, the other H's dont have the larger front end and most dont have the larger rear tires of the 520H Overall I think that tractor is in real good shape (especially if you can solve the running issue) and I think you will like it as is.

I am not sure what you have there in your Engine. I suppose its possible that Kohler could have put standard K series Pistons in at first. The crank should have some differences in their counter balance. That's why from what I understand is the reason the Mag 14's and 16's have to use the balance gears. In the service manual it says nothing about the Mahle piston. It just describes the different styles of pistons and what Rods go with what type of piston. Since the manual does not really refer to the Mahle piston, I wonder if that piston was used after manual was printed. If you get on Brian Millers web page and look under balancing it describes the different cranks used and shows pictures. There is a lot of info on his site and it took me reading it a couple of times over. The timing of the balance gears is most critical. I do not have a tool and have to use the method described outline in the service manual. (All the more reason to hate balance gears) All the vibration was my fault because I used my knowledge and experience from rebuilding K's. Found out the hard way that though very similar they do have differences. I also must note that my first rebuild was a Mag 16. It was for a friend. If I remember right the only piston at that time that was offered in the size needed was the Mahle. per my normal "leaving the balance gears out" we re-assembled it and the engine ran fine. I did contact him back when I found out they need to be back in there. According to what I have read, there have been reports of Mag 14's and 16's breaking cranks with gears left out. I am not exspert on this my any means. I am just sharing what had happened to me so the next guy that might run into this won't go down the path I did through ignorance of being complacent in his or her knowledge of rebuilding motors. Be glad to share any information I have that might help.

Sure, get another 6 months out of that tire if that's what you need to do. I've been trying to get a little extra mileage out the tires on a couple of my Wheel Horses too. A full set of tires is not cheap !

I've never tried the polling feature of the Red Square forum. So here goes. Question: How long will Wheel Horses tractors be around? (Vote on the multiple-choice poll choices.)

That is happening in other hobbies and activities too. It's sad IMO. All about numbers and $.

If you can not play dump , hit, kick, or punch you brother where is the fun? My brothers and I usually got into it at least once a day. Usually started with " that's mine, give it back" . No body died or went to the E R and we had fun ( I think). Dump you brother is better than" my thumbs are sore from playing this video game". I wish I could find a tricycle like that for my grand kids.

Thanks for all the replies folks. I found a local "Lawnmower and chainsaw repair" shop that has a pile of tires out back. Figured I'd haul my chains in to get sharpened while I'm looking for an inexpensive replacement tire. If I can't find a used tire that works I'll just order a tube and go from there. Richard. Oh and I am not buying another tractor so that I can use it for parts. I've done that with IH Scout diesels in the past and it really really didn't end well.

Find another just for the tires.

You might find a couple of used ATV tires that will fit. Some ATV owners like to up grade to a rougher tread when there tire are still in good shape.

Ah I hadn't considered a salvage yard. Heck I don't need much of a tire just something to get us through the next few months. Thank you! Richard

Here are a few more pics. This collection of MF belongs to my friend Jason, not bad for a collection he started this year. This one is his most recent addition and my favorite of his collection. The two year restoration of this Frick steam engine was done by Willy and his daughter. I was able to spend a little time running this engine on Sunday. Willy used the Frick to put on a nice spark show for the spectators on Saturday night. This scale model Oil Pull showed up on Sun. This JD and loader have been in the same family since new. The weather was a lot nicer on Sun. and I think there were more spectators as a result. Wish I would have gotten a pic of Jim @WHX8 skiing behind a lawn tractor on the wet grass. I will make sure to get that on film if it ever happens again.

Hello chaps. I am very pleased to have found a dozer blade for my horse, however I use it to scrape muck off my lane; its very narow and the council don't care. No problems except the camber of the tarmac mean the LH side is off the ground. I assume the should be something flexible [rubber?] under the blade, there is a strip held on by coach bolts. Any suggestions please for some kind of makeshift substitute? Ta

Others can correct me if I am wrong but you need the forward swept axle for a larger deck and only 520's had those. An axle swap is not out of the question tho. Lets just say there are no syncros to wear out

Man you do nice work JA ...that looks to be an early one with the solid seat pan & all.... I'll take it if she doesn't like it or out grows it.... pink & all! Any chance it has a Clinton?
  40. 2 points
Gotcha. Straight cut, no sync, must stop first. Not really liking that part. Are these more reliable than that of one with Syncros? He had it listed for $850 and I ask him if he wanted to trade a Toshiba 55" 1080p 240hz, passive 3D LED LCD Tv complete in Box and he said no (said he's older and most likely wouldn't know how to use it. smh) So, I asked what would be his lowest price. He $600 for negotiating and $400 for "It runs great, I'll take it"....? interesting huh... I asked if he had any extra's and he said no being that he originally purchased the tractor to harvest the engine for his Skid Steer. But he sold that and wants to move this to make room before winter. He already looked into the engine issue though. So I'm wondering about that. He said he would start it. I asked for a video of it before I fully commit. So we'll see how much patience he has... Thanks, I've heard others suggest that, but with the issues that are common like this and then fixed by replacing the voltage regulator or ignition module (whatever it is) and with as many threads I've read just last night that were solved by replacing this part, I'm going to plan on that. BUT, I will do the simple stuff first like this as I always do with any deduction/ process of elimination... Thank you though for the suggestion either way.

Recheck the timing , it might spark knock.
  42. 2 points
I would have to look at the 522xi i sold my dad but you may be better off moving the engine back sum and making the drive shaft shorter than trying to cut the crank shaft down. But i think none of this will be necessary. I believe the electric clutch will be fine. Not a expert just going off my memories from the last time i pulled the engine out of a XI.

We had this nice little show going on this past weekend. This was the first show ever by this club so attendance was small and the weather wasn't the best. Had a nice showing of horses there between Dan @achto & Josh @PeacemakerJack & myself. Dan's rat rod had the most lookers... We all agreed it is the whitewalls that does the trick! Some nice hit & miss engines...there's just something about stting at one of these shows and hearing these engines running in the backround!

Glad you got those balance gears out. There nothing but trouble in a K series. It still could be rod knock. A out of tolerance crank journal can cause rod knock even though you can't fill it. Sometimes piston slap can cause internal noise. Do you have a mechanic stethoscope or hollow metal tube to put against the motor to try and determine what location noise might be coming from. Not always but a cracked flywheel can make noise when different stresses are put on the motor. The noise can sound like it's something internal. If it sounds like a rod knock good chance it is. If it is, it won't getter better. I would tear it back down and get some measurements on that crank journal and pull that rod and visually inspect it. Aftermarket rods are cheap enough. Try that. Believe me if it's s rod it will demand attention one way or another.

  49. 2 points
Correct! They are not axles, yet spindals mounted to 1/2" plate. It does have tubes running from one side to the other, but higher up for clearance. The front one is different then the rear as the lift cylinder was in the way. I used what I had and really have very little $ it building this. It could be pulled down the road, but I built it for a yard cart.

My daughter is really a good kid, but a sort of "fashion plate". Cute as a button like cschannuth's girl, but you would never see her in sweats goofing around like her. She is all about clothes, styling, etc. Worked in retail clothing stores for several years now, and is now over apparel at the new Kroger Market Place here in town. Quite proud of her. Unfortunately, anything mechanical just leaves her cold. I must of done something wrong when she was little, and I let her play in my machine shop. Took her to work with me almost everyday till she started school. Had a little play area in the office, but she could come out on the floor whenever we weren't doing anything dangerous, and she could be adequately supervised. Wife was the secretary, and my feeling was that it would be a good idea for her to be around her parents all the time instead of at a daycare. I suppose all the time she spent with us resulted in a close relationship, as she comes by almost every evening, and will even go to the occasional tractor show with me (mostly for the food and craft crap). But start talking about lathes, mills, Wheel Horses, Farmalls, etc., and her eyes glaze over. Talk long enough, and she begins snoring.
