ST-326 thrower belt troubles

Recommended Posts

Parke1

Hey gang,

I just acquired an 857 with a ST326 snow thrower on it. I mounted the thrower today, and got the belt on, but if the tractor is running, the auger is spinning. I pulled back on the clutch lever and locked it in the rearward "off" position, but that auger is still spinning darned fast. I shut off the tractor, and pulled back on the belt for the blower, and it's tight enough that it'll turn the crank on the motor!

I need a new belt for it anyway, but how loose should it be? Anyone have a NAPA number for a belt, or even just the correct length will work for me.

Thanks a ton!

TT

The OEM belt number is 1589 and is 57" long X 1/2" wide.

The belt should only loosen enough to slightly lift out of the groove on the engine pulley (enough to quit driving the thrower) when the tension is released. I'm thinking there should be a wire guide in that area (bolted to the engine block) to help lift the belt but I'll have to look it up when I get a chance. :omg:
