K181 noise?

Recommended Posts

clueless

Cleaned up the k181 on a B-80 I acquired a couple of years ago. New fuel pump, carb, fuel lines, points and plug. Pulled the head, piston and cylinder looked decent, cleand the head and valves, put a new Kohler head gasket on and torque the bolts. It runs great, no smoke but I do smell oil coming from the exhaust. When running the noise is more of a rattle than a knock, but could be a knock I'm not sure. After checking my HF torque wrench against my 50+ year old craftsman beam torque wrench, it is definitely not accurate, I may have over torqued the head. Could the noise be the valves?

Sure, the noise could be the valves.  These are solids on this engine.  Take off that breather plate just behind the carb and you can check the clearances.  If it is the exhaust valve, you might just have to have it re-ground for the seat and re-check the clearance.  :)

Check your point setting, they can cause a knock/rattle

Closed more, or opened more, would either way cause a knock?

The points control your timing.  Factory is .020 but it seems some of the older "K" series run better when the points are set at .018  :)
