Engine question

Recommended Posts

Hi- First post here.

I have been going through a lot of post on replacement engines and the one thing that has me a little confused is what some are referring to lateral pressure on the crankshaft and needing an engine with bearings instead of bushings. I am assuming this is due to the pressure of the PTO when you engage it pushing against the engine from the side and not the pull from the drive belt. If this is the case then it you only use the tractor to pull trailers and other implements is this still important to look for when replacing an engine.

My tractor 1988 310-8

Thanks

Dale

You are correct in your analysis.  No manual PTO no need for ball bearing and or thrust bearings.

You can use electric PTO on engines without  ball bearing and/or thrust bearing

Lots of people have been replacing engines with the Harbor Freight "Predator" engines with great results. I doubt that they will last 30 years like the cast iron Kohler, but for the money they will get you back on the lawn in short order.

There are lots of posts on here about re-powering, If questions come up please post them here.
