ignition voltage fluctuates

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm kinda giving up on my own work and asking for help. :omg:

K241 and k301

I have two nearly identical tractors, on one the battery voltage when off is 12.5 and when running wot the voltage is about 14.5 (good).

On the other the battery voltage when off is 12.5 and when running wot the voltage jumps from 0 to 14 to 6 to 12 to ?? etc, etc.

I swapped the voltage regulators with no change.

I unhooked the starter/generator completely!! the belt off and the wires completely off and pull started it. THe battery voltage still jumps around.

(can't be the starter generator at this point , correct ?)

Swapped the coils with no change.

I have checked the grounds, the switches etc are identical between the two.

The only thing I have not changed are the point/condensor.

Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: I have not swapped the battteries either, however the tractor that is having problems has a brand new TSC battery and the one the works has an old battery.

thanks

Larry

Are you measuring the voltage directly from the battery terminals with your voltmeter, maybe the battery is wonky and the engine vibrations are causing it due to an internal fault. try swapping the batteries between tractors to see if its the same on the other tractor. have they got ammeters to see if they are charging.

Might want to pull the flywheel, I have seen this before and it could be a magnet has come loose. If so its a easy enough fix. I clean both magnet and flywheel and use JB weld to glue it /them back on, also have used superglue both have worked well. if its multipules its north /south n/s/n/s.

Sorry, I am guilty of the same thing that I complain about, not enough info.

Fordson, Yep I'm gonna swap the batteries and see.

Steve. They are old 1056 and 1057, they have no magnets.

Then I'm gonna swap the condensers, I'm out of ideas.

thanks for the suggestions!!!!

Oh, yeah, its a 1056/k241 that is good and a 1057/k301 that is wonky.

changed condensers, NO good. Next is the batteries. They are pain to change as I have them strapped in because I don't have good battery boxes. Oh, well, BRB
