Did some more work today on the Wheel Horse  42 inch Sickle Bar Mower.

I am repainting but also replacing all the old sickle bar mower hex and carriage bolts.

Removed the blade, cleaned and sharpened all the individual blades.   Not going to  replace any blades at this time as most are pretty good except at the points.

Removed all the bolts and guards to clean and remove dirt and rust.  I used a wire brush, wire wheel and box cutter knife to remove old dirt and rust lodged in the underneath of each guard.   This  will help preserve the sickle long term, make it work better, and allow paint to adhere on both sides of the guard.

The key to these sickles is having a very smooth track for the wobble box to do its work and shift the cutting knife blades back and forth with very little interference.  50 years of rust, dirt and grease buildup need to be removed to help that  back and forth movement occur.

Fourth picture is after removing most of the gunk.

Fifth picture is of the buildup underneath the guard.

NOTE:  If I had an E tank set up  I would place these in it for a much better cleaning.

You could just set up your own "E-TANK" , Lane....It's not that difficult. :)

More assembly completed  today on the 42 Sickle Bar Mower !  I like the black carriage bolts on the sickle - look just like plow bolts!
