Surprise with my 244H

Mowing with my 244H over the weekend ---- the electric clutch stopped working.  It functioned intermittently,

after initial stoppage.

I checked around for a bit ---- and found the problem.  Put my volt meter on the battery

while it was running - and only measured 10 volts.  Shut the tractor off ---- same result.

That clutch draws a lot of juice!

Charging circuit was blown  (fuse melted into the fuse box).

Not sure how long this issue has been around.  Put a new battery into the tractor last October.

For all I know, the system wasn't working, then.

I replaced the charging fuse after digging out all the melted plastic, and voltage now reads a steady 14.

Trickle charged for an afternoon ---- and off to the races.

What engine is in a 244H? I've never heard of that model. Love those easy fixes.

244H uses a vertical shaft Onan single cylinder 14 Horse.

It's a Toro/Wheel Horse ----- but the frame and rear axle are  unquestionably WH.

I like it ---- but not quite heavy enough for my hilly yard.

Built in the early 90's, they are a tough lawn tractor and the 14hp Onan is really dependable. Hydro transmission is too.

They ARE a lawn tractor so, hilly lawns will challenge them.

I had one gifted to me and was surprised at how well it functioned.

Thanks, just when I think I have the model numbers figured out I learn something new.

My guess is the fuse holder connections were corroded and that caused them to heat up at the connections. The clutch shouldn't draw more than about ten amps.

If you need to replace the fuse block Del Electric sells that exact fuse block and pins for not much money.  That fuse block is used on many WH tractors.

I just picked up a little 244h This week that wasn't suppose to run. I had it running before I took it off the trailer. Mowed about half the front yard and smoked the coil so Im waiting on a replacement. I normally stay away from the vertical shafts but Im kind of impressed by it so far.
