Tractor Identification

Recommended Posts

Preacher

I’m seriously confused. I recently purchased this tractor. I was told that it was a 1968. When looking at different models online, I couldn’t find a 1968 with a combination generator/starter on one. The Model and Serial Number tag is almost destroyed by painting over it. I can make out a few numbers.

1 6281

400351

Can someone help me identify exactly what this tractor is?

Thanks and God Bless

Your tractor is a 1968 Raider 12.  The engine without the model tag will remain a mystery.  Possibly changed at some point or a carry-over engine from 1967.

Your model number is 1-6231 - an early 1968 model using a starter generator.

Mid-year production switched to a Bendix starter and alternator charging system but the tractor model number stayed the same.

That looks like a very original model.

Click on the chart below

Thanks for the clarification Garry. It was my belief that late 67 went to the Bendix with possibly a few carry over S/G's in early 68. @Preacher's Raider is the first I've seen with a S/G which makes it somewhat rare if original. Any tags on the engine Preacher?

No matter what nice survivor! :handgestures-thumbupright:

This is the tag on the engine. But it’s only a 6 speed, unless you’re counting 2 reverse speeds.

Next question for everyone. Does anyone know where I could find the cover for the engine and starter/generator?

Funny you should ask that Preacher. A few years ago I too was in search of a belt cover for a K241 figuring I would never find something for a old tractor like this. Then I stumbled across RS and learned that there is a gathering in PA that is the mecca of :wh: & parts. So in 2016 armed with a list of parts  I decided to visit this little show and found piles upon boxes of these belt guards and many more parts to restore and keep these little red tractors running. Also found a bunch of fellas that forgot more than what I'll ever know about them. The results of that trip illustrated here.

So to answer your question try http://a-ztractor.com/ or posting to the wanted section here. @daveoman1966 is clearing out his parts so give him a shot. You can also try :techie-ebay:but you never know who you are dealing with there but sometimes find our members who are generally all strait shooters selling there.

Good luck and be persistent and you will find one.

Your :text-welcomewave:

BTW in your pic it looks like someone has got the wrong belt on the S/G. Yours appears to ride a little high on the pulleys  meaning it might be a 1/2 width (4L) belt. Should be a 3/8" belt or 3L size. I should but don't know/remember the length. :hide:

So what you are saying Richard is when I go to TSC to get one I should get a 34, 35 & 36 incher then I'm guaranteed to have the right one?!?!

Should use a belt that is not fabric covered. Raw rubber sides give a better grip.

Starter/generator belt Kohler 10, 12hp
Wheel Horse 1593 (3L x 34.4")
 - nla
7340 Gates .410" x 34.58" 36 degree
25-7340 Napa .410" x 34.58" 36 degree

These last two are automotive belts determined by Kohler original numbers

Like many others, I have the sleeves from various belts stapled too the wall in the shop so I can be sure to get the right belt. Also, like many of our older members I can generally remember stuff like that, but not always. Garry seems to have confirmed the 35".

Thanks everyone for all the information. I knew the belt was wrong. I just haven’t had time to start on it yet.

I would like to get all of your professional opinions about what a tractor like this is worth just as it sits right now. I have the blade for the front also that goes with it, and it is in great condition. Thanks

Thank you Garry ...saved to my files

As far worth Preacher depends a lot on your area. In mine it would fetch 5 - $600. maybe 700 with the blade.

I'd have to put on an addition for the wall space Dick!

Thanks. That’s what I was thinking. I would start out at $750. Folks here in NE Tennessee have always been taught to not buy anything if it wasn’t on sale, so I’d have to come down to $700 for em.

Have a great day and God Bless.

BTW that NAPA # is a 25-7350 belt, 7340 is the 34" flavor and a little tight.

For some model years you have to go to the Kohler parts lists to find the starter/generator belt and the one I used was 235312 for the 10hp-12hp used 1963-1968.

Go to Gates and they replace Kohler 235312 with Gates 7340 or the Napa 25-7340 which are both primarily automotive belts.

I don't have such a model to check it out.

Garry

Went through the numbers again and some have been discontinued with no replacements so started over.

Starter/generator belt

Kohler 10, 12hp 235262
Wheel Horse 1593 (3L x 34.4") - nla (Gates replacement 6735 3/8" x 35" 38 degree)
7345 Gates .410" x 35.09" 36 degree
25-7345 Napa .410" x 35.09" 36 degree
