sawhorse 0 #1 Posted June 10, 2009 I am wondering if anyone here has powered one of those roller pumps for sprayers from the wheel horse pto. not sure if the roller pumps can be belt driven. I want to make a wheel horse driven sprayer to handle the tall trees in my small orchard area.
Don1977 604 #2 Posted June 13, 2009 Yes you can use a belt to power a roller pump. I built one several years ago, but I used a small Briggs engine with a belt drive. It's mounted on a trailer with a 55 gal. plastic drum. You will need a large pulley for the pump to keep the RPM on the pump down. I used old engine that only ran about 2000 RPM's and used 3" pulley on the engine and a 6" pulley on the pump.
sawhorse 0 #3 Posted June 13, 2009 Thanks for the information Don1977. If I ran the roller pump off the wheel horse I would probably have the tank on a trailer because of the weight. How much weight will hold on the hood of a 310-8? Is it possible for the 55 gallon drum to be emptied by the sprayer? Did you have to cut holes? I have access to used drums that sounds like a great idea for a tank. Jon
Don1977 604 #4 Posted June 13, 2009 I sawed a couple of 1" holes one through the plug and one in the drum used BJ Weld to seal the fittings to the drum. I just finished painting the trailer, I'll try to get some pictures.
Rideawaysenior 25 #5 Posted June 14, 2009 It's not a bad idea, but to be honest, you can get a pretty powerful 12v pump that will do just as good as a PTO pump. I've got a Mckisic sprayer with a 3hp Briggs and roller pump. Does nice. I made a similar rig using a 12v pump I got from tractor supply and I don't see any difference between the two. sawhorse 0 #6 Posted June 14, 2009 I am considering all spraying options. The 12v sprayer at tractor supply looked like a good deal because it came with the Delavan pump. Does anyone know if my 1989 310-8 will provide enough electrical power to run the 12v 2 gpm 60 psi sprayer. I think I read somewhere here that my tractor has a paltry 3 amp charging system. I've got the Kohler Magnum M10. :thumbs2:
