iicap 1 #9 Posted April 8, 2009 10W-40 is motor oil and not designed to do the job of a gear lubricant in an application like this. There are situations where a SAE 50 motor oil is used in heavy duty truck transmissions as per the trans manufacturer saying it can be used instead of their preferred lubricant. I say this just to let you know that sometimes there are alternatives. ALWAYS use the recommended lube in gear cases and you won't go wrong. There are times when newer lubes come out years later that may serve better. Synthetic lubes such as 75W-90, 80W-90, and 85W-140, and some that are not synthetic can/could be used instead of Hypoid-90. Fair warning, materials of a lot of older seals have been found to fail with the use of synthetics. Also I believe a member of RS is in the lubricant business and I think he could correct anything I may have mis-stated and he also could speak authoratively about this subject Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
